I think that the larger projects are likely to be cut first, the one's where a customer may take a loan out for it. Small repairs and projects are less likely to go away.

In 2008 the ones who stubbornly kept prices high at the beginning of the recession were the ones who went out of business permanently (in general). Good luck!
@@thearmy88ify comparing now to 2008 is apples to oranges. It’s not anywhere close to being the same. We did lower prices back then but not so low we hurt our business. A lot of that also depends on your customer base (commercial/residential).
@@landmarkcreations1183 Just about every stat is worse now than in 2007/8. Take a look at housing cost vs income ratios compared to then (many times worse). We are in for a world of hurt. I work for a company that hires thousands of subs throughout the US and OCONUS so I have all of that data from before during and after the 2008 crisis. I saw first hand what happens to stubborn contractors.

If things cost more and you charge less, there may not be enough to pay the bills. Stubborn or not, math will always be math and bills must be paid.
People with money want a quality, financially stable remodeler, etc. Especially during tough times when everyone with a hammer & saw try to get quality work.
I’ve been tempted over the last couple years to hire 1-2 guys. Glad I held off for the time being. I can feel it coming as well and glad I don’t have the responsibility of others’ livelihoods. Closing rate has been crap for a few months but at the same time….this sets us up for a great comeback when the pendulum swings back again!
As an ohioian we will never go out of work. You need to get signed up with restoration company’s, it’s basically remodeling from a worse state. You get car impacts, commercial/residential water losses, fire losses.. pays extremely well and the work will never stop coming in. If you can remodel a home, you could restore hotels, multi family’s etc.
"No more expensive vacations." That's usually the number one thing people cut out of their budget, which sucks for me. I'm the facility manager for a couple hotels. The way I get money to keep our properties in top order is high room occupancy. These next two to four years are going to be tough for the hospitality industry. As times are still "good" but occupancy is low right now because of the season, I'm working myself and my crew to the ground to get things back to where we can just maintain the grounds with no major renovations scheduled for past April. I'll probably be able to keep all my employees through summer, but starting August I'll probably have to let at least one or two go.
So I wasnt so smart, I spent alot of money growing business over the last two years. Spent alot of money on a new shop and new tools and adding new capabilities to the shop. As of now I am in the peak debt of my life. I'm hoping I can pay for most of it with a good summer of work. But I wont know til april, april to September is where 98% of my income comes from. Most of my income is what I'd luxury purchases. Awnings, decks, patios, landscaping and painting. Let's hope I can atleast match last years numbers.
Re finances, if you have any bank IRA accounts make sure you're getting the best interest rates. My bank just raised interest rates from 0.02% to 3.0% but I had to be proactive & ask about better rates to get it. A big percentage difference. And I had to lock-in for a 1 year term to have it. (It's just one of a few small local emergency savings accounts & not my main retirement investment source. Which is struggling, smh.)

Contractors price gouging for basic construction over the recent times have been screwing friends, family, community.and that is what running the economy prices through the roof...the price gougers are disgusting....

Some money is better than no money. I think I will increase my prices as nothing has gone down. My free time is more valuable. I use it to work on our old little house making upgrades that are not wallet breaking. If people do not value my time, I do not need to be there.
Lowering prices is never a good idea. Add value that your competitors don't. The stash should be enough. Downturns often mean people don't buy new and instead fix up what they have. Don't panic.

I disagree -- more people are still working from home than ever before. The labor market is still tight in many areas, so -- with the exception of people in boom/bust tech -- people are still employed and their houses are still falling apart. I don't think people should reduce their rates automatically, since underlying inflation continues to rise.
The law of supply and demand sets the price. I have to have pricing that meets the demand. If I don't adjust I don't work. This is the same reason new car prices are going down.

A fellow contractor made a good point to me about the housing market going down and it makes good sense. He said that the higher quality handyman and contractor will be in higher demand because someone that wants to sell their house needs to make it stand out more in a cold market.

I think it’s better to work solo in the long run. Literally have to work and stress 2x for almost the same pay and wayyy less freedom.

I've had to cut my paint prices from $1.8/sqft to $1.1 - 1.2. Basically reducing my total profit by 1500 or so on paint projects
