This is kind of an unorganized rant about why I preferred the "dark era" of Sonic the Hedgehog. What are your thoughts on this era?

I’m of the mind that while Sonic is definitely supposed to be children’s media, it works best with a weighty story. But lot of people, especially Sega, have a difficult time distinguishing serious from edgy. It’s entirely possible to have a story with clear and present danger without being dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy.
I miss the days of dark and edgy Sonic games too.
I also miss when Sonic was dark back in that era...💙

Even the Meta Era? That was the biggest Dark Age in all of Sonic…(also would be a pretty hot take).

1998-2008 is my favorite sonic era(s)
The era I was supposed to grow up with I’ve never really liked and I’ve always gravitated to the darker storylines and gameplay of sonic (my favorite game has always been SA2 and my favorite character is shadow)

See, Rayman always knew what it wanted to be, a wack ass fairytale about saving the glee of dreams.
Some characters return but most don’t, they take their rest after their involvement.
& only the tone & the look of the glade shifted depending on the personality of villain involved.
In my mind there’s this balance of comedy & tragedy that is dark & on the edge of tactless for kids.
Magical, whimsical, radical, riveting.

Sonic himself was not dark but he was mysterious and elusive. Even more than Shadow.
The wild thing is that this is how Sonic was intended to be from the jump and in Japan, Sonic consistently was like this. It’s only over here in the west where they try to make Sonic light hearted and cutesy because late 2000s xenophobia for Japanese franchises made Sega run from what Sonic is
Eggman/Robotnik's full name is "Julian Ivo Robotnik" so both Eggmans are the same person but with the whole time traveling and multiverse hopping (as well as SEGA distancing from Archie before cutting them out completely iykyk) things just got really really muddy and confusing. So to damage control- in Archie, they just made them completely separate entities while in the games and cartoons, he's just Eggman (the new redesign). They've only recently just started using "Ivo" again but it's weird. It's still his middle name but they use it in place of his first name lol

I see what you’re saying and I do agree. I love the thought-provoking storylines in this era, especially SATAM, as like you said the rise of technology and its affects is a real life issue, and I loved how that show covered it without being preachy. Also Shadow’s backstory was very mature for children to teenagers media. As times gone on, the franchises stories just aren’t as interesting to me anymore. In fact they feel more comical than ever, which is why I couldn’t get into the Sonic Boom TV series.

I love when Sonic was much darker. Frontiers is heading to the right direction. Hopefully someday we'll get a rated T for Teen Sonic game. I feel like that'll work much better for Sonic.

Shadow was gonna be T-rated. But Sega decided to switch up and go E10+ because it was the newest rating at the time. Which, to be honest, should have never existed. E10 was such a a dumb choice. Adding mild language and fantasy violence doesn't change the fact that the game is still in the E rating category. Same goes for the A rating. Most A rated games can't even be sold, so what's the point?

The problem with Shadow 05 is that the retcons were just a big middle finger to his character arc in Heroes where he let go of trying to find out who he is, and the over the top edginess made me cringe hard because that tone does not fit Sonic, the game’s purpose was to pander to Call of Duty preteens, same could be said about 06 (seriously why is Blaze in it) However, I do miss when Sonic had love and effort put into their games.
He never let go and neither was it much of a character arc. He just went through a few effectively plotless stages, then have a cool oneline to the effect of "even if I am a copy, you still can't match up to me".

She’s not. The earliest form of Sally’s character was in the Sonic Bible which was a day after Sonic 1 first released. She would full on debut in 1992 while Amy came a year after.
