Catching Flathead Catfish On LIVE White Bass In VIOLENT Waters!

  • The original plan was to catch skipjack, but there was no skipjack to be found. We switched to plan b, which was to catch live bluegill and go for flatheads. We anchored up on the wing wall and caught 7-8 flatheads and 2 channels. I caught a white bass and we used it as live bait--it worked! We caught a 10 lb flathead. White bass makes a great live bait. Be sure to check your state's regulations regarding live bait before trying it.

Be sure to check your state's regulations on using white bass and other game fish as bait. In Tennessee white bass and game fish are legal to use as bait, provided they were legally harvested. For clarification, read here: www.tnfish.org/FrequentlyAskedQuestionsFAQ_TWRA/FrequentlyAskedQuestions_TWRA.htm#Gamefish

Loads of fun.Trying to get good bait is sometimes harder than catching a trophy cat,but that's what it takes to be successful.2 weeks ago I landed a 47 pound blue on a large white bass below Chickamauga dam and several more on cut white bass filletes .

There's a dam in Oklahoma that me and my dad fished our whole lives. There's a concrete walkway on the bank with railings where everybody would fish right up against the dam. But recently, they put up a damn fence that keeps people out, and they painted a line on the bank to signify that you can't cross it with your boat.. Pisses me off. Fish there all those years, and they randomly decide to regulate and protect that place like it's a damn military base.

Just a thought on safety there with your anchor system to the wall. Instead of using a piece of wood to jam into the wall. How about getting some climbing anchors they will grip a lot better and stay secure.

They have special hookups used for rock climbing that would work great in those crevices to hold your boat more securely. The more pressure added, the tighter they grip. Not sure what they are called. Got 2 rollers with teeth on them that expand under pressure. See them used in a lot of mountain climbing vids.

You guys in Tennessee must have very lax state regulations. Here in Maryland, if you get anywhere closer than 400 yards of a major dam they will send in the police to arrest you! And no way in hell would they let you tie your boat to the wall of a dam! I don't know if you guys have ever caught yellow bass before or not but those look a lot like yellow bass and as far as I know they are not regulated in any state. Yellow bass and white bass look very very similar in many many ways and in crisp clean water yellow bass aren't as golden looking closer to a white bass. Also white bass don't have broken up linear lines like a yellow bass.. I agree with checking in with the local dnr on regulations anywhere you are going to use live bait and what kinds you can use

From my experience if you catching 5# flats the big boys are not any where around or at least not feeding. A 50# will eat that 5# with out a second thought. I met a guy years ago that didn’t mess with bait smaller than a pound and his favorite bait was 2 pound bullhead and he would put that bait right where it was the most turbulent water. Seen a fish take that bull head and in no more than a second that monster bullhead was go. And he had missed his bite. Catching more fish is a lot of fun though
