  • Just a quick demonstration of using the WEN 40v chainsaw (Model # 40417). I did not find a whole lot online before I purchased this except for seven or so, 5-Star reviews. I also gave it a 5-star review. So far, I am quite happy.

I been looking at 40V chain saws. I go camping this year and thought about buying one. I was going to own three batteries if needed. I own other chains saws and still use my gasoline. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing, Mike! Could you answer a couple questions for me?
    1) How likely is it to spill its oil if stored upright vs. on its side?
    2) Is there a safety lockout (other than chain brake)? The comparable Ryobi allows reverse-insertion of the battery for example.
    Thanks again!

Basically, the oil cap has a breather hole in it. So if it is stored such that the oil is not touching the cap, it will not spill. If the oil is touching the cap, it will leak out the breather hole (very slowly). Upright and on it side both will not leak (well, cap side down would leak). Safety lockout... Hmm I do not believe it has a lockout other than the chain break. However, the battery can only be put in one way, so that is good. The chain break should always be engaged when the saw is not running - good practice for all chainsaws. I am very happy with this saw. One small complaint is that the charger's green light is not consistent when charging. However, the battery is being charged - takes about 4 hours from drained to full.

i dont really understand the chain brake for a electric chainsaw as the saw immediately stops when you cut off the power. A gas chainsaw does not and that's why the brake is needed. My only reasoning for the brake for electric is for people who are accustomed to both types of saws. it's good practice to engage the brake as you may forget what type of saw you are currently operating.

@Michael Myers i know how to use them. I am stating that a gas and electric chainsaws are different when stopping. My gas saw chain still travels when i cut the gas. My electric (battery) saw stops immediately. So there is no point in a brake for electric from my experience. So i am saying having a hand brake is really aesthetic for electruc but may be a good idea for safety when going from electric to gas.

@Michael Myers When i was young and this is based on a gas saw. I was instructed when cutting limbs, the saw would pass through the timber and naturally move towards the operator while the chain is still spinning. So I let off the gas and applied the brake once the limb was cut. I have never heard of falling safety theory. Well you learn something new.
