  • The city fell to local tribes around 285 and was never retaken by Rome because of its remoteness and indefensibility on the south-western border of the Roman Empire. It continued to be inhabited for at least another 700 years, first as a Latinised Christian community, then as an early Islamic settlement. In the late 8th century it became the seat of Idris ibn Abdallah, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and the state of Morocco.

@@medalaeeladlani5683 I say it was built by berbers. Centuries before any single romain land the region. Yes later it was occupied by romains. In fact it is a common patrimony berber-romain. Check out Unesco

I think it's better known by the film industry than by tourists. It was a location for many films. Unfortunately...

unfortunately pre islamic conquest relics and monuments are not mentioned much in either the Moroccan media or education so not much of internal tourism in these places , not to mention most tourists rather go to big cities like Marrakesh , Fez and Meknes . also when going on either the highway or even national road I don't remember any road signs to indicate this monument . not surprising though , I know other places one of them is an old village , fortress-like with walls ( though built with hardened dry mud instead of stone ) , tours and all that is at least 2 centuries old , it was never registered as a monument by the Moroccan government , though it was empty and abandoned by it's villagers some 50 years ago ( to have bigger houses connected to their vegetable fields and cattle space )
