  • In this episode of the Jiu Jitsu Junction podcast Andre and Chase discuss several factors that can indicate that a BJJ school is a good one.
Some of the indicators of a good jiu jitsu school that were discussed in the podcast include:
    1. Student success in tournaments
    2. Cleanliness of the school
    3. Live grappling occurring in most/all classes
    4. Upper belts being on the mats
    5. Class sizes
    6. Women, kids, and teens being on the mats
    7. Restrictive contracts
    8. Allowing cross-training
    9. Friendly gym environment
    10. School providing service and/or community instead of a "you're lucky to be here" attitude towards students

Nothing highlights a good Jiu Jitsu gym like experiencing a bad jiu jitsu gym. Great video guys!

Thanks! That’s definitely true Michael - that contrast can make you appreciate a good home jiu jitsu school haha

I didn't know the difference between gyms. I just picked the one with the coolest logo.

I must have visited a dozen grappling academies in the last 20 years. The worst one was that of 2023. I sustained 7 concussions cause the instructor allowed students to roll 100%. He even encouraged going hard each class.
Strangely he has a neck surgery and and back surgery, and du for his hip surgery soon. I'm giving you the tip of the iceberg. A good BJJ school has more than 10 signs of being beneficial for students.
    I appreciate yall podcast.

That’s a wild story glad I don’t train in that kind of environment

@@jiujitsujunction I left that academy. Right now, a 21 yo borwn belt comp phenum is the instructor. The best one I've ever had since 2002, and the best academy since 2002. We have all the range of skills, ranks and types of students.
      Have a beautiful day sir.

      Depends on the individual school.
Some are great. Some not so much.
Most of them are more traditional

Very strict rules, they make you wear school specific gear etc… not my thing.

I trained at a few GB schools, it varies per school
Some take their drilling seriously, some schools do drilling very very lightly and it doesn’t really feel beneficial. Some take too long doing warmups so you only have 45 minutes of learning
