  • Tool-free playthrough ended with 57 lives and 509 diamonds, no autofire. Collected all extra lives not including one in Metal Stars level which can only be collected by correctly executed special attack move as demonstated by ScHlAuChi for Amiga version. It's actually easy to get, I just messed it up in this play. I could improve on most of the levels, but it's really boring to replay early levels while trying to make a perfect run.
    PC DOS version was released in 1995, four years after the orignal. Graphics were modified a lot, but level design and music are mostly faithful. Gameplay is slightly different when compared with the Amiga version, for example (in addition to more difficult Powerslide level) some traditional boss tactics don't work. I don't like new boss designs much and Turrican looks more like a toy solder than a bionic death machine, but level graphics look nice imo. For example it's easier to spot secret rooms in The Wall and Walker Factory levels. Turrican 1 and 3 were not released for PC.
    Unfortunately I couldn't get SB16 emulation working with this game so sampling rate is not as good as it could be :-(

The ending animation looks amazing as well, kind of a shame this version isn't available in the Turrican Anthology release. God like run btw.

      @@Elbas_Tardo yeah, but you have to keep in mind that by the late 80s, there were PCs that easily outperformed even the best of Amigas, albeit at a massive cost. You guys need to realize that here in the USA, the IBM compatible did relatively well in the higher end of the gaming spectrum, and by the early 90s, the PC had mostly cought up with the Amiga in terms of gaming prowess. And as you can see, most DOS games from the mid 90s looked like HD remakes in comparison. As this point, proprietary platforms like the Amiga were beginning to lose the gaming race with the PCs and 16-bit consoles. DOOM, and to a lesser extent, Wolfenstein 3D, really showed what the PC could do, and Windows 95 changed the PC landscape, as well as establish the PC as the truly dominant platform for nearly all things. I'm sorry, but that's just the sad truth.

    The DOS version is the best and most impressive port of the Amiga original. The one on the Amiga will always be my favorite but If they hadn't taken certain artistic liberties on the PC, there is a good chance the DOS version would have been the best version of the game on any system.

      I originally thought that too at first (except main player sprite, looks butt ugly on PC version) but after closer inspection there's many details missing in the PC version.
      The extra colours are nice but only for the first levels, after that it gets a bit drab looking, the shoot 'em up levels look horrid imo. There's missing background effects, scrollings and some parallax here and there throughout the game.
      There's an Amiga 1200 version in the works now that's using the graphics from this PC version plus you can choose to use the Amiga player sprite, I hope they fix all the missing details too, it should become the definitive version.

    • @LondenTower
      @LondenTower Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@rafaellima83I think you're right that those music files are basically the same, but.
      I does sound like the PC/DOS release has better stereo panning going on. (Supposedly, this is because the amiga version of this game does use the TFMX sound driver that allows for 8 channels instead of the regular 4. But because the paula chip can only do 2 channels on the left and the remaining 2 on the right, that causes most of the panning to be on the left. The PC/DOS port is mostly unaffected by it, cause panning can be done individually. And with a Gravis Ultrasound, it's all done on the Sound cards internal RAM and hardware mixer.)

    The levels design also was really good. I quite liked this game. The mini subgame of not picking up the wrong weapons and well as all the extra life and secrets was good. I never understod the sawblade mecanic. It is good. But it mostly feels like a Metroyd copy.

    I think now, this game (both on Amiga or other systems) had a serious problem (and that's why I could never enjoy them). The threshold line where the player makes the screen start scrolling is over half the center and at the side of the direction of movement. This means, if you move to the right, the player will fixate closer to the right border, thus following onto enemies before you have the chance to see them and avoid them. It makes me fall into enemies or projectiles too frequently, without having the time to avoid them, also dreading to move towards any direction.

      This is true and jumping was annoying. But there’s easy thing to get in levels and it’s simply to move bit by bit forwards, including jumping. That way you’ll get less enemies towards you. Also using that wheel mode makes you invincible,which is crucial. If you look closely this small movement is used even in this run.

      Not sure, but I believe this got only a minor release in Germany and I doubt it sold very well. It came out way too late.

      @@einokeino303 I owned it and completed it on Amiga and I also played the PC version when it came out, I must say I couldn't belive what I was playing... to me it was way better than the Amiga version and also one of the very few games that achieved that.

      I did. I got it as a full version from the magazine PC Games. I didn't know about Amiga at that time only the PC that my father had. I was hooked from that point on. As a child the game was fascinating, but too hard, so I had to come back years later to finish the game to see the end. Now that there are longplays on youtube seeing the ending of a game became way too easy, but that is probably something that won't change anymore.

      I played this on the PC when it came out. When my Amiga loving brother saw me playing it, he threw his Amiga in the dustbin and got himself a PC.

    It's a nice version for the PC but the Amiga version is still the best. I prefer the Amiga graphics. The sound effects in the Amiga version were less often missed, as there were Paula and the four digital channels in the hardware. Watching this, I realized the gameplay is too easy with the unlimited wheel use. I think in the predecessor was limited.

    Wie die Leute wohl geguckt haben müssen, die Turrican 2 zum ersten Mal spielten, und plötzlich verwandelt sich das Männchen in ein Raumschiff, und das Spiel sieht plötzlich aus wie R-Type oder Katakis.

    Holy crap the character art in the intro is ugly. o.o; I mean the Amiga art was pretty jank to begin with but this is a whole new level of grotesque misshapen people. =o
    But yeah, 1993-1995 were the years that showed that sheer CPU power could do good 2D games. It's sad that C= thought that 68EC020/14 was sufficient for a base model.

    • @HarikenRed1
      @HarikenRed1 Před 5 lety +1

      Absolutely, the character is really awful.
      About the 68020, when you think that this CPU has been released 10 years before the AGA machines (1984), it was already at the end of its life. And the chipset was only a small upgrade of the OCS developped in 1984 as well.
      This was typical Commodore, having great engineers and technical ideas, but terrible management making cheap horrible choices. What a pity.

      There you go, Commodore, exactly what you needed in those tough times.

      @@camulodunon Exactly, those specs would have been a right compromise!
      But nooo, Commodore preferred to release a half baked thing.
      I can remember when I sold my A2000 to buy an A1200, excited to think that I will have a Workbench mith more than 4 colors in HiRes. And the reality came at the first power up, I cringed as it was so slow with only 16 colors.
      I loved my A2000, I never liked my A1200 😔

    Levels are the same but graphics are completely new. Very impressive port. Or remake and Chris Hülsbeck's music needs no work on it. It is perfect.
