Catching Flathead Catfish On LIVE White Bass In VIOLENT Waters!
Vložit
- čas přidán 5. 08. 2017
- The original plan was to catch skipjack, but there was no skipjack to be found. We switched to plan b, which was to catch live bluegill and go for flatheads. We anchored up on the wing wall and caught 7-8 flatheads and 2 channels. I caught a white bass and we used it as live bait--it worked! We caught a 10 lb flathead. White bass makes a great live bait. Be sure to check your state's regulations regarding live bait before trying it.

Chatt Cats Fishing I was about to say is that leagal😂😂
Chatt Cats Fishing Dont get your finger caught in that crack and fall in 😬
Chatt Cats Fishing it's illegal to use them in texas
Chatt Cats Fishing M.,KM,
Chatt Cats Fishing yeah.. I was gonna say, I'm pretty sure that's illegal lol
Loads of fun.Trying to get good bait is sometimes harder than catching a trophy cat,but that's what it takes to be successful.2 weeks ago I landed a 47 pound blue on a large white bass below Chickamauga dam and several more on cut white bass filletes .
I agree. Getting bait can be difficult. Congrats on getting a 47 lb blue on white bass. That must of been epic!
Man if you take a dunk in that water...you're gonna be meetin' up with St Peters!!!
It was crazy out there.
Another GREAT video! I've had success fishing for Flatties with cut White Bass but , never fished them live. That sunset at 16:44 reminds me of the days of fishing with my Dad and always wanting to fish a few minutes longer.
Thanks for watching! It's always fun fishing during sunrises and sunsets, especially with family. Great memories made.
warron7 ya my dad like to go on boats i don't bc I get scarf of the engine during it some like that but I like to spend time with him and shur fish at pounds...have a good day
Who kills a bass to catch a cat?? Not a fan
Not a bass (largie, smallie, spot). It is a white bass. Pretty much a trash fish.
Man that's some sketchy looking water lol I would have a vest on fore sure, great video guys!
Thanks for watching!
Yea... Get that close to a dam in most states, the dept of homeland security freaks out on you. They aren't nice about it at all.
Tennessee really doesn't care about how close you get to the dam. You can sit right next to it and even on top of it.
Dean Sheets I know that's right here in arkansas
Yea me and my brother in law fishing a power plant in Illinois on the des plaines rives guy came out with an assault rifle bulletproof vest and a side arm on his hip and he was pissed lol
Let alone hammering on one lol
There's a dam in Oklahoma that me and my dad fished our whole lives. There's a concrete walkway on the bank with railings where everybody would fish right up against the dam. But recently, they put up a damn fence that keeps people out, and they painted a line on the bank to signify that you can't cross it with your boat.. Pisses me off. Fish there all those years, and they randomly decide to regulate and protect that place like it's a damn military base.
Just a thought on safety there with your anchor system to the wall. Instead of using a piece of wood to jam into the wall. How about getting some climbing anchors they will grip a lot better and stay secure.
That's a good idea. I'll look into it.
Yeah they have these clamps that are "active" in the sense that as tension increases in the line, the clamps push tighter in their crevice.
I was thinking the same thing. It is ridiculous what we fisherman will do sometimes to catch fish.
Man, I would think its not legal to anchor to a wall like that. Could damage the dam over time with people anchoring to it.
They're called cams, or camelots. Looks like a #1 C4 would fit perfectly in there! It wouldn't come out at all if placed the right way.
They have special hookups used for rock climbing that would work great in those crevices to hold your boat more securely. The more pressure added, the tighter they grip. Not sure what they are called. Got 2 rollers with teeth on them that expand under pressure. See them used in a lot of mountain climbing vids.
Get some mountain climbing gear to hook up to wall.
For Sure. I was thinkin the same.
The biggest flat head I’ve caught out of Dale Hollow Lake was 14lbs. I caught it on a big bluegill.
You guys always have fun and catch some great fish. Love this channel
Thanks man. We had a great trip.
Hello from Oklahoma! How can it be a bait run, when you use all the bait? Looks like it was a fun trip! God Bless!
We were wanting to catch skipjack herring
This looks like Nickajack(sp) Dam in Tennessee, I have fished here many times. The fishing turns on when they turn on the power plant.
Great video. I'm in Louisiana they won't allow us to get that close. Now in Alabama we had a few we could run right up to it and I got alot if flat heads with shad. I used to sale catfish for living I miss that. But great video loved it. Have a good week sir. God bless
Thanks, Heath! Tight lines!
Y'all need some mountain climbing anchors. the metal ones they wedge in the cracks in the rocks to tie the safety lines to.
Thanks for the tip.
I would buy some climbing gear to hold the boat to that wall. those deals they use for holding rope in cracks would work great.
Thanks for the tip!
my dad use to take me under guntersville dam on the Tennessee river. caught a lot of fish snatching spoonbill ,and huge cats! then we would tie up to the lock walls at night and used chicken liver to fish on bottom and tear them up. we used skipjack ,shad cut bait and brim on our trotlines
That's awesome! I've never been to Guntersville Dam. I need to check that place out some day. Tight lines!
Those turbines and the boils it pushes up looks insane! I’d hate to have the fish run that way and right into the turbines lol!
Sometimes I'll catch catfish right in the turbines. It can be a little crazy fighting the fish in that current.
I fish mainly bank fish on a river,I always go after flatheads, using bluegills and the same set up like you 2,but I NEVER EVER catch any.EVER........Any tips????? PLEASE.When to go and what spots to look for???? Thank You
Flatheads take a lot of time and patience. Location is key for flatheads. Try fishing under bridges, dams, creek mouths, near downed trees. Fishing at night will get you the highest chance of catching one. Good luck and tight lines!
dang looks pretty dangerous with all that current lol. good fishing!
Yep. Always gotta be careful. Tight lines man!
Never swim against the current and go with the flow.
I wish we could get that close to the damn dams in texas.
Illegal in Texas to use gamefish as bait. White bass is a gamefish. Yellow bass however are not gamefish and make great live bait.
Cool. I've never used yellow bass as live bait. Worth a try for sure.
I find that flathead are the best eating between 7-20lbs anything over I release as well as anything under. We have caught some monsters though 70+ near damns like this and there is nothing better than that fight. We always let the big ones go. My motto is if you want a trophy take a photo and frame that.
Well said.
fished this wall a million times love these videos
Nice those Flatheads eat a lot of different fish cool I've seen people catching them on bluegills goldfish Carp bullheads
Thanks for watching!
i caught my pb blue cat on a piece of rolled up bread fishing bottom on my second cast it was 25 pounds
Awesome job! Nice fish!
try finding mooneye, aka tooth herring. they are tough to find sometimes but should be in Tennessee River. Usually we just dipnet a big ass gizzard shad or two and cut em up(Ohio and Beaver Rivers, PA)
I'm curious to know if the hook left in the fishes intestinal track will eventually kill it or will it rust out?
Hopefully it will rust out. Catfish are very resilient.
Those little white bass are great bait for the big bass down there as well😎
Awesome!
I caught alot of skip jack on a bobber and a tiny curly tail grub i also use 4 pound mono.
Cool. They fight hard.
Tieing off to that dam is extremely dangerous, not only that but its frowned upon by game management in south carolina
There's a nice spot down near the old bait shop. You know the old shop I'm talking about. Was a old building in the river . Grandpa and I would fish that and bring out some nice ones.
Yes, I think so. Lots of good fishing around there.
Thanks for watching!
Why don't you ever touch the fish or take it off the hook?
Normally I do but we had just had a great system going.
lol
What kind of reel is that on the pole you were using for the bluegill and sunfish?
DL1 West Point Trigger Reel
hey joe! nice video as always i was going to go fishing Saturday but i left my master switch on and drained all four of my batteries.
Uh oh.
White bass are running in my local river. Would cut bait or live work better for Flathead?
Really depends. I do best with live but my bigger ones have been on cut bait.
Chatt Cats Fishing OK got it. 1 cut 1 live.... Thanks
You guys in Tennessee must have very lax state regulations. Here in Maryland, if you get anywhere closer than 400 yards of a major dam they will send in the police to arrest you! And no way in hell would they let you tie your boat to the wall of a dam! Anyway, I just want to let you know just how lucky you guys are in living in a state that doesn't have strict regulations for everything! And awesome fishing by the way! Tight lines my friends!
I know what you are saying. I've fished at the Conowingo Dam in Maryland. The security is super strict up there. Nice stripers and flatheads to be caught there. I hope to go back there again one day soon. Thanks for watching! Tight lines!

That's some strong current. You guys stay safe out there. Personally, I wouldn't risk my life for it.
My pb channel could be used as live bait for the cats in there
That's crazy !! That spot screams 70 lber and those are the size I catch in my backyard creek . You just never know 😎
Pretty sure it is a healthy fine if you use game fish as bait in Texas. Nevertheless, nice catch.
Thanks for watching!
Its your personality that makes me love your videos man. Keep em comming. Shouts from kansaa
Thanks for watching, Fernando! Tight lines and FISH ON!
I heard the whites are biting pretty good at nickajack
White bass are fun to catch!
Great catches, but for over here, those are small. We usually pull in the 14 pounds or bigger, smallest at most is 7-8 pounds, all on land. Great video tho
Thanks for watching!
That's some rough water, nice video. Sucks you had to leave the hook in that flathead. I just started a channel!
Thanks for watching!
Gut hook & release? Damn, I would've put em out
Thats what im sayin, thems is eatin fish
Yup buddy not real pro's releasing a dead fish kind of stupid
@@robertoestevis6824 Not pro, huh?. Those hooks can rust out, novice. I've caught bass that were already gut hooked, and the hook was about rusted out. The fish was just fine.
I wouldn't underestimate these fish's digestive systems. They eat bone and fish spines all day long. Sure, the hook has a possibility of nicking something important, but more often then not these cats will be just fine.
Just became a subscriber, love your videos and methods, keep em coming!!!
Welcome to the channel Christopher! Fish on!
at the beginning what kind of reel is that? Never seen it before.
B'n'M Duck Commander
You are fishing with a good dude! For sure! Ty is awesome! Catch a bunch guys!
We had a great time!
Chart cats I'd love to go fishing with you man you catch monsters
Another good live or cut bait to use is Yellow Bass
I’ve fished below Watts Bar dam and it’s very dangerous. I seen boats on the bottom that have been sunk because of the currents. It’s very dangerous. We kept our life jackets on all the time we was up there. To be honest my 1st time had me worried.
WHAT IS THE REEL USED TO CATCH BAIT in the first part
B'n'M Duck Commander ultralight rod/reel combo
brother caught his 65 lber on a little perch, we callem all perch, goggle eye sunfish either way they all work the same except the warmouth they seem to not work great
65 lbs is a great fish!
You know its dangerous water when he keeps saying i think will be ok lmao
It was nice meeting u at the conference today brother! If u have any extra t shirts after the conference lmk and I'll buy a couple more if u can ship.
Yep. I have black t-shirts for $10 and long sleeve grey shirts for $15. Just let me know. Thanks!
That wouldn't fly in Texas!
Virginia also
Nick Bullard Tennessee doesn't care
I know. u can't use white bass here
It's ok to break laws with the texas game wardens they get on me for putting tag over tag on the boat hull
A second stationary camera on the rods, please. Watching the takedown on the rods is more fun than watching you guys reeling them in. Plus, your constant moving body-cam gets old.
Are you gonna announce a winner for the rod fro. Cats and carp
Yes. Winner will be announced in Thursday's vid.
Oh Dad...Y'all need a good steel wedge like the mountain climbers use on that wall crack...Fun times...
Thanks for watching, Mike! Oh Dad!
if u gut hook a catfish you arent suppose to leave the hook in his belly , stick youre hand in there and dig it out . if you dont know how to pull a hook out then go check out Luke with Catfish & carp
Says you what you said is personal opinion an supports no real facts troll
Try that with a 50lb flathead wannabe Einstein
@@ectorreza6015 so you are saying that its better to leave a sharp piece of metal in his guts then it is to dig it out?You must be really smart. He should have killed that fish right away instead of letting it go like that. Its going to die anyway with that hook in his guts. That hook would have came out rather easy with some patience,i had hundreds of those happen to me and i managed to get the hook out most of the time without hurting the fish.
@@gumelini1 thanks I appreciate the compliment and yea it is in some cases ive caught thousands of fish that have Been hooked before and I've caught fish that have a hook coming out of its ass so there's many perspectives ultimately it's up to the person fishing not the person in the comment section crying if the fish can eat and pass the hook why make a stink about it I believe your wrong you believe I'm wrong does this mean we ain't friends anymore Hahaha go ahead and type me another message you must believe what you say means something to me it don't so good day
@@ectorreza6015 if it meant nothing then why would you reply?Let me give you some FACTS,not opinions. For a fact a sharp piece of metal in your guts is not really good for your health. Is it?Only a person with an IQ lower then 30 would fail to understand that.Im sorry for you!
You should try rainbow trout for bait and put the white bass fillets on a sandwich with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and mayo!
Never tried trout for catfish bait. I've heard some people using it to catch some big flatheads.
I don't know if you guys have ever caught yellow bass before or not but those look a lot like yellow bass and as far as I know they are not regulated in any state. Yellow bass and white bass look very very similar in many many ways and in crisp clean water yellow bass aren't as golden looking closer to a white bass. Also white bass don't have broken up linear lines like a yellow bass.. I agree with checking in with the local dnr on regulations anywhere you are going to use live bait and what kinds you can use
Dude shut up. I'm sick of negative comments. Those are white fucking bass. Shut up and fish Jesus he puts out videos for our entertainment and your being an unsigned critic
James Joyner the belly on that thing has no tint of yellew you panzy
Martin Jones oh CZcams monitor
Do the 4-7# make for good eating?
Yes.
if ever get the chance cook up some white bass they are very tasty
I get nervous just watching videos of people fishing that hole lol!!!
I don’t know bout other states but in texas we cant get within about 1000 feet of a dam. Rules changed after 9-11 and it made us have to work for our catfish
Yeah, a lot of states have that rule/policy.
Hope you have a great year of fishing!
Need some climbing anchors for rock climbing, for that crack in the wall.
Yep, for sure!
What works best for catfish spoiled dead bait or live bait?
A very nice Person live or fresh cut bait
Taylor Delk ty
What kind of rods and reels are you using?
We were using B'n"M Silver Cat Magnum rods with Okuma Classic XT reels
A guy in my area caught a 20lb channel cat
That's a tank!!!
@@ChattCats thats a snack for a flathead!
Yall should give those climbing anchors a try instead of a piece of wood might be a good investment for that type of fishing.
Good point!
You say your name is Ty konkel well do you know any Donald conkles or any conkle's in West Virginia
I want a wbite bass for my tank
Awesome man! Keep it up!
Thanks, Eathan!
Better male sure you can use game fish as bait. Vant in Cali. Just looking out for you man.
Question is whitebass legal to use as bait in 2019?
Yes.
That was a hybrid. Not a white bass. Lines were broken. White bass lines are straight and fade out.
U better go hide all the way people are tellin on you guy's. I just figured you guys worked there and you were just checking out the depth of the water 🤣😎
14:43 haha that voice crack
I thought you can't use game fish for bait? Nice video btw and thanks for sharing.
You can in the state of TN. Check this article out: www.tnfish.org/FrequentlyAskedQuestionsFAQ_TWRA/FrequentlyAskedQuestions_TWRA.htm#Gamefish
Thanks for watching!
What kind of rod and reel is that @ chatts and cats
I used three different kinds in this video. Which time marker are you referring to?
what type of reel is that in the beginning?
www.bnmpoles.com/collections/duck-commander/products/dcy
Is alright to leave hooks in fish like that?
If gut hooked yes
Take and get a couple pieces of all thread about 3/8 diameter bend an eye on one end and just screw them in the crack , want hurt a thing , then un screw when your done ✔
I need to get me one of those heavy duty rod and reels. Ive only fished with a bass fishing rod and 10lb test my entire life and only go for cats but ive had good success with it and landed up to 70lb cats with only one brokne rod ever.
It's all about how you fight the fish. I typically free-line for catfish with medium action ugly stik rod/reel combo spooled with 10 lb line...super fun!
That is a yellow bass not white bass....and if your in the state of Tennessee it is illegal by the way white bass have straight non broken lines on the side and one line is very distinguished down the side
It's a white bass.
What year and model boat do you got here
It's a center console Bayhawk. Not sure on the year...
What kind of reels are you using?
Okuma Classic XT reels
Where did you get you triggerspin fishing pole?
It was not mine. But you can get one here: www.bnmpoles.com/c-46-duck-commander.aspx

Thanks, Derrek! Tight lines!
What is that reel he is using at the start?
B'n'M duck commander reel
Is that legal anchoring to that dam?
Yes as far as I know.
I put 4 dozen 3 to 4 inch minnows in my 3 acrer Lake for feeding
Cool!
Chatt Cats Fishing. I have 2 white bass that 2 Inchest longer per month they were 9 Inchest when I frist put them in thiere now thiere 13 14 inch monsters because I put 14 DOZEN 3 4 to nearly 5 inch hybrid shinhiers in thiere
Yer right...Lol!
State law requires life vest after be past a certain point around dams. I’m pretty sure you aren’t allowed to tie off . Some guide service
We were wearing the manual inflatable belt pack life jacket. Those have to be worn at all times.
There was no sign about not tying off. Been doing it for years now.
Even though the signs say Keep Out, you see fishermen attach their boat back in the holes over the current flow. Just don’t fall out ou boat and wear a life vest. 250 fine will remind you
Read my other comment. We are both wearing PFD's...
Probably one deep ass dam...good fishing guys
Thanks for watching!
From my experience if you catching 5# flats the big boys are not any where around or at least not feeding. A 50# will eat that 5# with out a second thought. I met a guy years ago that didn’t mess with bait smaller than a pound and his favorite bait was 2 pound bullhead and he would put that bait right where it was the most turbulent water. Seen a fish take that bull head and in no more than a second that monster bullhead was go. And he had missed his bite. Catching more fish is a lot of fun though
