GARY ANDERSON BLASTS MEDIA OVER LUKE LITTLER

- Gary Anderson gave the media a serious warning over their attention on 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler at the PDC World Darts Championship.
The Flying Scotsman could meet the teenager in the quarter-finals at the Alexandra Palace if he defeats Brendan Dolan in the fourth round and Littler takes care of fellow legend Raymond van Barneveld.
But Anderson would not be drawn on the hype surrounding the teenager, who is among the favourites for glory, and instead blasted the media coverage that could put too much pressure on his shoulders.
The two-time world champion used Josh Rock as an example of how young stars can go off the boil if they are touted as the "next big thing."
"Let the boy play darts. If it all goes wrong, give yourselves a pat on the back."
Speaking after his victory over Boris Krcmar on Friday night, Anderson said: "We had another youngster called Josh Rock that all you press destroyed. So if it ever goes tits up with Luke, then give yourself a pat on the back. That's the way it's going. Let the boy play darts.
"Today he's had cameras, zoom calls, Sky meetings. He's had a great tournament but what happens if it goes Pete Tong now. You guys have ruined it. Just like Josh Rock, fantastic player but you guys have set him back.
"You have no idea how many young dart players we see coming through the system with people saying 'this is going to be the next best thing'. Pressure goes on them, all goes Pete Tong, where are they now? Go back the last 10 years tell me when all those youngsters are now?" - Sport
Again Gary is spot on. The press in this country is the worst. Stupid questions and watch out for more intrusion into his life. Someone needs to warn him. Respect Gary...

Utter scum. I'm an English man and it takes a Scotsman to put the media in its place. Where are the others ??? Too Scared to take the media on I expect.
Maybe all the darts players would like to just go back to the BDO, crap prize money, minimal tournaments, no sponsorship. Lots of privacy. Back to the days where you win the world championship on a Sunday and back at work on the Monday.

This is when littlers close circle(family, coaches etc) need to shield him from over exposure to prevent him to being thrown on a scrap heap once the media have had their way with him. Fair play to Gary on this matter

Interesting when Gary finished his speech. The next journalist who spoke didn’t engage regarding this issue, instead chose to completely disregard what he’d just said. As the journals in that room know he’s right

Whilst there is nothing wrong with recognising the fact that Luke is indeed an exceptional talent for 16 years of age and that he is deserving of some media attention! The fact is that they always have to go into "overkill" mode and it does put extra pressure on these young talents that are coming through! Not just in darts I might add. I think we have all got the message by now! Thank you for the Media and Press attention but now is the time to take a back seat and let the lad concentrate on his darts! Well said Gary btw!
And how does that pressure work. Lemme explain in short: if u fill in these high expectations (the highest) its gonna be, yeah ok, we said that was what he gonna do. Whats special about that? thats normal.
And then when he doesnt fill in these expectations he is gonna feel like a loser. So u can never win. Never.
What these idiots do is all focus on outcome, ridiculous joyless outcome. They know shit about psycholgical knowledge. Which creates an arrogant stupid environment, which these idiots create. Although the vast majority of comments on this video seem to agree the press shouldn't put the spotlight on him too much...isn't that the way of the sport nowadays? Anderson won 2 and they went on about the 3rd straight away...same story with Lewis. Then the story of van gerwen being the greatest player of all time and winning more titles than Taylor...because he was young and so much better of the rest at the time. It's a pressure that the best players have to learn that it's part of the game nowadays and that's why the best make such a good living from it...the media/exposure is such a big part of it now. All the best to Littler...he's clearly a rare talent and seems to be taking it all in his stride so far...super impressive 👏

Of course it’s a sensational sporting story, and the media are going to be all over it like a bad rash, but you have to remember that Littler is still not yet turned 17, just a kid. He’s shown remarkable maturity so far, but for heaven’s sake, give him room to breathe!! Even non-darting enthusiasts have got the message by now. Back off and let the boy play.

I Think gary Anderson as got a good point. This young dart player is being built up and built up to a point where he needs to be more nurtured, he only 16. He's talking like the kid is David Beckham. 95% of the people watching the darts over Christmas and new year won't think 1 second about it until next Christmas. Its barely on the TV and other than now, never in the mainstream media. The boy will play darts and then fade back to obscurity away from the public eye until next Christmas, if he qualifies again.

Sorry but disagree with Gary here. If you're playing on the world stage and you're pretty good (regardless of age), then it's only normal the media and the public will want to know you and cheer you on. That's normal human behaviour.

Modern Darts was invented in the 1890's and it only became a Professional Sport after the rise in popularity in the late 1970's and 1980's AFTER it was shown on TV and covered in Newspapers. Please tell me of these full-time Darts players that you know of who were making money in the early part of the 20th Century.
