The NHL was and never will be better than when Sakic's Avs and Yzerman's Wings were duking it out. Not just because of the emotion involved, but because both teams were incredibly talented and led by two amazing captains.
I agree! Those were some battles for the Western Conference crown. Loved those hockey years before that lockout.
👍
Only if you were an Avs or Wings fan, then there was nothing on par with that rivalry. But if you were a Rangers fan, did you really care?
@tippiGordon Agreed, but don't forget that in that era the hockey and competition was also so much better because at their heels you had Dallas with Belfour and Modano, and the Devils with Brodeur and Niedermayer and co. Not to forget either the Sabres with Satan and Hasek. What a time for hockey that was.
When Joe Sakic handed Ray Bourque the Stanley Cup; the C on his jersey stood for classy. One of the most memorable moments in championship sports.
Mark's three years in Vancouver couldn't have been Messier.
Lol 😂
🤣👏🏽
Well played 😂😂😂
Taking C from Linden was insane
Canucks yearly 11 game ice pack holder here since 1997. C'mon now Messier was the greatest canuck to ever don the jersey! LMAO!
Seeing this trailer reminded me of a Sakic story that Shanahan tells:
“Sean Avery stood up as Joe Sakic was skating by our bench,” Shanahan wrote. “Sean was a young, enthusiastic hockey player who was well-liked by us old guys, and as you might know, was known for trash-talking. But when he stood up and yelled, ‘Hey Sakic!’ Brett Hull grabbed him by the back of his sweater and yanked him down on the bench. Then he said, and I’ll never forget this, ‘You are not allowed to speak to Mr. Sakic.’ And then Sean looked down the bench at the rest of the boys and we all just sort of nodded."
Is that right? Wow. If you can lead me to which interview that was, I would like to hear it. Totally believe it though. Sakic accrued an amount of respect on the level of Peter Stastney, Jean Beliveau, or perhaps even Patrice Bergeron nowadays, if anybody now comes close. Thanks for the comment!
@@OneEyedKeysit was in Sean averys book
@@SneekPeekTech Thanks! All the best!
That’s awesome. I’m an Avs fans and always thought Brett Hull was classy as hell, and you confirm my suspicions.
Im a Wings fan, and for me it doesn't get any classier than Yzerman and Sakic. I loved watching those two stay out of the violence of the rivalry and simply lead their teams to victory.
Glad to see them both at the helm of their respective franchises now.
Much respect for Burnaby Joe.
I gotta believe during the rivalry both teams agreed that those 2 players were off limits from all the shenanigans
@@nathanielkloos2774
They were absolutely off limits.
On the flip side you have Lemieux and McCarty.
@@dccoulthard
Yup.
I'll hate Lemieux until I die, and I'm sure Avs fans will hate McCarty the same.
Joe is a classy guy. One year, he donated all the away jerseys for all the minor hockey teams in Burnaby.
What a legend Sakic. Let’s go Avs.
As a Michigan native and lifelong Red Wings diehard I despised the avalanche during that era but not Sakic. Dude was as talented and classy as they come. I’ll definitely watch this.
Same. I was in high school in the late 90's. Hockey was so much fun. I'll def watch this. Let's win on Tuesday!
Funny enough I was discussing just this with a buddy and we came to the conclusion that it was down to basically Sakic and Foote as far as Avs we actually liked from that 96 to 02 era.
30 year wings fan too but gotta say makar is my fav player rn wish we had him hahah
As an Avs fan, nothing but respect for Stevie Y. There were certainly plenty of Wings I disliked though...😂
It was hard as a Canucks fan having Joe and the Avalanche constantly dunk on us. I mean, that was our guy. Burnaby Joe. Every single person I played with, and myself, we all had Joe Sakic curves. That was how you scored with a wrist shot. When composite sticks came around and not everybody could spend $300 on a stick... Well you wanted to. Joe was the best player at the 2002 Olympics where we won our first gold in 50 years. Felt like a king having an Easton Synergy at the time.
Yup, Easton Synergy, Sakic curve. I still have that stick.
IMO the greatest era of NHL hockey. It was a great time to be a fan. The days of having REAL captains is long gone. Sakic Stevie Y, Messier, Iginla, Nasland, Stevens, Linden, Lindros, Kariya, Hatcher, Modano, Peca, Bourque, Tkachuk, Sundin, Pronger, Primeau, Chelios - Won't ever be another class of captains like what we had in the 90's & 2000's.
There’s so many greats not on your list but I agree man. What an era
Crosby is like them, i can't think of anyone else.
@@Silentstep66 He is a great player, but I have no respect for him as a person.
@thethomasj1795 that is one of the dumbest fucking takes I've ever seen. He's essentially the model athlete, why doesn't the average Joe have respect for Crosby? Explain
totally agree. This was the golden age of NHL hockey. early 90's through about 2002 or so.
The start to the Cap era. The deal was so outrageous that the NHLPA lost their minds. It brought the elite talent salary from around $4m to $7-$8m in one off season. For a deal like this to happen so soon after the 95 lockout, it inevitably snowballed into the 05 lockout.
Burnaby Joe. I'm not even an Avs fan and I have a Sakic sweater. That's how good he was.
Sakic, Forsberg and Roy were my favorite players on the Colorado Avalanche back in the early 2000's
One of my favorite players from childhood. Can't wait to see :)
A legend 🙌
One of the best to wear the best number in hockey #19
what a legend sakic lets go
what a legend sakic. My first hockey idol.
Sakic and Yzerman, two of greatest captain in hockey history. Their desire to win was incredible , always preached by example and stayed humble
I forgot about this move by the Rangers. Very bold on their part, considering what happened a few years earlier with St Louis
I was waiting for this one thanks god
THAT snap wrist-shot. What a player.
Snap shot*
@@Fraustyy nah, it's OK to mention the wrist when it comes to Joe Sakic.
He's a perfect example of a classy hockey player. Much respect to him. But messier is my boy! The 🫎
Nice totally watching this
Oh yesssssssssss
Neil Smith and the NY Rangers inadvertently saved the Colorado Avalanche. That offer sheet galvanized the franchise, and fan base.
Neil Smith made two HUGE blunders that off-season.
1. He played games with Mark Messier and let him walk. A decision that was disastrous for both the Rangers and Messier.
2. He didn't offer Sakic ENOUGH money. It should have been 3 years $ 25 Million, with a $20 million signing bonus.
SAVING
Joe sakic stanley kupasinda çok şıktı mükemmel
Nays 🤝
Super good
You should do a documentary about Alexander mogilny defecting from the USSR to play for the Buffalo Sabers
There already is one, it’s called defector and I believe it was sportsnet that commissioned it. Its definitely on CZcams though
@@hughmungus_698the movie red army kinda goes over it a little too iirc
I will never forget watching him play a Jr game in Victoria, he was destined to be a superstar.
was that when he played for graham james?
Sakic was my first hockey idol

Çox maraqlı və superdi ❤❤
It's a very interesting film, worth watching
I despise the Avs as a lifelong Wings fan. Sakic was a class act and a heck of a hockey player. What an era in that rivalry of those teams fighting for the league every year
ela mohtesem cox beyendim uğurludur👍👍👍👍👍
Джо Сакик - топ!
Im going to have "Fif-teen. Million. Dollar. Up. Front. Signing. Bonus." with the punctuated beat for each syllable, stuck in my head the rest of the day!
An interesting and artistic movie.
Life long GoldenKnight fan here.
Honestly, if the Avs had let him walk I don't think they win the Cup in 2001.
Muazzam bir film ☺️☺️

İzlenmesi gereken bir film
Super
As amazing as those Colorado teams were , still hard to believe they only got 2 chips. With a few more lucky bounces and without the Red Wings in the way, Colorado could have had 4-5 chips.
There was also the two blown 3-1 series leads in 98 and 03. And when they did get by the Red Wings in 1999 and 2000, it was Dallas who was in the way in the conference finals.
duh. these were the highest-spending franchises from that era. most other teams could not afford (or the owners did not want to spend) to have the same level rosters they could. the salary cap has levelled the playing field, and the league is far better off now.
@@iansteelmatheson The NHL could be a much bigger entity, especially if the salary cap wasn't the strictest cap in all major sports in North America. Owners still don't spend if they don't want to, the salary cap floor can be circumvented and does happen plenty of times, especially when you have the richest clubs having to give money to teams that are bleeding money because they have no fans. Also, even before the cap you have multiple teams winning more than 1 cup like Pittsburgh, Detroit, Colorado and New Jersey but, people act like the salary cap is why there's more than 1 cup winner but despite having multiple teams winning 2 or more cups like LA, Tampa, Chicago, and Pittsburgh .
They actually lost to the Dallas stars in the conference finals twice. People always think of the red wings and avalanche but the Dallas stars were a bigger thorn in the panties for the avalanche.
@@iansteelmathesonI think it’s cyclic. It’s good to have super teams for a while to drum up fanfare, and then even out the playing field so everyone can get a piece of the pie.
Macera ve aksiyon dolu bir film olmuş izleme değer 👍
🤯🤯
