    Newport is accessible from either New York or Boston... Kind of. New York and Boston are linked by Acela, which is one of our very few higher speed trains. And between them is Providence Rhode Island, which is also worth a visit. From there you can catch a bus to Newport. Or rent a car, if that's more your speed.

    Dear Fraser,
    Re the Breakers, FYI, a goodly part of the furnishings were "looted" by the Vanderbilt family from the remains of the Grandes Tuileries Palace in Paris, which was looted and then partially burned during the French Commune of 1871 (the furnishings themselves had been spared destruction -- they were removed before the Palace had been burned). Additionally, a goodly portion of the furnishings were purchased from the the Duke and Duchess of Orléans, the direct descendants of Louis XVI, who while still quite wealthy, were in need of liquid assets. Finally, the Vanderbilts purchased other "requested" items from the Hotel Drout, Paris, a famous auction house which sourced the items (meaning looted them). In today's world, none of this would have been allowed to leave France.
    The next time you are in New York, please go visit the Frick Museum on East 71st and Fifth Avenue --- only because the Frick Family and the Vanderbilts were in a competition as to who could "loot" the most from "les décombres" of Versailles, Fontainebleau, les Tuileries, etc. The Frick Mansion is more Versailles than Versailles. The Frick family had entire rooms of Fontainebleau "vandalisées" and carted off, literally piece by piece to the United States. Ditto the Vanderbilts for Versailles. This was a national shame then and it remains a national shame now.

    The tender issues are more indicative of cruise lines building ships that are continually increasing in size and sending them to destinations that don't have the infrastructure to handle them. A city like Newport goes into meltdown when dealing with a ship over about 2000 passengers as they just can't handle the volume of tender activity needed to get everyone ashore in a timely manner.

    • @FraserAtSea
      @FraserAtSea  Před měsícem +2

      Thanks for watching, Scott. Really good point - I saw the smaller ship docked with us operate with no lines, so maybe you’re absolutely right - it must be a nightmare welcoming so many people. Maybe we’ll see in future where only the smaller ships will tender here - who knows…!!

      This is a wonderful vlog! I am going on the Breakaway on 9/1 for Canada/New England and Newport was cancelled due to it being Labor Day Weekend and the crowds would have been too much. I live in a tourist town and people flock here by train and in the fall, boat (SeaStreak) for leaf peeping and it is crazy busy and crowded, so I get it and sympathize with the Bar Harbor residents. I'm so excited for my trip and I'm enjoying your videos! I guess the person who made your coffee is a fan of the TV show "Fraiser" and maybe not the 78th Fraser Highlanders, lol (I play the pipes).

    That was fun, as usual. Sorry about your disembarkation and embarkation experience. It’s not the end for small ports, though, you just need to be on the right ship. The Jewel/Prima class ships are perfect for places like Newport - fewer people, and maybe no need to tender (mind, I do like a tender, Mykonos/Santorini are my favourites). Keep those megaships for the Caribbean where most people just want to go to the private beaches.
    Wow, those ‘cottages’!
    Not ‘line’ Fraser, queue! Or maybe alternate between them. for the Yanks!
    O’Sheehan’s is my favourite place at sea, though it is weird that if you order a starter and a main they bring them about two minutes apart. Asking the lovely staff members to stagger helps, but we’ve taken to not ordering the main until we’ve finished the starter. I love the potato skins shepherds pie, and the little fish and chips thingies.
    We’ve never managed to catch Choir of Man, it does look good (mind, have they ever actually seen a British pub?). It always seems to be Blazing Boots on the ships we use… maybe we do need to get on a huge ship! Steve and I always sit on the front row nowadays so as not to be distracted by folk videoing bits of the show. Blooming vloggers, eh?
    Roll on the next film - Mart

    • @FraserAtSea
      @FraserAtSea  Před měsícem +1

      Ha, I love this comment. Yeah, I should maybe ask them to stagger it, but to be honest I’m happy with it coming close together - I usually hate waiting once I’ve ordered - I just want to eat, so am always happy when it arrives, haha!
      So it’s YOUR head that’s getting in the way when I’m trying to get the perfect shot in the theatre, hahah!

    Great video and commentary! I went to Newport on Princess last year and am stopping there again with Princess this year. I think our time in port is longer. And my memory from last year is that the tender boats were large and ran one right after the other so the waits on each end were not long. I did a really interesting historical walking tour last year, emphasizing the colonial history and slave trade. This year, i am looking forward to the Cliff Walk.

      @FraserAtSea because of its outstanding harbor, Newport was an economic powerhouse. At one point, it's population was greater than New York City's. It was the central point for shipping, barrel-making, and rum. Sugar and slaves came in; rum, barrels, products derived from whales, and other goods went out. And a center for whaling.

    5pm tender return was my guess. Taking four of our adult kids to the Bahamas for our last New Year’s living in America. Chose Royal Caribbean mainly because the ship docks at all ports. Have heard a great many tender related stories of missed or might as well be missed ports, not to mention waiting times, and well, “making the best of things” like tender lines isn’t my superpower😂.
