Gecko Quantum, Firefox’s web engine powered by rust, is way better than chromium because it combines the best things from all the major web browser’s engines and puts it into one- with the web engine features of: parallelism(from servo), The rule tree(from firefox) and The Style-Sharing cache(from Chrome and Safari). *P.P.S.* :
      - *Pale Moon* is Not Gecko-based anymore either... - I think it's called "Goanna" now (?)...
They just (also) made a "base" for other "XUL Applications" (Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, etc.) to be based on, besides their own Browser (that's also a XUL Application)...
"Basilisk" is also made by them and is a somewhat feature incomplete browser when compared to Pale Moon (though it is compatible with webextensions, IIRC) that's there mainly to test Developments and New Features and Stability of said "Goanna" Engine...
Many People have been contributing Code to them Lately, to keep Gecko (similar/compatible enough) alive instead of having to restart development almost from Scratch into a Rust based Quantum engine...
      Bye then.

In my opinion the reason microsoft is launching their own extension store:
    1. with their own store they can feature their own extensions above others
    2. there are certain extensions google doesn't allow on their store (for example a youtube downloader); its possible that Microsoft intends to have a different set of regulations governing what they think should be allowed.
    3. if google wanted they could make the google webstore 'block' all request from the edge browser. (something to cause microsoft grief)

Just a note that the edge:// prefix is set *alongside* the chrome:// prefix so you could go to chrome://flags on edge and it'll redirect. Afaik this is a chromium feature as the chrome:// prefix is available on Brave as well.

You tried very hard not to say "Firefox" and "Safari". Me, personally, I preferred Firefox until the Quantum version. That broke nearly all my extensions, including my password manager. That was unacceptable so I went to using Chrome as my primary browser. I've been giving Edge Chromium a try. It's not ready for prime time yet but it works well most of the time.

Regarding the rollout roadmap, I think the browser is mature enough so that during this summer we will have the option to download the complete browser optionally, and by the fall update it will be mandatorily included with Windows, but the user will always have the choice to maintain the old Edge or even Explorer (maybe there are still brave men out there...) as the default browser if they have it already installed, only new PCs will have to use only the new Edge or any other third party browser ;-D

Edge have a serious flaw: it doesn't support different languages from the system for orthography correction. So it's basically useless as a browser because most of the world speak two languages and need to make corrections in two languages at the same time, something only Chrome can do. So it's not even a fight, only Chrome has this feature in the whole world. Make Edge work with two dictionaries at the same time with the language of our choice, and I would easily use it. All browsers are almost the same nowadays, the way Google Chrome handles language is really what makes the difference. When I install it, it already come with Portuguese and English turned on, and this makes my life easier.

Google just keeps making Chromium worse and worse, and all of the other browsers inherit its problems. 😒 Firefox isn't perfect, but it's much less trash. Also, if Chromium isn't Chrome, then why does it default to Google for everything and ask for a Google login and warn of reduced functionality without Google API keys? ¬_¬

Tried both on an Intel Atom tablet (scrolling performance is not as good as old edge but everything else is really freaking smooth and fast, compared to, well.. the laggy unusable mess that is Chrome or the old Edge that doesn't play videos correctly and keeps crashing constantly) And on a relatively new i5 laptop (Runs great, and again I've had zero crashes on the New Edge compared to the old one which crashed many times every day)

I have nothing against Google, but hope competition will make everyone better. Used to be I thought every up-to-date browser should be able to run any "normal" web page. Still do, and generally think "If your web page does not run in my browser, "I save money." Like a store - don't take my credit card or don't carry the brand I like - "I save money." I like NoScript, and as far as I know, neither Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome support an equivalent extension.

Firefox’s Gecko Quantum Engine = Gecko(firefox) + Servo + Chromium + most concurrent programming language rust. Firefox has unmatched web redering with this engine. It has been taking steps towards compatability from chrome, as chrome copies old design’s and code they get rid of, for example the new chrome 70 UI was a copy of firefox’s old UI with their own spin.
