Are there other videos from Kraut that I should be checking out?
You're spoilt for choice with Kraut. Scars of History is particularly good, as are the videos he deleted, which can be found elsewhere on YT. Also, a Russian called Setarko did a pretty good response to this video.
The video “why Saudi Arabia is doomed”.
American gun culture
It's a very propaganda channel
The Turkey series is an absolute must!
He's from austria, so I'd call your guess close enough. He's not perfect when it comes to staying absolutely unbiased sometimes (nobody really is), but I believe in his intellectual honesty and ability to give food for thought with great presentation. He generally responds to criticism and mistakes in a pinned comment and for example linked in his latest video about the ideology of putin's russia to a russian philosopher who not unlike you watched his video and gave critique, which Kraut was thankful for. Also I think you can sort of differentiate his videos by looking at the thumbnail and if there is no polandball on it, it's probably going to be more opinionated and about current events.
In my opinion he shines in his longer videos, especially those with a focus on geography and history and his recent video about Geographical Determinism is one of his best videos. Even if a video title seems purely political he usually starts to explore those topics through a historical lens and can present it very well.
Also about why he included Mexico in this video. You could see it as a hint to mexican cartels, but I am fairly certain it was more of a joke and hes was alluring to how Mexico keeps its population "drugged" with delicious tacos. Otherwise the polandball wouldn't haven been drawn so cheeky.
@@Kralchen You foreigners would wish it were tacos the drugs of the Mexican people, ironically, drugs themselves are just one of the three drugs the country consumes and it's destroying itself because of it.
I am not bias
No i am not on drugs and no i dont have mental problems
Yes i am real
Every time Mexico's countryball showed up on screen, it was holding tacos. I don't think Kraut was trying to show the stereotype of drugs coming from Mexico; I think he was trying to joke that tacos are as addictive as illegal substances.
"Psst, You wanna buy some Tacos?"
I buy it.
@@callmefox630 always
As a Mexican, i can confirm
How ironic considering I had tacos for lunch.
Fun fact:
The first British animated movie was a full adaptation of Animal Farm.
YES YES YES finally a Kraut reaction. Though it would be sweet to react his series on Mexico.
I wonder how Terry would even do that since the Mexico series is very long
@@Spongebrain97 Well at least the Manifest Destinies episode since Vlogging Through History did an episode on Kraut's series on Turkey
Kraut's Ottoman and Mexico series would be great livestream content given their lenght!
There is a major problem with alcoholism in Russia. Over a decade ago a family friend used to go to Russia for business and it is not uncommon for 7-10 glasses of vodka to be consumed during dinner. Also it is considered an insult to refuse a shot of vodka for any reason.
It has one of the lowest life exptancies for men with alcoholism have a large part of the blame
I'm russian and 7-10 glasses of vodka per dinner is not common, whoever thinks it's ok is probably dead or has a steel liver, though Russia is big and traditions may vary from region to region
@@bal-tc3gw guess at least some regions are on the path of recovery
@next level cooking @@bal-tc3gw 7-10 glasses!? Since you didn't specify shots, that's 700ml-1000ml, or a family + guest putting away A GALLON OF VODKA per meal! Even if nobody can afford that, nobody is going to drink that much.
And it's just fine to refuse vodka. It's considered rude to completely refuse hospitality, but Russians understand non drinkers; 15% of the population is Muslim and another 20% simple doesn't drink at all. The polite move is to ask if you could have tea or some other drink; Russians basically always have tea on hand, so it's a perfectly reasonable request.
According to figures, much of western Europe drinks more than the Russians, we don't have videos like "How Wine Ruined Italy" or "How Beer Ruined Germany".
What? As a russian i never meet anybody who actualy does this. We drink like 1-3 glasses only to celebrate stuff like new year (its like christmas), birthdays and important events. Of course there are many alcoholics, but thats not a norm, they're hated by society.
Where your friend was? In village, or something?
Alcoholism in Russia (and other Central/Eastern European countries) is a very multifaceted issue.
It isn't just the poverty. It's also the culture. It is considered rude to refuse to drink a shot with someone, with very few exceptions like being on medication and things of that nature.
At most weddings you won't see wine, or any other alcohol for that matter. Everyone is drinking shots of pure vodka in between eating and dancing, and it flows like water.
Thankfully it's changing (at least in those countries that joined the EU), and at least in my home country, Poland, vodka consumption went down significantly.
Poland is still 2nd in the world in per-capita consumption of vodka, but it's a lot better than it was just 10 years ago.
Animal Farm! The animated film version is such a gem. After whatching it you will put it on your teachers scedule! My history (and also ethics&norms) teacher showed it to us 12-13 years old barely-teens in the late 80ies in Germany... and I'm still as shocked as gratefull for that experience !!!
Ngl, it's a really good film, even glorious. But a friend says it's completely bad and the book is better? Idk, I'll read it eventually but I would like to hear an opinion on her opinion (confusing hahaha)
@@l-nolazck-rn24 It might still be a great introduction to the book (like GOT was to the books for example), in this example it's also kinda helpful since early teens aren't known to like books like that, if they happen to enjoy reading to begin with.
I haven't watched or read either (plan to), but I think this can be applied to any book that gets adapted (even if glorious on their own, the adaptations are almost always inferior to the books given that novels are kind of the superior story medium, though shows like GoT emulate such storytelling quite well.)
The old animated one was also funded by the CIA apparently
Too bad it's a load of bull that absolutely twisted everything that happened in USSR.
Little note on 3:28. Vodka did exist before the Columbian exchange, but it was made from other sources of sugar, such as rye.
He never said it didnt. He simply said potatoes didn't exist in russia until the columbian exchange. The video says it right before his comment on potatoes also.

I mean anyone who’s known him for a while can tell you that he literally had to take a break from CZcams because he went down a very bad rabbit hole of accusing anyone he didn’t 100% agree with as being a fascist and doxed multiple people. How he sticks to this and is good.
@@unoriginal_username1 Yeah I remember his CZcams break
@@unoriginal_username1 Wait, he stopped and regretted these extremely toxic and divisive actions, right?
Great channel, I have been a fan of his for a couple years his video on China vs India the state and the society is a must watch.
Kraut is awesome. his videos on Mexico and Turkey are amazing but very long, I highly recommend them tho
proper way to stifle the consumption of alcohol without banning private and corporate production of it is by doing it like sweden and norway, you are allowed to produce your own alcoholic beverages as long as you dont sell it on your own, if you want to sell it, it has to have an alcohol content low enough for the type of beverage (2.5% for beer in sweden for example), if it has more than that alcohol content, it has to be sold at the state owned alcohol stores systembolaget (sweden) or vinmonopolet (norway)
The cynical view of the rulers wasn't wrong. Right about the time my alcoholism completely spiraled out of control, I also found myself in a job I absolutely hated. I stayed in it for years because every night, as soon as I drove out the gates of the facility, I immediately drank myself into a stupor. Eventually, I got sober and immediately got serious about finding a new job. So yeah, if you're a crappy leader, keeping everyone drunk would help stave off a revolution.
YEEEEEES! (like the Thor meme) You absolutely HAVE to react to his Turkey series!
As Russian, I say, that real men don't drink alcohol.
True as fuck abstaining from vice is the most chad shit you can do.
Kraut is fantastic you should watch his video about Trump’s biggest mistake. It goes very in depth on Chinese history
Kraut is god tier, deadass.
His recent video about Putin's mindset or whatever is interesting, but some people have made some good points against him.
I would LOVE to see your thoughts on that
He's a Russophobe in general who needs to see Russia as evil as possible. I hope he doesn't go cold this winter. ;)
@@Mortablunt Well, the only detested parts was that Putin doesn't actually read the guys that Aleksandr Dugin steals from, yet Putin has still implemented their philosophies and teaching into the education system for some single sentence things he heard and thinking "yeah, Eurasianism sounds cool" while being completely unaware that the same writer thinks there will be a religious prophet that will rise after the Soviet Union collapses to lead Russia to a theocracy and destroy democracy.
In essence, Putin teaches his population about people he doesn't know about. Dugin just likes them and content steals. (Literally has nothing to do with being a Russophobe, these people are labeled Christian Fascists)
@@sethaniel1 And I see you don't actually know anything, ether.

Kraut is such a good content creator. My first videos of his was the series on Turkey and I absolutely loved it, though I doubt it's reaction content given how long it is.
I’ve never heard of this before. I’ll have to go check his channel after this.
I’ve seen all his videos (that weren’t deleted) solid channel but with a dark past.
Yo! Your finally reacting to kraut I'm so happy to be apart of the people who recommended this channel.
Mr Terry I don't remember if you react to living history much but if you are interested Todd's workshop just put out what could be the best arrows vs armour look through looking at Agincourt. I would love to get your take on it.
I would say that there are a few big differences between enforcing a state monopoly on vodka production and the prohibition in the US that made the former much easier to enforce. For starters, an autocratic monarchy, where defendants essentially don't have any rights to due process, can simply execute moonshiners and smugglers without any lengthy appeals process; so it will not clog up the legal system with an excessive amount of cases. This "efficient" enforcement is further enhanced as local nobility who have been granted their own vodka production license will do the same kind of enforcement to protect their own profits alongside the Czar's.
The restriction was limited to vodka, not all alcohol. Everyone could still brew beer, cider and other liquors if they had the facilities and could spare the grain to do so.
And finally, the monopoly itself wasn't a ban on vodka. Vodka was still pretty abundantly available, just from a singular monopolistic source. So it's not as if there was a huge supply gap in the market for a product with a lot of demand, like what the prohibition suddenly created in the US.
A small suggestion my dude: Either pause the video you react to when you talk, or bring the original video's volume down if you'll only pitch in with a brief sentence. It was hard to make out what you were saying in some of those brief notes...
Interestingly enough, alcohol consumption was in steady decline in 20xx in Russia, and the type of alcohol consumed switched from mostly vodka to something like beer. I suppose having some extra money to spend on something other than fire water that will make you drunk cheapest way possible helped.
90s on other hand was terrible in oh so many ways. Having no money to get decent food people used to buying alcohol from shadiest places. One of my relatives died because "vodka" he brought was actually made of methanol - there is no way to tell ethanol from methanol by smell, but methanoll will kill you or at least leave you blind
True. Counterfeit beer is safer and easier to spot by taste and all, and you just can’t consume enough in one sitting to get lethal dose unless you have personal intolerance to something in it
A REACTION TO A KRAUT VIDEO LESGOOOOOOOO
I do think his comparison to the opiod epidemic is rather apt though. If you look at the "punishment" purdue Pharma got it was a little more than a smack on the hand and whilst you're right in saying that highly specialized medicine can't be easily bootlegged, there is always going to be a bootleg alternative. Heroin for example. So yes, the Pharma industry in the united states might be regulated, but so was the Vodka production in Russia. How it is regulated and to whos benefit, is the real question here.
Alcohol is medical, though it is old medicine. I think the the point he was trying to make with the pills is that it is under government control, just as alcohol was in Russia. But our government has more control with pills because the average civilian can not make them.
Or a commonwelth. we had them as vassals too :)
Hello Mr. Terry,
I have a question about the history of Thanksgiving. Why are we taught the first Thanksgiving was a union between the Pilgrims and Native Americans when the Thanksgiving we celebrate today was started by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 after the Battle of Gettysburg? There was no evidence of a Thanksgiving throughout the 1700’s and much of the 1800’s unless there was a one-off holiday.
React to the The Turkish Century. Excellent one. VTH did it a while back.
Potatoes also have a very high calories per acre ratio, so rent paying peasant/serf farmers can devote most of the farm to cash crops and reserve a small plot to feed their own family.
Sweden actually has a state monopoly on alcohol but it's done for completely different reasons. Edit: and it's pretty benign from my point of view. You can't advertise alcohol in Sweden. And they try to keep the profit motive out of it as best they can.
Yes

There is a animated history channel called SideQuest, you should check it out.
You should watch extra credits the first opium war and the lies episode
Kraut is excellent. Also please check Potential History's video on why Japan surrendered
Mr terry I’d argue that one of the main differences between prohibition in American and modern “prohibited substances” and the monopoly of Russia is the US didn’t/doesn’t kill drug/alcohol dealers while the Russian state would crack down HARD on any production outside of the monopoly. The west and America doesn’t really prohibit substances anymore. We all know people use them occasionally a example is made but we all know someone who’s done drugs. The same isn’t the case in some nations that are very strict on drug prohibition. Japan and South Korea being two examples. There will be black markets but it’s the acceptability to that market which makes the difference.
ahh Kraut a classic
I find it odd that he equates the opioid epidemic in the US with state sponsored alcoholism.
Maybe if we had a national health service that would work, but medicine is expensive in the US. And, unlike alcohol, the average American can't just make bootleg opioid.
...having said that, meth might work as a parallel, but that's not exactly something the government pushes on the citizenry. (Outside of ADHD medicines...)
Unlike Russia, in America, it's a symptom, not a cause, imo.
Not state sponsored, but certainly state subsidized.
Pass the SSRI, SNRI, tricyclic, or other antidepressants.
opiates are there to curb (not cure) misery, people's pain... just because you need a prescription for it did not stop people from getting alcohol during prohibition and didn't stop a few doctors from flooding parts of the US with easy to acquire opiates at cheap prices... the only real difference is the state in Russia benefits from the misery where as individual drug companies benefit from this misery.
I feel like I'm insane; everyone's showering praise on the video and on Kraut, and I cant get past how the video doesnt actually answer the question it raises. The title essentially asks, "Okay, how exactly did vodka ruin Russia", but then all he does is explain the history of the manufacturing rights of alcohol in Russia, and go on a biased (though not necessarily incorrect) diatribe about how alcohol is bad for the soul and alcoholism is ruinous. It asks a question, and then answers everything *except* the question it asks; instead of explaining empirically how vodka specifically ruined Russia specifically, it just goes "alcohol is bad, mmkay?" And acts like thats some lofty, intelligent, enlightened, and complex perspective that requires additional reading to understand.
Like, is lazily explaining something in a monotone over stock footage really all it takes for people on CZcams to think you're brilliant? Is this where we're at?
Oversimplified's video on American Prohibition started with the Temperance movement, just asking people to drink less and consider alcohol's place in society, I think that was a good starting point at least to curb drinking even if nationwide prohibition blew up in everyone's face. You're not going to get anywhere just telling people to stop a vice, especially when the Soviets have more success keeping people dulled and are making profits directly. Maybe USSR would have turned out differently if it had more grass roots communist movements by the people to go against government, but then you realize the people in charge of these vodka factories are in power because of the czar, Stalin and whoever follows and don't want to give up that position of power.
There is no such thing as “grassroots” communism, all communists movements have been wealthy intellectuals trying to seize power by exploiting working people

I think Sweden had the same problem until the selling of alcohol became state regulated.
But technically from the video, it was Russia's efforts in turning vodka to a state owned commodity is what caused the problem in the first place.
Interesting how that works.

kraut I find one of the best Political Essay writers and has a mature, serious..though at times dry. he has his biases (which I typically agree with), but he knows his material and doesn't try to change the story to fit his own narrative.
you weren't really listening to a lot of Kraut's points.
Prohibition is certainly NOT the way to go! Putting stressed addicts in even more stress through persecution only makes things worse for the affected people.
kraut is very strongly anti Russia and he has been making almost exclusively content where somewhere in it he mentions Russia negatively even when it has nothing to do with the topic at hand
As a Russian, this Kraut's video really rubbed me the wrong way. Russia has a lot of issues, tonns. Alcoholism is among them, but the stereotype is overblown and outdated, Russia is behind many European countries on alcohol consumption nowadays. Since Kraut doesn't care to look at the numbers and prefers only painting a narrative, I will do it for him. According to 2016 report by the WHO, Russia is on the 17th spot by total alcohol consumption per capita in the world, behind countries like Czechia, Germany, Ireland, France, Portugal, Belgium, Bulgaria and all the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lituania). The same report provides us insight into what type of alcohol is being consumed most. Russia is on the 57th spot when it comes to what percentage of overall alcohol consumption is made up of spirits, with 38,6%, behind countries like Armenia, China, Estonia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Latvia, Japan and Israel and only ahead of the US by 4%. Russia's favorite alcohol is actually beer, making up 39% of the overall alcohol consumption, just slightly ahead of the spirits. Just to reiterate, the problem with alcoholism does exist, mostly in the poorer parts of the country, but it's not nearly as big as people make it out to be and kraut playing into this stereotype is not something I appreciate. The reasons behind him doing that are unclear to me, but that's one thing I noticed with his videos, it seems the narrative comes first and facts are only used if they prove his point. This was a big reason why I unsubscribed from him
The question is not amount in a country of 15%+ Muslim population, the question is counterfeit and mortality from alcoholism-adjacent conditions. Wine and beer are simply less deadly.
I like Krauts videos but he seems politically bias in my own opinion. A word to the wise probably research on your own time the topics he discusses so you can confirm the things he presents.
Actually, addiction is preconditioned on genetics. That is the premier precondition since addiction affects humans, mice, rats, monkeys, etc.. The rate of addiction is constant over the species border. The socio-economic factors are secondary and thus function as triggers only.
As someone who has chronic pain and had suicidal thoughts, I have to say that morphine and opium are great! Not only are they very effective in pain management they are even a lot more effective in quenching suicidal thoughts and depression. I simply don’t get why these commodities are so demonized.
Because these substances are incredibly easy to get addicted to. They make the body physically dependent on them.
Not only that but they are insidious. You get tolerant to them very fast. Which can lead one into a much deeper depression as they realize that their escape no longer works.
It should be "How Russians ruined Russia".
💀💀
The American moment
