Many customers don’t know what kind of businesses they’re dealing with. A big contractor will always charge more money because they think big, act big and do things in a big manner to get things done super fast. If you don’t want to spend top $$$; then you should look for a small shop craftsman or self-employed technician who can get the job done, but at a slower and “bare bones” level.

When we have momentum going there is no rest, no vacation, no nothing except bleeding every inch out of the momentum, because we know that momentum naturally peters out. OK, now we can rest, recharge, go on vacation, etc. Then the job is picking up momentum again and riding that wave as long as it lasts. It takes discipline and drive to power through, but it's really satisfying with a financial cushion to show for it. My son has finally realized that I'm not some slave driving a-hole and he's on the program now. Working with my son has been the most challenging and rewarding endeavor and I love it.

I charge all my business expenses to my business debit card. I get an annual summary broken down by category/business name and each charge is listed and is totaled at the bottom of each category. I simply use these numbers for my tax return. The one audit I had, I was informed by the IRS auditor that this was acceptable. I didn't need every individual receipt. In regards to tracking mileage, I was told that if I tracked mileage once a month each quarter and averaged my annual mileage based on those numbers, that was acceptable too. Maybe he was a lenient auditor but Ive been doing this for years now and no issues.

I love how people talk about what they made on a job… but never talk about all the work it takes to acquire a lead, close and sell a job. All that time costs money so you didn’t really make 3k in 6hrs.

My opinion is this is going on all day everyday. I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t charge a few thousand for a $400 heater install 😂. $5000 isn’t fair either.

Good advice. Ive been doing anything and everything for 20 years. Self employed with no advertising just referrals at this point. I work alone or with 1 or 2 part time guys when theyre available. People will give you all the business if you treat them right. I just bid a garbage disposal swap and 3 drywall patches at clients house yesterday. I love me some SPEEDSET MUD and a blow dryer. Gonna clean some gutters and install guards this week after hours. Starting a full basement finish job this week too. Cant keep people waiting to long either for small jobs. Squeeze easy jobs in ASAP while making good progress daily on bigger jobs keeps everybody happy. Quality matters for repeat business.

I only work for the wealthy , they are polite , keep it professional and just want it done and will pay very well and with a smile . The wealthy are also very well connected , I’ve been sent off on more than one working vacation to take care of the lake house

Just put up two ads up for drywall repair. I have had so much experience doing this and usually advertise myself as a handyman, but I want to see what happens if I just focus on drywall repair. $20 investment to see what happens.

Thanks for all your info. I have an opportunity to maintain about 45 rental houses owned by 1 couple. I have done some jobs for them in the past, and they say they have enough work for a full time person. They are willing to pay a good wage because they've had a hard time finding a good dependable person to do the work. I have never been self employed, so some aspects make me a little nervous. I'm considering taking the leap. Tired of working for companies making just enough to get by.

When I was in school for building trades my teacher didnt give a fuck if we learned building or not, but the 4 kids that were going off to competition, oh he made sure they knew everything and it was complete bullshit. Who the fuck knows how to chase voltage or the proper concrete mix for tuck pointing. My neighbor started a small handyman business runs it under an LLC. He did a roof repair job for an old guy and charged him $700 everything went good and he had an appointment the following week with the old dude for some more work that he need done on his home. My neighbor couldn't make it to the appointment that they set and the old dude got mad and sued him for a $1000+ and reported him to the contractors board who want $5000+ for contracting without a license. This is the kind of garbage that happens in CA for trying to make a few bucks.

Today!!!, I got my DBA here in Houston Texas , cost $26 . I'm planning on getting my LLC next year . That's one thing I love about Texas, it's easy to become self employed not like California where you must have 4 years of verifiable experience, take a Contractors course that costs several thousand dollars, get workmans comp insurance even though you're the only employee and all kinds of rules and regulations that will simply increase the cost of doing business.
