  • www.ultralightflyer.com - Kasperwing flying wing, Kasperwing weight shift ultralight aircraft, Witold Kasper. The Ultralight Flyer talks to owner, builder and pilot of a Kasperwing flying wing, weight shift ultralight aircraft.
The Kasperwing is a single-seat, single-engine, high-wing monoplane with hybrid control. Wing has swept back leading and trailing edges, and constant chord; no tail.
Pitch control by weight-shift; yaw/roll control by tip rudders; control inputs through tiller for yaw.
Wing braced from above by kingpost and cables, from below by cables; wing profile by W. Kasper; single-surface.
Undercarriage has three wheels in tricycle formation; no suspension on any wheels. Push-right to-left nosewheel steering independent from yaw control.
Aluminium-tube framework with optional pod. Engine mounted below wing driving pusher propeller. Dacron used for covering wing and underside of mid-chord spar.
The Kasperwing 1-80 was designed by W. Kasper in collaboration with Steve Grossruck and the prototype constructed in 1976.
The Kasper effect allows the 1-80 to make vertical approach to landing while remaining stable in all three axes during a descent at 160ft/min. with a 154 lb. pilot. It has a twin spar wing, each wing having six ribs folded into a flattened 'S' shape to give a stable profile.
The Kasper can be summarized as twin rudders carried on tripod struts at the extremity of each wing in such a way that the rudders are also used as vortex generators and as air brakes.

Thanks, Chuckie! Steve Pinkham's K-wing was a treasure!!.. so sad that both he and it are no longer with us.. Glad I was fortunate enough to see it and talk with him at OshKosh, back in the day. The black & yellow K-wing is James Jager, of J-bird Engines.. he successfully implemented many excellent mods too .. Thanks for sharing this little slice of UL heritage!! ;)

The very first Kasperwing ultralight and hang glider were built by Don Matson with the assistance of Witold Kasper. Steve Grossruck with Kasper's assistance then built upon Don's early work with multiple improvements, Steve's company Cascade Ultralights produced 333 of the Kasperwing 180 ultralights mostly the standard 180 model, a limited number of 3-axsis and 3-axis 2 place planes were also produced.
The KW 180 does not have a conventional stall break, it can however be stalled if forced (whip stalled), in normal operation when power is reduced, the nose held above the glide angle the plane will slow until zero forward airspeed and then enter a stable "mush". Full control of the aircraft can be maintained in the mush because of the unique wingtips control system, the aircraft has no tendency to drop a wing and will not stall-spin like a conventional airplane. The KW 180 has excellent STOL characteristics and has maintained an excellent safety record, possibly the best of all ultralight aircraft ever produced.
Most importantly the KW180 is good wind in the teeth flying, if you want to go faster than the law allows look elsewhere.

what happened to the original that was to be a fill sized airplane, not an ultralight?
