Is modding really worthwhile? Do you know if the mod you paid for is installed correctly & works OK?

  • Well, you paid for the mod and you can hear the difference so it must have been worthwhile. But what if it is not?
    Like in this case.
Whereas PSU filtering cannot hurt, does fitting an aftermarket clock really makes any difference, particularly in an upmarket player, where the designers already must have paid some attention to it?
I do not think in this case it did. Soldering was pretty average if not amateurish, and the clock needed 10 minutes to get to the right frequency.
After that, it was drifting up and down just like the factory one does.
All within specifications, but why bother if it is not significantly better?

The argument often goes like this: it must sound better, because it measures better, or it does sound better, despite not measuring any better.

This is not the case here. If you replace all the good quality capacitors in a decently designed and build unit with Black Gates, there is no way to measure the impact and one could debate if it was worthwhile or not.
Reason to replace original clock with one of greater stability, is just that - to give the unit a better clock with greater stability. This one, is no more stable that ordinary PLL in any budget unit.
I have seen some after-market clocks that were rock solid and would not deviate even a single Hertz from the frequency they were set to.
Not a case here. In this case, we can be 100% sure that it was a waste of money.

@@hear-net-auJust a nod to the simplifed bone of contention between the two irreconcilable camps at opposite sides of the debate. Just as often, one comes ax good designs, spoiled by the accounts department, as well as poor ones with an excellent marketing strategy.

@@paulb4661 the design here is not necessarily bad. It could be that implementation was. You never know if the person doing it isn't just a hobbyist without basic test instruments. He wouldn't know if his MOD was successful or not, having no means to do a check.

@@paulb4661 Too true. Too many examples of this. In technical world, Sony has often come up with superior product and superior engineering. They thought that that alone would guarantee market success. However superior or maybe overwhelming marketing from others, made Sony fail.
In similar fashion dyson vaccum cleaners hardly pick up any dirt, yet they are very successful. Same with Apple products. I know at least 200 electronics and communication / computer engineers and technicians. Only 3 ever had their products. Two of them no longer do and I lost touch with the third.

    How about phase noise measurement?

    • @hear-net-au
      @hear-net-au  Před 3 měsíci

      What about it?
It is like arguing whether filling your car tyres with just nitrogen is beneficial.
In case where pressure should be set to 30 psi and you find 17, 22, 34 and 37psi (these are real figures I had in my tyres after I picked up a brand new car from a dealer in the late 80s), it becomes irrelevant what kind of gas is in them. Car would handle in a inferior manner to one filled with correct 30psi pressure of normal air. No point for further debate.
Here too. With the clock wildly fluctuating in this player, any further measurements are pointless.

@@hear-net-au Probably this modded clock was not good. Lower phase noise = better sound. But sound of clocks really matter. I listened to two USB cards outputting signal to USB dac. One card has Crystek CCHD-957 femto clock, other card has big hot running OCXO module. OCXO was significantly better by large margin. Now I want to put such OCXO in my CD transport.

@@zigismunds7465 before you put it in, check if it works. Measure it's frequency with decent frequency counter and see if it is stable.
