The idle was a little rough but the p0300 code would pop up minutes into a test drive after clearing the code. If you don't have codes then check for dirty throttle body, plugs, and vacuum leaks before you proceed any futher. Also these engines are known for carbon build up on the intake valves. You may want to perform a carbon blast (induction service) as well. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

4:14 where does that broken wire of debri get caught up in? So p0300 should be checked against camshaft and/or timing belt?

Wow! Just have to say thanks. Unbelievable video writeup. I love it when simple tips can save people thousands of dollars. Ive always been a mustang guy until I inherited a 99 millenia about a year ago. I really don't know much about anything mazda, but im learning fast. With spring finally in full force here in ohio I've started to get the car back into new working order, it only has 78,000 on it. I stumbled across your vid just doing research on common problems. I will be changing that belt asap, ive been working on cars for about 17 years and have seen some weird shit, this is top 10. Can't believe you only skipped a couple teeth with that much debris in there, that would've been the certain death of an engine with a chain going through guides, very lucky! From the small amount that I have researched so far, i have found these are great motors if you take care of them, seems like you have now proven that. thanks again man
I bought 1 of these cars for my wife and although they look stylish they are just pure junk. The 1 I bought has just been a big money pit. I have replaced injectors, timing belt, idler pully broke and jumped time, valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, cap, rotary button, fuel filter the list goes on and on now six months later the damn thing starts acting up again. I'm at the end of the road with this turd. This was my first and last mazda I will ever buy.....
Sorry, I'm in NC. That might be a little to far away to travel. Try to find a good Mazda tech in your area. I'm sure they will be able to check your timing marks to determine if your car has the same problem. Thanks for the comment and take care.
very informational Im currently having this problem with my 2000 mazda millenia i already changed the plugs and it didnt help much i tightened the belt and a lot of the time it acts like it doesnt want to start but I will check my cam shaft timing and hopefully it will fix the problem

having the same problem, just had a new timing belt and water pump put in but still rough idles and misfires. Mechanic told me he thinks its the plugs and wires and needs a valve cover seal.
I love my 1998 Mazda Millenia, she's been a great car for 3 years. Got a great pirce 500$ from a friend, never had a major issue until now. She won't run right, very rough after being ran out of gas by a friend. Hope the fuel filter is the issue, but I don't know where the filter is on this model can you help me?
I hav3 2002 mazda millenia took it to advance auto parts for engine light diagnostics and told me cyclinder 3 misfire and mentioned a coil also would it have anything to do with the smell of exhaust fumes coming inside the car?

Look inside the glove box. There is a little switch for the trunk lock release. It's a safety feature
How rough was your idle? I noticed my car has a similar problem, the idle seems rough, but not too bad. I had my engine replaced a few months back. the idle seemes rough then too. I wonder if it could just be my plugs?
please are you anywhere close to chicago ohio and kentucky,i have had this problem with my 02 2.5L and the dealers have been ripping me off with no success
