I’m a bit older, grew up a hillbilly in the 1970’s, almost dirt poor. We grew our own food, raised livestock when we could afford it. Ate a lot of wild rabbit and squirrel. I know construction (all trades), auto mechanics, and electronics. Then moved to the city, still poor. Ran with poor whites, blacks and Mexicans. Learned the ways of the street. Joined the Marines...I’m educated, know how to lead. Not worried. Just hope I don’t have to use my old school skills.

I have learned that honey is ...not a disinfectant, but if a wound is clean already it prevents infection from setting in to put on honey as if the honey were mercurochrome, through natural anti-bacterial properties that the bees use to protect their food supply from spoiling.
They make prescription salves out of honey to make use of this natura bacteriostatic l property of honey, but plain honey itself is actually as effective as the prescription honeybased salve for one tenth the price at the grocery store....
I am using it now on a nasty scrape to help keep it clean while it heals. (The only temptation is to dump a dollop of my medicinal honey into my coffee-- "No no no! Save the honey for its medicinal purpose, and take your coffee black!" I tell myself!)

I got 3-6 months worth of food for the humans and cats of my household. 120 liters of water in containers i rotate every 6 months, water purification tabs, bleach, a kids pool to catch rain water in the back yard, and life strew. Several Lysol wipes containers, several baby wipe containers, first aid kit, A 3 day emergency supplies kit with food, water, handcrack radio with a USB port to charge phones, medical supplies, shelter which you can just grab and go. A backpack for each of us with a full change of cloths, jacket, and sweater, shoes and 3 pairs of shocks and underwear. So if we had to leave are house in under 5 minutes we grab the backpacks and the 3 day emergency kit and first aid kit. I got allot more in the house not listed like self defense items, camping supplies, heating sources, light sources, I'm prepared to shelter in place for at least 3 to 6 months. As for bugging out I have quick access to 3 days of supplies. But bugging out seems pointless where will you go ? If you have no where to bug out too why leave all your supplies behind. Its better to stay in place and try to defend your home. Make friends with your neighbors if you have to shelter in place its better to do so as a group. Having several house holds coming together into one house hold or looking out for each other gives you far greater chances of survival than trying to bug out. When you bug out you leave your shelter behind. I live in Canada in BC yes the weather here can be tolerable for most of the year but it still gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. Without shelter you won't survive.

Nowadays, I have a gas generator and another solar generator indoors and I have rechargeable touch lamps in every room of my house. I have a few low-watt heaters and an electric blanket that I can use if it happens in the winter. I only had 1 N100 mask and wasn't highly prepared for COVID but I got some Tommy Copper masks. I ended up loving Scott's toilet paper because 4 rolls = a month and that was easier to do the math. I bought a steamer and a UV lamp to disinfect and wasn't running around looking for disinfecting sprays or wipes. I ended up buying a gallon-sized hand sanitizer and that is lasting a whole pandemic. In the end, I feel like I made it through this year's power outage and COVID pretty well.

I did a 30 mile hike into the bush on a separate occasion, and we had iodine tablets and filters. We wanted to try our cool 007 filters, but quickly realized it was going to take days to filter the amount of water we carried and consumed on the ruck in. So the iodine tablets, teamed up with a t shirt to filter out large particles, as we drew our resupply from slimy stagnant water, gave us what we needed within a couple of hours and made it back.

The only way we can stockpile a 2 month's supply is to cut back on the number of doses we are required to take. Worst case scenario is we would have at most a 7 day supply, best case 30 days.
Bleach expires. You want to keep cycling the bleach in and out of your kit. That's true with any items with a shelf life.
We experienced an episode in a small town where the ENTIRE town's data system went down. Couldn't buy anything unless we had cash. Even the bank's system was down so we couldn't even get cash from the ATMs. And there wasn't a disaster or power outage.
As you and FEMA suggest, we are accumulating non-perishable supplies before the need arises (for us, a 2-3 month supply should do). It's easier to buy supplies when the supply chain isn't stressed than when everyone is buying all that's available. This CO-19 event made it difficult to impossible to get some supplies due to hoarding.
Have a bucket and a clean, unused, preferably new toilet plunger to do laundry.

If your doctor agrees, ask him to double the strength ( milligrams) of your medication. Then use a pill cutter to take the right dosage. For example, if your prescription is for 25mg , that's what you'll get when you cut the 50mg pill in half. I doubt you can get a presciption for 6 months, but ask your doctor if you could have a 2 month prescription. It doesn't hurt to ask.

As far as books, one of the stories I read as a kid in the 1970's was in boy's life (boy scouts magazine). In the future, scientist have round a wormhole and a probe shows its a good place for a colony. The first ship sent through never responded back so another ship was sent. A stowaway got on board and was discovered just as they were prepping for the entry. For a time they kept him in lock down but finally had to take him out. Since he was something of a joker, he kept screwing things up, but not in anyway that would harm them. Then they found the first ship. It was all good, but things were off, as they tend to be, but looked like no one had fixed anything since the ship entered the wormhole. The captain decided that since he was such a problem, they would confine him to the other ship after getting it running and using remote they could keep it up for him. Several days later, they got a message that he was using the connection cable and coming into the second ship. Before they could stop him he was running around the ship knocking thing over and upsetting everyone. When the captain finally caught him as he got to the bridge, they asked him what he thought he was doing. Since he was bored, he had hacked the 1st ships logs and found out what happened. He then asked the navigator to check their position and they were badly off where they were suppose to be. He then demanded the captain check all stations and have them report their condition. What had happened both in the first ship and the second was everyone got so bored they stopped paying attention and it had cost the first crew their lives and almost cost the second one theirs. From then on, every ship that used wormholes had to have a joker on board.
Moral of the story, make sure you take time to relax and enjoy things, and even in a lock down you need something to keep you amuse, or you stop being alert. We need more lerts, esp. in a lock down.

I personally am not one of that crowd. My hedge against inflation is purchasing now the things that will be either unattainable or unaffordable in the future. Money is just a medium of exchange, and it can quickly become worthless. Just ask the people of Iraq with Saddam Hussein's face printed on their worthless money. So for me I'd rather have the things that money can buy, and have them now. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Peace

I understand what you are saying but what I do know is that last year, I had the power go out and I had a generator big enough to run my heat and a/c and rechargeable lights and clean water and food that didn't require refrigeration or cooking. And COVID happened and I had an N100 mask before masks were common and I had month's worth of toilet paper and I literally didn't see even one pack in the stores for 3 months. I had bought a steamer for disinfecting and a UV lamp for disinfecting water and my cell phone. In the power outages that I went through, none of the gas stations or grocery stores could accept cc's, and the cash I had enabled me to keep my gas generator powering my house and after that storm, I added in a solar generator and what I will tell you is that I was just about totally prepared for those disasters. Other disasters, maybe not. But I was prepared for the typical disaster in my region, with cold, icy winters and frequent power outages. And for the pandemic. Both of those types of events, I skated through. My whole house is now decorated with rechargeable light sources. Flameless candles and touch lamps. I am probably over-prepared for some things like dry goods. I have friends who didn't have toilet paper for a month and they survived but my life was better for having prepared.

It's too bad most people don't carry the equivalent of a super computer in their pocket... oh, wait

JCS without power that thing in your pocket won’t last long! No power no recharging!

Most retailers(around here, anyway) have their registers backed up by a short-term UPS that gives about 72 hours of operations time in the event of a power outage. I expect this is a standard practice for major retail chains across the continent. The lack of network, not the lack of electricity, prevents debit/credit transactions from occurring(at least normally).

My pharmacy refuses to fill extra months. I don't have thyroid and they still don't even if I pay out if pocket.

Lilly, you have to ask your doctor to write the prescription so you can get two or three months worth. Then your pharmacy will fill it. If they don't, go to another pharmacy!

True... you can get 3 months of some meds but not anything like sleeping pills or pain pills

@@MrJonrocker If you go to a non VA doctor,he may give you a 'scrip for the same meds.Fill it at Walgreens instead of the O P Pharmacy in the V A and you are good to go. Of course,it won't be 8 bucks a pop like the V A but it can be done.

I skip my dose on each Sunday. Over time, I have saved a full 30 days. I’m careful to replace the “savings” with my new RX each month and use up the saved so it’s always current.

You can have the best items prepped and no guns or knives or junk as you said and I'll come along with my rifle and take your stuff. YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND POSESSIONS. Panic and looting will run rampant when shtf.

T-ski... my thoughts exactly! If i decide to 'prep' - it is for ME & MINE! When a gov't agency says to stockpile,.... OK, i'll stockpile,..... but NOT keep it where YOU expect - because in times of SHTF,... the GOV'T TROOPS have the right to come into our homes,.... and WE are expected to accommodate them, resupply if necessary, and give them shelter. IF they decide to take all that I have when they leave,.... the GOV"T likely will NOT compensate me for my losses! SO,..... I'll accommodate,...... but my MAIN STASH will NOT be accessible to them! AND,..... if - let's say MARAUDERS are casing my place - they will assume that since the GOV"T was parked there,.... that I have plenty to share - when the GOV"T leaves! Oh what a surprise they'll get!!!
