CALKE ABBEY, DERBYSHIRE: THE UN-STATELY HOME | UK Travel EP.7

  • In this Uk travel episode I take you around Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, England. Formerly home to the Harpur-Crewe family, over the years the house fell into a serious state of disrepair and eventually, after the death of the last family member to live here, Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe, the estate passed into the hands of the National Trust. Calke Abbey is such a unique property in that the National Trust decided to preserve the house in all of its decay rather than taking the option to restore it to its former glory and I love the fascinating story this tells.

Likewise! I've been coming since the 90's as it's my local NT and like you, I still find things that I either haven't seen before and I didn't know about. I love making the time to visit throughout the year to watch how it changes with the seasons.

Oh lovely! That's a great walk :) There is one in the opposite direction, leaving the back entrance of Calke Abbey head right (instead of left towards the reservoir) and you'll go through a mini nature reserve before arriving at Staunton Harold Hall. The house is privately owned but the church is NT and there's a great garden centre there too. Worth keeping in mind if you get to pay a visit again ❀

You can visit places that have stood there for a thousand years or more. It's such a privilege to be able to visit these places and share them on this platform so others can enjoy a mini virtual tour. I hope you manage to make it across the pond and get to enjoy some of the UK soon :) If there's any places you would like to see on here please let me know and I'll endeavour to visit and share them here.

Danville,IL is seeking to kill all historic buildings. They neglected then leveled the Cannon Elementary school 2 mos ago and now have sights to level Breese Tower, which someone with vision bought and city set every possible roadblock not caring that pandemic upended plans. Those of us who have bought the old houses are harassed to get all the work done instantly while funds are lavished on the tea room that is not historic either. So frustrating

The history of America is the story of the Native Indigenous tribes who lived there for thousands of years. Unfortunately the incoming settlers and immigrants tried to destroy and erase that history and only part of it remains. If you're not Native American then you are a descendant of immigrants and from overseas. Your family's homelands are still there overseas for you to visit. Native people still exist. How are they keeping up the brickwork of the tunnels

The tunnels in the garden have not long been uncovered. They're still excavating another at the moment. It's nice that in a small way they are bringing the gardens back to their original life yet at the same time preserving a lot of the outbuildings in their dilapidated state. As far the tunnels that lead from the main courtyard in the house through to the brewery, I'm not sure what they do for the upkeep of those I'm afraid.

How are they preserving the fabrics and curtains.

The house is kept really dark and curtains/shutters drawn in most rooms so that the paintings and furnishings don't suffer from the light damage. Then in the winter months the National Trust tend to get teams of specialists in for expert cleaning and preservation of each item. Quite a task!

The Church of St Giles. Grade II listed and on the National Heritage List for England.
“The church is set in the grounds of the abbey and is referred in literature as a private manorial chapel to the great house but in fact it originally served the parish of Calke from at least 1160, (Charter of Countess Matilda), to around 1834.
The building itself is a Grade II listed building and is largely the result of restoration in 1827-1929 by Sir George Crewe after the building had become very dilapidated”
