- In this video we explore the great city of Gdańsk in Poland. Join us as we take a walk through the old town.
Gdańsk, often referred to by its German name "Danzig," is a historic port city located on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Poland. It is one of the major cities in the Pomeranian Voivodeship and is part of the Tricity metropolitan area along with Gdynia and Sopot. Gdańsk holds significant historical, cultural, and economic importance and has a rich and complex history.
Key aspects of Gdańsk include:
Historical Significance: Gdańsk has a long and diverse history, with influences from Polish, German, and other European cultures. The city was a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading network in the Middle Ages. It was also the site of the start of World War II, when German forces attacked the Polish garrison at Westerplatte in 1939.
Architecture: The city boasts a mix of architectural styles due to its history and various influences. You'll find Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo buildings, as well as more modern architecture. The Old Town of Gdańsk is particularly well-preserved and features colorful facades, charming cobblestone streets, and iconic landmarks like the Neptune Fountain.
Monuments and Landmarks: Several notable landmarks are scattered throughout the city. The Gdańsk Crane (Żuraw Gdański) is a medieval crane that once played a crucial role in the city's shipping industry. The Amber Museum, located within the Gothic-style Prison Tower, showcases the history and significance of amber in the region. St. Mary's Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world, is another prominent landmark.
Solidarity Movement: Gdańsk was a crucial site for the Solidarity movement, a trade union and social movement that played a pivotal role in challenging the communist regime in Poland. The movement was led by Lech Wałęsa, who later became the President of Poland.
Economy and Trade: The city's strategic location on the Baltic Sea has historically made it an important trading center. Even today, Gdańsk remains a key port for Poland's maritime trade and industry.
Cultural Events: Gdańsk hosts various cultural events, festivals, and exhibitions throughout the year. These events celebrate the city's history, art, music, and maritime heritage.
Tourism: The city's rich history, picturesque architecture, and Baltic Sea location make it a popular tourist destination. Visitors often explore the Old Town, walk along the Long Market (Długi Targ), and enjoy the views from Gdańsk's waterfront.
Overall, Gdańsk is a city that beautifully blends its historical heritage with modern life. It offers a glimpse into the past while embracing contemporary culture and economic activities. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply enjoying a stroll along the Baltic coast, Gdańsk has much to offer.

The church is St Marys. It's huuuuuuuuuuuge. Not sure if I was able to capture that. The kids did amazing walking all the stairs! Although I think they were feeling it by the afternoon. There's so much to do there, we had a lot of fun.

Greetings! Yes, she lived there as a child and spent time between Poland and Germany growing up. Thanks for watching!
God help me I travel to Poland in Gdansk
Good luck! It's beautiful there
Indeed particularly Gdansk and Krakow are my favourite city to vist but still stranded here with the polish visa from Nairobi at the polish Embassy.!!!!
Oh no, that sounds awful. I wish you luck thing will work out soon and you can continue onward.
The tall building with the tower is not a church, it's the Town Hall. You were standing in front of it and failed to realise that? 😂
I guess so? 😄
Poland? Thought she was from Germany 😮
She was born in Germany but her family is from Poland 👍🏻
Why don't children speak Polish with their moms? It is sad that a Polish woman does not teach her children to speak Polish. Such an opportunity for children to learn Polish naturally and you do not give your children this gift.
I am watching on YT a Polish man who married a Filipina - their daughter is 3 years old and trilingual. And you do not teach your children the mother's language, which is very difficult to learn at a later age (Polish is one of the most difficult languages in the world). It's a shame.
Fair point, but they are learning. Thanks for watching.
Definitely not true. I am Polish living in the UK with a French husband. My children do speak Polish on almost native level. I have put so much work into it(Saturday Polish School, Polish books, cartoos, movies etc), but it paid off. All of our Polish friend's children speak Polish too.😊
That's great! Definitely a lot of work. How old are your kiddos? Saturday Polish School sounds interesting 👍🏻 Thank you for watching!
@@OurTinyAdventure they are 15 and 8 now. We just came back from Poland where they could easily communicate with all the family members and friends. I have been using opol method which means one person, one language. I always speak Polish to them, it does not matter if we are in hospital, shops etc. Of course they are exemptions like their English/English only speaking friends, teachers, school in general. I could honestly not imagine not to be able to speak my mother language with them.
So many other benefits, just to mention few, free Universities in Poland, job opportunities etc
Good luck guys, keeping my fingers crossed for you 🤞
That's awesome. Thank you so much!
