Cameron Underwood Interview - Face Tranplant Patient

- NYU Langone Health patient and myFace Star, Cameron, had a face transplant in January, under the leadership of Dr. Eduardo D Rodriguez, MD, DDS.
myFace supported Cameron throughout this journey by providing travel and housing for his many trips back and forth between CA and NYC and more than 150 nights of free housing for him and his family while on extensive stays in NYC for pre-surgery, surgery, recovery and follow-up. myFace also supported his rehabilitation, including speech therapy, orthodontics treatment, nutrition counseling and psychological support services.
Cameron and his brother Aaron, shared some of their experiences and what myFace meant to them.

Yeah kiss my ass a second chance. Just look at the way he talks and blinks his eye. Nothing can replace your features. Beside, he has to take Anti-rejection drugs for the rest of his life which leads to infections and other complications. I don't know it's not my business and I don't know what he has been through if it's really worth it. If I ever decide to commit suicide, I would make sure that I don't come back cause in that case, death is way better than living
He actually looks almost just as he did it is incredible how Dr's come along to improve a person quality of life

Cameron is a very very brave man and if he feels better and happier and his quality of life is better then that,s what matters! I take my hat of to u Cameron for all you have been through and for how brave and strong you have been!

Happy for you! As time goes on, will your facial muscles get stronger, allowing your speech to get stronger? Just curious. I have no problem understanding a word you’re saying; but it would be great to gain unlimtrd improvement. Have an awesome life and feel the love out here for you!
Yess it does. He’s doing even better now and in due time it will fully regain function and expression. It can take years for even the swelling to fully go down
Depends. The nerves have to be properly connected up by the Drs and his body has to figure out how to strengthen those new nerve connections up- though nerves are very hard to regrow. He may not gain full movement.
what everyone else is saying but also, he was used to speaking with his deformed face for 2 years, he had to relearn how to talk with an average face

Dude had his face blown off. Had one of the most complicated and risky surgeries imaginable with a face transplant and he came out more handsome than I ever was. I want a face transplant too.

Can someone educate me as to why he speaks like that? Like it looks like he doesn't have much autonomy or control over his facial muscles.
?? Because he has foreign tissue attached to his face? Do u really think they can match every single nerve in his face to the donor tissue? These never work, tissue always get rejected, they can only slow it down and the life expectancy is really bad, 10 years or so. These stories make the public go "wow" but try to get an update after 5 years... you will find none until the obituary eventually pops up.

Some people lose all or part of their tongue when they lose their face. That will impact speech even with a transplant. Cameron's tongue remained intact, though. I'm sure he'll have speech therapy in the future.
Probably partly damaged nerves because of the suicide attempt and also the limited control over the face transplant.
