My 1972 VAZ 2101 is my daily driver. I modified a few safety related items (like automatic seat belts, electric windshield washer pump), but the rest is original. I did swap in a 5-speed transmission from a newer version. I can confirm the handling. It is loud, so I will add some noise reduction mats later.

Long time ago I bought an old Lada. An older Model like that. I have to say, I was very pleased with it. It did the Job, was reasonably comfortable and reliable. Only the big Rost issue and the TÜV parted us.

The fiat on which this car is based was one if not the best (in it's class) handling car of it's day. Your handling issues are very fixable, some maintainance and some mods. But lowering it you might be able to fix some or most of the issues. The engine is also fixable with maintaince (yes might be hone or rebore)..... Oh parts , chase origional Fiat parts.

I installed a single-point injection from Golf 3 instead of a carburetor on the engine. from the engine 1.4. power and efficiency finally appeared in this car :) I move on it several times a month and am satisfied! Russian here.
In our country 2106 (I'll refer to it as "shesterka" (six in Russian)) is somewhere between rare and common. At one hand VAZ models like 05, 06, 07 are considered to be the best cars for beginners because of cheap parts and easy to maintain. Also, if you got into accident, you can replace any part and get it back together. In fact, those cars are so cheap here, that some people are even buying two of those - one to use, another - for parts. You can buy this car here for 30000 RUB minimum in bad condition or unregistered. For the working, registered car it is 60000 RUB average. And if it was made back in Soviet era and still in perfect condition - price may reach up to 150000 RUB. Ladas made in Russian Federation are usually less worth.
Yes, handling here is quite a challenge, but as we say here - "if you learn to drive Lada, you can drive anything".

Buying spare parts at the right price is not a problem. If you live near Kaliningrad or Belarus.
If it is difficult for you to get there, there are acquaintances from Slovakia or the Czech Republic, you can order delivery by mail there.
At this time, I do not recommend Germany, delivery is now 2 times more expensive.
But the most ideal option is to buy in Kaliningrad or Belarus,
    any parts for ridiculous money.

I had several Ladas including a couple of Nivas. Excellent service from all of them and the 1600 5-speed Riva is like a poor person's Volvo. A Taxi firm around her used them for years and would get 300.000 miles out of them with regular servicing and maintenance. They were exhausted by then though, but the owner, would always go and buy another. They were always a lot better than the FSO that looked similar but had poor quality engines, bodies that dissolved and disc-brake callipers that seized really quickly.

I have a 2101 as a daily driver, only modification neccesary is an alternative spark thingy, like an electrical one. Because The pincers that give The spark are a pain because those need adjusting and replacement very often.
I have driven The car for 3 years now and it hasn't required any complicated work, I changed The shocks in The front, but that is really it.
Then just have painted it a bit since IT has been in daily use for ovet 30 years now and stood outside in harsh conditions.
I have made multiple trips of constant driving varying from 100 to 250km and haven't been happier. You feel very close and personal with things around you.
My only complaint is that I have had to drive windows open because it was getting too hot. It was -28°C outside and +28 inside The car while Windows open on a highway. 😆
As this man said it is not for everyone, you really have to want a car with the least useless junk to want a Lada. As I do.

To be honest, I'd not buy this car)) Ladas mostly are in very bad condition, engines aren't powerful enough. As for me they're good for building a cheap drift car (we call them "korch" xD). I have two cars, Passat B8 and grandfather's Lada 2109 1.5i 2005 (got lots of memories with it from my childhood). I use my "Devyatka" only for not very extremal off-road near villages and when I want to go camping somewhere in Carpathians. But now (because of war) I drive it more because it can use not only petrol, there's a tank for LPG which is cheaper. I'm very lucky that body and engine condition are very good (mileage is less than 90k km). The car isn't so wide and long as my Passat, so it feels comfortable sometimes on the road or parkings. The lack of noise insulation gives you a full sense of the car, how each part of it works. But c'mon, it is a little inconvenient to ride it every day. It is better to leave it as an exhibit))). I understand that cars like this are a bit exotic for you, but they're all trash xD.

Have owned 3 ladas, one from year 1996 was not so good. It had General motors one point injection from factory to meet up some EURO standards, and it was thrown in there with orginal russian electrics.. Welp it didnt work so well most of time. So i sold it and bought 1989 year kopeyka (VAZ-2101) and drove it whole summer with no problems what so ever!

Samara is a model line which includes several models. old OG ones were 21099 as sedans and 2108/2109 as hatchbacks (3- and 5-doors respectively). There were other models later after the USSR collapse and I assume they didn't get that popular.
