  • Hello and welcome to the first video of 2024, and today we are kicking the year off with our annual visit to Stafford on the West Coast Mainline where you'll be seeing countless services from Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway and Cross Country with freight from GBRF, DB Cargo UK, Colas Rail, DRS and Royal Mail. We also have various trains coming through on test courtesy of London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway.
    Stafford station is a fairly large station and I used as a junction station for traffic travelling all over the country. Services from this station serve Manchester, Liverpool, Crewe and stations to the South of England. There are two lines meeting at this station, the main branch of the West Coast Mainline that goes via the Trent Valley and the second section that takes the line through the heart of Birmingham which allows for greater connections from Birmingham New Street.
    The station was opened by the Grand Junction Railway in 1837. This was the first station to be built on the site, however it soon became inadequate because of the amount of passengers and trains using the station which then meant that a second station was built in 1844 which was then superseded by another station in 1862. Eventually all three getting replaced by the current station in 1962 to follow the modernisation of the West Coast Mainline.
    My next film will be Part 2.

    Great video Bet those LNWR 730s will be 10 coaches when they come into service because I’m hearing that they will be 3 coaches and 5 coaches only it would be better for them to also be 10 coaches especially during peak time like how they do with the 720s in the morning and evening

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 2 měsíci

      The 70 was always going to sound great for sure, in regards to the better of the three stations I would have to say that Manchester Piccadilly would be the best to go to in terms of variety

  • @nottinghamtransportenthusi2784

    The scrap run was cancelled altogether in the end and the 11:33 Cross Country service to Manchester Piccadilly from Bournemouth had 221130 doing the honours for it. It looked like a lot of test runs were taking place and I have no doubt we'll see more with Avanti West Coast as well before the introduction of their new bi-mode trains into service replacing the 221 Super Voyager fleet, which I'm going to assume will be heading for Cross Country with their tilting mechanisms removed if rumours believe to be true although we probably won't know yet.

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 2 měsíci

      It is a shame that the scrap run was cancelled as I was looking forward to seeing that, but I've still got plenty more chances to see one on the move. It does seem strange that Cross Country remove the tilting mechanism from the 221s as it just slows the trains down that little bit more and increases the journey times

  • @MrTudwud

    The "Voyagers" are mainly hated by passengers. I can't stand the things, having had to stand on them for long distances on so many occasions. You mention "4 car trains on long distance services" - I can't agree more. You may as well call them 3 cars in the case of the "Voyagers" as 1st class takes up one other. The new units being built in 3 and 5 car rakes are also a worry as these are already replacing 4 (3 car) and 8 (5 car) trains. I have seen two 3s replacing 8s too. I have mentioned this on other channels and received mixed replies. You have called out Transport for Wales for doing this on a number of occasions and, just before Christmas (at Shrewsbury) a 2 car 158 turned up there on a working to Birmingham International. Apart from the already packed train, there were enough people waiting on the platform to fill three 158s! (maybe even more) and most had large suitcases with them. The inevitable rows started when most were unable to board the train and had to join an empty "stopper" West Midlands service where they would have to change at Birmingham New Street to get to the airport. It seems to me that the TOCs are either ignoring the agreed "loading" arrangements or something radical has changed the rules, hence all these short trains.

      Why?

    • @claireleonard-cx1xj
      @claireleonard-cx1xj Před 5 měsíci

      Are the vogagers hated

    • @MrTudwud
      @MrTudwud Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@claireleonard-cx1xjI've already explained "why". Passengers get really annoyed with Voyagers turning up already full before they get on; standing for ages and the fact that one quarter of a 4 car version is first class. 4 and 5 car versions have replaced 7 car HSTs and 8 coach locomotive hauled trains in the "Inter City" era. The first dozen trips I made on these units was standing up and the total time standing on these trips was 15 and a half hours. Since then, at least half of all my (many) journeys on them has been spent in the vertical position, and the rest hopping from carriage to carriage trying to find a vacated, non-reserved seat for a portion of the journey. IMO, that's "why".

    • @keiranclarke2955
      @keiranclarke2955 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I actually love the voyagers. I like the noises of them when they depart and I like how fast and far they go to. I would love to travel on a voyager. I'm probably the only one who loves the voyagers. Sorry to disappoint the rest of you.

    • @MrTudwud
      @MrTudwud Před 5 měsíci

      @@keiranclarke2955 You can be a railway enthusiast; you can be a passenger; you can be both. Everybody is entitled to their opinions railway-wise and both passengers and enthusiasts will "love or hate" locos/units etc. for all sorts of reasons. When you travel extensively on long-distance services like I do, I have come to expect a "train" with the capacity to operate the service it is allocated to. IMO, the Voyagers have never done this and, for the most part, on virtually every journey I have made on them, they have been packed to standing with every seat reserved for all or multiple parts of the journey. This problem is not just confined to "Voyagers" either; 2 car "Sprinters"/3 car TP units etc. are also responsible for packed to standing trains. If I dropped my travel and concentrated solely on enthusiasm, I might hold a different opinion. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so!

  • @TheTrainSpotter2005
    @TheTrainSpotter2005 Před 5 měsíci

    19:02 In the end it’s really about capacity issues. These were ordered for frequency based back in Virgin CrossCountry days and that idea was bad enough. The XC side is where the hate is mainly targeted not just capacity, but toilet and smell issues. As they say you can’t properly balance Frequency and Capacity. Although the Avanti side can do at least some form of better when they don’t short form to 5.
    I can’t really blame XC for any of this with there fleet of 58 voyagers (barley enough for double headers) and often under fire about capacity with the Dft reluctant decision of pushing away the much needed HST. Whilst they are due to receive 7 from Avanti once released, it still wouldn’t be enough to fill in the gaps!

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 2 měsíci

      XC really need to invest in some purpose built rolling stock suited for long distance intercity travel with much better capacity

    On rtt it says the scrap move was cancelled due to a late arrival of an inbound service. The light engine move from Derby going to pick it up was cancelled at Lichfield trent Valley due to the train operators request.

    Hello Sir ! . I live near Crewe and in the past I often would catch the train to Manchester Pic for shopping trips and it would cost off peak about £13.00 return , I've not been for a while as I'm put off by the lack of trains running now . Do you think that Virgin ran a better service as I do ?

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 2 měsíci

      Hello there, I do have to say with the experience I've had with Avanti West Coast I can't say that they are any better or worse than Virgin Trains in all honesty. Although I do know that they are causing a lot of upset with how they are changing up some of the routes that they are operating and some of their calling patterns
