Doing it Right This Time! Making a Super Student in The Sims 4 Discover University

  • I wanted to go back to Discover University (courtesy of EA Game Changers), to make my Sim's experience less hectic. To make the experience more fun for myself and manage to join actual student organizations, not just rush to keep up with homework in four classes. All in all, the experience was a success but does demonstrate a few weaknesses in the systems for this Expansion.

    I raised a toddler to get Top Notch Toddler, completed the 4 child aspirations to get the Gifted traits, completed scouts to get the trait from that, completed high school with an A, maxed out several skills waiting to age up, went to college for a physics degree, (after several attempts) completed 3 weeks of college with a GPA of an A+, graduated with honors, and became an engineer. This is a good way to go if you hate having fun. I recommend it.

      Wow. yeah.... it'd work out a bit better than here to stack literally all of it, thanks to all the side bonuses. I'd have covered them in this but too few skills/emotions play a role in school performance (or else this could've definitely been a lot more comprehensive) On the flip side of this topic some people want it to be more difficult so I'm planning to try Zero's mods for tuition (requiring higher student loans)/honors requirements but I'm waiting until a few more catch my eye.

    • @HerHollyness
      @HerHollyness Před 4 lety +47

      @@CarlsSimGuides Zero's mods don't really make the gameplay more difficult, just raise the tuition, make it harder to get accepted for a distinguished degree, and (if you like) restrict certain careers to graduates. I love them because they make it more realistic!

      @CarlsSimGuides  Před 4 lety +16

      @@HerHollyness Right, it might set a speed limit on you after graduation though. I don't like how you're almost instantly out of debt. @@CarlsSimGuides Usually I'm not one of those people that like challenges, I want to relax when I play but the university gameplay is just plain boring the moment you get to the second term. It's all the same over and over. I wouldn't want to play through that a second time. I would have liked to see more variety. You research, you study, you do homework, a term paper, a presentation, a final exam... and then it all starts again. It would have been more interesting if there were interactive assignments. Some examples: interview other sims, gather some type of items, craft something, cook, photograph and so on, each specific for a degree or elective. In the beginning the more varied gameplay comes from university groups but those become repetitive too soon enough. Just to say: I wouldn't have wanted more challenge but for sure more variety to keep me guessing what could have been thought of for each degree and go back with other sims to try it and see. Instead I watch others play different degrees and they're all the same as mine. The one I haven't seen so far is the robotics degree, maybe that one is different. If not, I don't think I'll ever have a sim attend university again. Been there, done that, that's enough.
      And all the fuss about the low tuition, from a european point of view, I just can't understand. From my standpoint, the tuition isn't at all that low but here in Italy, if you come from a low income family, university costs are very low. The higher expenses just go to books (it depends on the degree, medicine books are hella expensive) or the everyday cost of living (a room or house rent and food). I'm not able to see the fascination in being completely broke and in debt for university. So I guess that it all comes to the point of view: to me this version of university is more realistic, I find it somewhat balanced and reasonable. Just to give a concrete idea, I paid 700 euros per year for university, books not included, and I was lucky to live in the same town so I didn't have to rent a room. About 1000 simoleons per term is more than enough for me to define a reasonably expensive education.

    It would be nice if there was a visible grade meter to watch. Realistically if you are a student you typically do know how you are doing unless the entire grade rests on a final project.
    I played one semester with my sim - did the homework and the projects; and studied. I was late to one of the classes several times and forgot to do the homework for it. But still got an A+ in all the classes. Perhaps because I studied before the final???

      I agree some sort of bar like the kids/teens have would've been nice at the very least, but I can only assume maybe they decided against them as it would have been yet another thing shown for every single class and only further cluttered the already pretty full looking side panel - but that's just my guess.

    I decided to take the relaxed approach to university and never took more than 2 classes per term. It gives plenty of time to build skills, do assignments, join a group, building the role in the group and socialize. I kept my sim in a dorm for 4 out of 6 terms but I became more annoyed with dorm life the more it went on so I decided to build a house purposedly thought for having roommates: a little house for my sim and a bigger one for those who pay the rent (and I gave it the study spot trait). There's much less mess around, I only put 4 beds in the rented house, so that there wouldn't be a whole lot of people around but, since it's full of students, many of those who were in the dorms began visiting. This method keeps down the chaos of having too many sims active at every hour of day and night, it doesn't detract from the socializing aspect, if you use the locking on doors you have a true house for yourself with your spaces and a real kitchen and on top of all you make cash from the renting fees.
    I decided to also place a research machine and some fun and skill building stuff. I had the world come to me at my own conditions and my sims has earned an A+ in every single course she's taken without having to ignore her own needs.
    I don't think I'll ever play again in a dorm, it's too messy. And I also don't know if I'll ever play again a student, I'll probably cheat my future degrees because, after a while, it just gets boring. It's the same stuff over and over again. But there's one thing that I love in this pack, and it's not the wall showers, as I was expecting: it's rentable bed spots. I love having roommates. I've never liked having households with more than one sim but taking my sim around was never something I did really unless it was for a specific purpose (Outdoor retreat, Jungle adventure, Strangerville).
    Having the house inhabited by sims you don't have to take care of is such fun. THIS is a feature I'll always keep using from this pack.

      Do Sims just teleport form home lot (like a typical career) when you attend off-campus like that? I'm curious because that'd be super efficient for time. You'd think it'd be the case that living on campus would be easier but it sounds like a more custom experience is going to help a lot. The beds at the pre-made dorms are pretty awful and I suspect take a couple more hours to fill energy.

    • @MaeveWantsAillill
      @MaeveWantsAillill Před 4 lety +5

      @@CarlsSimGuides Yes, it works just like any rabbit hole career. You lose the option to get to class early but I don't feel it's that important. And, yes, the chance to fully customize your home gives the sim advantages they don't have in dorms. And you can pay university with the fees from renting the rooms.
      There's one thing I was confused about: when I moved my sims in the dorm, I kept receiving household bills although the game forces you to sell your house if you have just one sim in the household.
      I wish it had worked like the vacations system. I don't want to have two sims in the household just to have one being a placeholder for my house.

    The Secret Society is not a bad decision - I don't know how it ended up giving your Sim a more stressful life! Metals are hard to come by, but crystals and harvestables can be ordered from the computer; your roommates always come by with food; and otherwise you only need to be friendly with people to level up the membership. The Sprites (especially the Focused Sprite) are legitimately SO helpful. All you have to do is a couple of funny socials with someone when one appears, and you end up with a 12 hour buff! And when you max the membership and unlock their full potential (I won't spoil it), it's amazing!

    Gaaah, I can't wait to get this EP into my game!!
    I don't mind the cost of Uni in game though, I think as Americans we need to keep in mind that A LOT of the rest of the world doesn't have to pay, much less go into dept, to attend college - and I think the sims team did a decent job of finding a happy medium. Bc while we're saying "it's too cheap, it's not realistic", many other players from others places are wondering why their sims have to pay at all and think that's not very realistic to their experience. (Plus, I'm sure there are probably already mods for higher costs if that's really the route you want to torture your sim with, LOL.)
    "It means you're their little b***h" - LMAO!!! I LOLed far too loudly at that, lol... This is one area that, even without playing the pack yet myself, I find really disappointing - the sprites expect too much, and it doesn't seem like much of a group. Sucky, they could've been so much more and actually been a fun thing *worth* your time in doing.

    I really appreciate you showing the various aspects in an informative way rather than while trying to play a Sim... it makes it much more easy to see what's what. The more I see and read (comments and other places), the more I like the new 'things' in this pack and the less I like the university game-play itself. This will, in all likelihood, be my next pack buy (along with a game pack and stuff pack to bundle it so I get more for less) only because of the 'things'... like roommates, wall showers, little fridges, and the bike.
    - If I do take a Sim to university, I'll probably plant fruit trees and bushes, flowers, and vegetables all over the place. I'm really hoping that's possible. I'll also be searching around to see if there are any new gardening plants to add to my growing collection for my legacy family... they can only make money from selling gardening produce and having every one on the home lot is part of my challenge.

Tip: if you are a foxbury student, go to Foxbury commons and eat there for free at the cafeteria as long as you are a student there. the cafeteria is open during the day and part of the night. Foxbury commons also has some Research and Debate machines, computers as well as robot making machines. You can adjust the lot traits to include study spot there and even combine with peace and quiet to be able to read real fast. UBrite also has a commons too, I think it is Called Darby.

    If your sims is a spellcaster, get them to brew a potion of plentiful needs and learn the copysato spell. Never need to eat or sleep during the semester. Also, with glimmerstone, you can travel to magic realm to buy rare crystal or metal to make the offering. Moreover, if you learned transportation spell, you can choose to always use it and it save all the time walking around because you will just teleport to wherever you want to go. Saved me lot of time to join more organizations. I am getting 4 A+s in the soccer team, brainiacs, bot savants, foxbury Spirit squad and order of enchantment. I am making progress in levelling up in the organizations.

    I had been playing a young adult Sim who was an archaeologist when DU came out. Instead of making a whole new household, I just used him. When he applied, he had enough skills for a distinguished degree in Psychology which would also land him a chance at being a professor. Of course, my mind went to Archaeologist + Professor = Indiana Jones and immediately sat him down at his computer to enroll. I also switched his aspiration to the new one (he could go back to poking around in the dirt later). I found that in order for a single sim to live on campus, he'd have to move. As in, sell his house and move to the campus kind of move. Really?!? Here's yet another reason for me to like Sims 3 more than Sims 4. 3 Classes, an elective and being a member of the Spirit Squad was hectic but not near as difficult as I thought it would be. He did really well considering he had to travel home each night to sleep. At least he had good meals. He also had to keep up on his household bills the entire time he was in university, and thankfully, he had built up enough in his household funds to allow that. Also, during his time on the weekend between terms, he did his homework, typed and edited his term paper, and did the same for presentations if he had them. That certainly took a load off of him during the rest of the week and allowed him to attend functions with his classmates some evenings after his homework was done. I certainly would have liked the experience of living on campus though. I also found that studying really did nothing for his grades, but instead built up his logic. I have no idea how your Sim was able to sit in the library to do her work. When my Sim went there, he was constantly interrupted by other Sims wanting to chat. Which I guess solved his social needs... but geez! In the end, all he needed to do to graduate with all A+'s was to go to class... do his homework... turn in any term papers and presentations... and that was all that was needed.

      I was perplexed too by the selling the house thing. I got MCC installed and prevented through the settings for the empty houses to be filled automatically or I would have been pissed if, at the end of university, my sim wouldn't have found her house free to buy anymore. I would have really liked it more if the dorm experience worked as the vacations work. The system was there already, I don't understand why they didn't use it.

    • @tinapatterson9234
      @tinapatterson9234 Před 4 lety +1

      @@MaeveWantsAillill I could have done that, but he had so much in the way of personal stuff, and me being lazy, I didn't want to have to go through the house and store everything in the house inventory.
      But I agree, considering they have found a work-around for vacations, they really should have used a bit of effort (considering it's an expansion pack and not a game pack) to make it so that we could attend and not have to sell our houses.
      Maybe they have a thing about single people.

    • @TheInsaneVane
      @TheInsaneVane Před 2 lety

      Just sell the house INCLUDING the furniture. Everything stays in place as you left it because you are selling the furniture WITH the house. When you want to move home again you just rebuy the whole thing.
      If someone moved in in the meantime you can go to Manage Worlds, click on the house and use the Evict option in the bottom right. This kicks out the household and they "sell" the house and all furnishings, meaning the house is left as is and ready for you to move back to.
      If all the house residents die, the house is emptied of furniture, so you might want to move townies around (by Evicting them) if a single Elder moves in etc. Just check on the house occasionally while at Uni to see who is living there.
