  • When it comes to the mid-size truck market, many overlook the Honda Ridgeline. One aspect of this truck that is overlooked is how great of a work truck it is. I'm a residential remodeler and am on my 2nd Ridgeline. I plan on getting another. The trunk is a great toolbox and the swinging tailgate makes the bed super accessible. It is the only mid-size pickup wide enough to accommodate 4 x 8 sheet goods. That width translates to a much more roomy and comfortable interior than other mid-size trucks. Being nearly as wide as full-sized truck also contributes to the outstanding handling. Since it is not as long as full-sized trucks I can load and unload it in my 24 x 36 heated garage. With a wall of 2 foot deep shelves holding my tools along the back of the garage, I would have to open the garage and pull out some with a larger truck. Living in Minnesota that is a deal breaker. The only reason I'm considering getting a full-sized truck when I retire from construction is to get more towing capacity and maybe the ability to go through deeper snow. I find it ironic that other construction workers mock this truck when it really is the ultimate rolling toolbox.

      You're right. I rarely see one in the parking lot of my local Home Depot. I've used my 2007 as a DIY apartment building owner in SF since it was new. Have hauled Numerous 100gal water heaters, lumber, closet doors, sheet rock, plywood, cement boards, etc. Looking to upgrade to a 2023 by the end of the year.

    I've owned this truck for 3 weeks and I love it. This is the first new vehicle I've purchased in 15 years so the technology is more advanced than my 2007 Civic, although some ppl may think its not techy enough. Visibility is great, no blind spots like the 2023 Civic I tested. Very quiet, camera system is panoramic, lots of space. I can't say anything negative about it at all. My husband backed it down the steep gravel driveway at the lake house, solid he said. Love it...and love that's its a reliable Honda.

    I'm very satisfied with my 2021 Black Edition, which is my daily driver and used around a horse farm. On-road performance is better than with "real trucks", and I get higher mileage than reported. The wide bed is great for moving sheet products, furniture, etc. My off-roading doesn't include rock-hopping, but I do go on sand and dirt with no issue. Higher ground clearance would raise the center of gravity and detract from cornering ability - that's a trade off that doesn't work for my use and is over-valued for most people. The AWD system is designed to avoid getting stuck in the first place, while a conventional 4WD is more meant to power you out once you're stuck. Those stuck on the supposed body-on-frame's superior design show limited perspective. Honda was simply ahead of the curve with its unibody truck design. Just look at the success of the Santa Cruz and Maverick.

    • @freespirit1975
      @freespirit1975 Před 11 měsíci +2

      Yeah, I don't get the "real truck" slur either. In my life, a real pickup truck was usually two wheel drive and hauled stuff in the back bed, and had a beefier suspension. Bouncy bouncy ride. I get that some deer hunters need a 4 wheel drive pickup with a bed to bring back a deer. I had a friend that had a 1973 GMC Jimmy complete with big all-terrain tires and a Warn winch and we did some hellatious off roading in it in the early to mid 70s. It wasn't a "real truck" either. I guess it was probably the first "SUV" except the back part of the roof could be removed and that made it look sort of like a pickup. Good old days.

    I have a 2008 original version. Traveled for work a lot. Didn’t do any heavy work but I wanted something for my big frame that rode more like a car and could still haul a bit. Also loved the in bed trunk so I could keep the back seat open and be able to lock things up that couldn’t be seen through the windows. I’m nearly at 395,000 miles with minimal maintenance and repairs needed. And the engine is still strong. I’m pleased with it.

      Yes! Every Toyota within driving distance has a dealer sticker next to the one from Toyota jacking the price up 10 to 15% or more plus added on (unwanted or useless) accessories that can be another 5 to 10%. I have not seen this on any of the Honda dealer lots.

    Love my 2023 Black edition. Comfy as heck and I LIKE the interior despite it being old because I've used some new ones and there is something to be said for more "traditional" interior controls. Visibility is excellent and the sound system on the top trims is fantastic. Android auto works great. I like the push-button shifter! The handling is so great for a big car thanks to the torque vectoring... Wish we had ventilated seats! Added the OEM tonneau cover and window deflectors. Also OEM mud guards. Averaging just over 18mpg after 1200 miles - mostly non-highway for me.

  • @jg8263

    Posted this as a reply below about bed depth, but I wanted it to be general info in here, so reposting and edited version as a primary comment as well:
    The Honda has the largest cubic feet of capacity (before you factor in the trunk, which will add an additional 7.3 cubic feet) of any crew cab mid-size (except the Ranger), as its bed is 4 inches longer and 3-5 inches wider than the competition, which adds up.
    The Honda is THE ONLY mid-size that can flat-haul 4x8 material and fit an ATV between the wheel wells (again bed depth doesn't help with wide materials). Not to mention Honda had the best payload of Crew Cab 4x4 trucks in the mid-size class until the 2019 introduction of the Ranger and Gladiator and still maintains 3rd to them since, and is only a little under them in payload, meaning it has more bed capacity in both cubic feet and overall lbs of payload than the Colorado/Canyon, Frontier, and Tacoma 4x4 crew cabs.
    Let's break it down for comparison with 3 of its competitors, using 4x4 (since truck bros say that defines the Honda as not a truck, so 4x2 configs of others need not apply either since they are not real trucks, but more seriously because 4x4s represent a majority of sales in the segment) and Crew Cab/Short box configs since the Honda and the Gladiator are only offered in Crew Cab (and again because crew cabs represent a majority of sales in segment):
    Baseline: Honda Ridgeline: Depth 18.5", Width 60", Tailgate 50", Wheel Well 50", Length 64", Cubic Feet 34 (plus additional 7.3 in the trunk), Payload 1508-1583lbs.
    Ford Ranger Crew Cab 4x4: Depth 20.8", Width 60", Tailgate 46", Wheel Well 45", Length 60", Cubic feet 43, Payload 1300-1696lbs, best in class in depth/cubic feet and max payload, yet only beats Honda by 100lbs at best (base trim coupled with max tow package) and in other configurations is 200-300lbs less capable.
    Jeep Gladiator: Depth 18", Width 57", Tailgate 45", Wheel Well 45", Length 60", Cubic feet 33.5, Payload 1100-1300 on all trims (Max Payload/Tow package on base trim gets to 1600, so at best 17-92lbs better than the Honda, and usually worse by 200-300lbs).
    Tacoma Crew Cab 4x4 (best-selling midsized truck at ~40% market share, fun fact #2 is the Ford Maverick): Depth 19.1", Width 56", Tailgate 44", Wheel Well 41" (comical), Length 60", Cubic feet 27 (even more comical), Payload 1095-1155lbs (absurdly comical). Clearly actual work capability matters less to mid-sized truck buyers than projecting the image that you go off-road, because that is almost the only thing the best-selling Taco is better at than the Honda.
    So, we see the Honda is pretty standard for bed depth, has the longest and widest short box in segment and second largest overall capacity (whether or not you count the trunk), is the only one that can flat-haul common building materials, and its most-capable competition is only 100lbs or less higher in payload (and then only in their base trims), with the higher trims actually dropping below the Honda's WORST payload.

    It seems like the competition can only beat Honda in towing (actually this is also a caveat, as the max towing numbers they have are for 4x2 single or extended cabs with a max tow package, most of the competitions towing numbers are about equal or less than Honda's when looking at the commonly sold crew cab 4x4) and off-roading. In fact, using the Colorado as an example, it tows 3500 lbs, unless you get the Duramax and/or max trailer package, which achieves the 7000-7700lbs advertised value, the ZR2 off-road package matches the Honda's 5000lbs. Ranger is only 3500lbs unless you get the max tow package for 7500lbs (admittedly most do since it is cheap on the Ford, not so on the others, good job Ford). Tacoma 3500 (I sense a theme here) up to 6500.
    It is amazing that when one looks at facts, and not advertising and "truck bro" opinions, the Honda is actually average to above average in its capability compared to the most commonly sold configurations of its competitors. As is commonly stated in forums, it is the truck 90% of truck buyers actually need in terms of capability. If you go off-road a lot, it isn't the truck you need, if you daily drive and haul materials, it is actually just about the best option. As for the competitions max trailer values, well anyone who actually tows enough knows that putting a 7k lb trailer behind a 4500lb mid-size truck is not a wise move, no matter what the ratings say. Plus, 5000lbs in the Honda will pull all of the following (I literally did so myself and weighed them all), with room to spare: 21ft Lund Pro-V with 250hp motor (4200lbs), 21ft bunkhouse camper (or 25ft expandable camper) (4200lbs gross, as towed less than 4000 since I only tow with empty tanks, dry weights are approx 3k lbs), 4 Polaris Sportsman 570s on a 20ft Aluma trailer (~4500lbs), 16ft UHaul enclosed trailer with max load, 2 horses in a 2-horse trailer. The list could go on, but I don't see many people in mid-sized trucks towing much larger loads than I just demonstrated.

    • @jg8263
      @jg8263 Před 11 měsíci

      @@VegasSki absolutely, especially if you equip with all weather tires like a Firestone weather grip or similar tire. You can run them year round and they provide snow tire performance. I use this combo (OK I have Falken Wildpeak trail tires, same just more gravel oriented) here in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Great snow and ice performance compared to a rwd/4x4 truck, and better ride in all conditions.

    • @richardhouvener6423
      @richardhouvener6423 Před měsícem

      This is a year later but I just saw this today. One of the things I don't see people mention is the fact that the Honda has AWD in place all the time whereas a part time 4WD must be shifted into 4H manually (except on pretty expensive trucks with4A) which can be potentially serious on winter roads (or rainy) that can go from dry to snow or ice in a matter of feet. Just a safety factor to think about (or one you don't HAVE to think about in the Honda). The payload of a recent Tacoma TRD Pro I test drove was only 995 lbs. Wow, compare that to 1500+ on the Ridge. Talk about which is a better work truck.

      That is so true! I have a 2017 Touring Edition and it has multiple standard options that are still not available on US models. It makes no sense to me that the Canadian model is so much better equipped. My 2017 Ridgeline is now 7 years old and it still looks and drives like a new vehicle. It appears that on the new 2024 Ridgeline, Honda has decided to remove most of the extras from the Canadian model rather then up grade the American model. However, it seems that American model now did get the side mirror signal lights and the HVAC controls on the back of the centre console for the rear passengers. Not sure what other changes were made.

      Im pretty sure it's these 3 things... 1 Black RTL-E wheels. 2. Blacked out window trim, just like the Sport model trim. 3. The Interior. a. Black piano trim pieces on dash and shift surround, b. Two tone black/red leather. No other difference as far as equipment. IMHO as a Black Edition owner ( 2 years, 30K miles) , it's usually 1 element of the BE that makes it the reason you wanted it or not. For me, it's the blacked out window trim. I would've been perfectly happy with an RTL-E, just couldn't stomach the chrome.
      Also, I think the Sport wheels are the best looking wheel and was very tempted to swap them when I purchased. The interior, I probably would've rather had the plain black, but it's fine. The piano black looks good clean, but it looks awful dirty and dusty which is about all the time unless you wipe it down everyday.

      @Martin Stockel Yes I already picked my color combo based on Pilot. But knowing Honda they will screw that up.
      The Modern Steel color with Brown interior offered on Pilot Elite.
      So it's unknown how they will spec a Ridgeline this time. They skimped on USA spec RTL-E Ridgeline. The didn't have ventilated front seats. They didn't have power folding mirrors. The didn't have Rain Sensing Wipers. No Rear Heated Outboard seats. No separate HVAC controls in rear. They skimped on the gave Ridgeline dated instrument cluster.
      So I don't think Ridgeline is getting Panoramic Roof. Bose I guess would do in-bed speakers. Will yhey continue these Black Editions?

    The bed depth on the Ridgeline has to be the worst in it's class , maybe the next generation will fix this.

    • @jg8263
      @jg8263 Před rokem +2

      *edited for more facts to back-up*: And yet the Honda has the largest cubic feet of capacity (before you factor in the trunk, which will add an additional 7.3 cubic feet) of any crew cab mid-size (except the Ranger), as its bed is 4 inches longer and 3-5 inches wider than the competition, which adds up. Also, it is 18.5" deep, vs the best-selling mid-size Tacoma at 19.1" deep, so yeah it's *sooooo* much less depth than the most popular competitor (that represents ~40% of all mid-sized truck sales), so a lot of people must be ok with that depth. I will concede the Ranger has a 20.8" depth giving it the largest capacity in segment for a short bed (see below), but it is the deepest in class, and has trailed the Honda in sales since 2022 (In fact the Honda is the 3rd best-selling mid-sized truck since mid-2022) so that extra depth clearly isn't a selling point. As for extra depth, while I can use stakes and straps/nets/tarps to secure cargo that is taller than the sides in any truck, Honda or otherwise, I cannot magically make the truck wider for materials, so given the Honda having more or equal cubic feet of capacity and payload (again see below) than all but the Ranger (comparing crew cab short boxes), I would rather have the extra 3-5" of width, than a very small amount of extra height.
      Tacoma Crew Cab 4x4 (best-selling midsized truck at ~40% market share, fun fact #2 is the puny Ford Maverick): Depth 19.1", Width 56", Tailgate 44", Wheel Well 41" (comical), Length 60", Cubic feet 27 (even more comical), Payload 1095-1155lbs (absurdly comical).

      @@jg8263 this is an amazing and comprehensive response! You should try the math with the 6' 1-3/4" long bed Taco. The width of the Ridgeline still makes it nearly equal, until you factor the in-bed trunk. Ridgeline wins again!
