    I wish Cameron and Disney would have given us another disc in the set that was faithful to how the film was shot and looked in 1986 as well as his 2024 version.

    I use a product called Un-Du adhesive remover. I use it to get all types of stickers off of slip covers, the disc (center hubs) and even the art insert made of paper. Used it on my 3 Cameron slips and removed the stickers without any damage at all. Took less than 5 minutes each...being patient for the Un-Du to work before peeling is the hardest part. 😁

    I got 4ks because of the experience and partly preservation. Mostly the experience . So im happy that the abyss looks great, good experience good blind buy. But i will admit peaople that value preservation should be upset & lack of film grain does slightly take away from the experience & 80s feel of thus movie . 24 year old here. Some of the corny 80s jokes doesnt hit the same without that film grain

    The reason The Abyss looks the best is because that's actually a 4k scan. Was never on bluray before

    • @deckofcards87
      @deckofcards87 Před 2 měsíci +5

      Exactly. Scanned from the original negative, which is ideally what UHD should be for: giving the consumer the closest approximation of the theatrical experience. It's debatable whether the color timing on The Abyss 4K is accurate, but whatever. It does look nice.

    • @Marvdogger2
      @Marvdogger2 Před 2 měsíci

      And Titanic another with a more recent 4K scan. Those two looks the best whereas Aliens and True Lies look the worst.

      @@Marvdogger2 Haven't seen Titanic in 4K but Aliens looks phenomenal. If that's a "bad" 4K transfer keep putting out more like that. Although i concur The Abyss did look slightly better than Aliens.

    • @ps5andstuffhere

      Aliens looks good but could be better. I gave it 8/10. Could be sharper and have abit more detail if was actually a 4k scan and increased film grain slightly. Apparently the source is 2k. Abyss is a proper 4k scan.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      True Lies was also sourced from a 4K scan of the OCN (though the OCN was apparently in pretty bad shape, and they had a lot of problems with it). Haven't been able to verify the source with Aliens, but I don't think we know for sure one way or another.

    Loved The Abyss and True Lies. I've been waiting since Blu-ray was first introduced in 2006 (or 2005 I may be wrong). Terminator's 1&2, Aliens & Titanic all got Blu-ray releases, but The Abyss & True Lies never came to Blu-ray until it was announced in late 2023. I have no idea why it took so long for these 2 movies to come to Blu-ray, but the bottom line is that it's great to see both films finally made the Blu-ray release.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Apparently they had planned to put out True Lies and The Abyss on blu-ray like 10 years ago or something, but then there was some sort of conflict between Fox and Cameron, so it just never happened. They even had HD scans done for these titles, but for whatever reason couldn't get it to blu-ray. But I agree... so glad we finally got them. It's about time!! These were definitely essential films for the format.

    James Cameron was very busy first chasing shipwrecks, some real deep sea exploration, then making some very big Avatar films, and as such cleaning up The Abyss took a back seat - for years. I just got a 4k HD copy of Aliens and The Abyss today and will be watched tomorrow ! Can not wait.

    My brother - I could not agree with you more! Just watched True Lies last night and lining up Abyss and Aliens soon.
    My own two cents here is I want the best clarity and most amount of detail in a 4k. I get the “purist” approach of wanting to keep grain structure and all - but at times 4k to me doesn’t look great with too much grain.
    I also watch all my films on my Sony Native 4k Laser Projector and onto a screen. The screen does apply a bit more “grain” appearance as well….its a screen. There is some “structure to it” versus todays modern TV’s.
    I’d ask the “true haters and purists out there” if they think all these “original movies” were ever shot for “OLED” televisions or if they were meant to display “on the silver screen in theatres.” (at least the films made decades ago and not modern films shot on digital). I do think with as good as modern televisions are, they show more perhaps than they even should and could be adding to the “waxiness” everyone keeps talking about. It’s plenty full of clarity on my projection screen but I don’t see very much “over-processed look” or “waxy appearance.” So maybe it’s just my set up…
    I thought even True Lies looked fantastic “to my eyes and on my equipment.” (Getting that review up soon with the others to come)
    Appreciate your input and thoughts as always my man!

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thank so much my friend! Very interesting points you make, about the larger projection screens vs. TV panel. Someday I'm thinking I would love to go the projector route. It's not practical right now for the space we're in, but I've been thinking more and more lately that I wouldn't mind going down the projector road at some point in the future.
      I actually just watched True Lies again last night, just to see if I felt any different on second viewing. I definitely noticed a little more of the processing the second time around (more the "smoothing" than anything else). In fact, I'd probably even revise my review score downward half a point. But I still think the film looks the best it's ever looked on physical. It's not perfect, but I'm glad we have it.

    Greetings Fuzz! Just found your channel and subscribed. I'm a big fan of 80s horror, sci-fi and action. I've also collected many of the Alien franchise movies and sets over the years. I have the Pinball Brothers Alien LV #335 pinball machine and two 1:1 Alien busts. I've read a lot of the Alien books and have numerous statues and figures from the franchise. I'd say it was a 'tie' between Alien and Halloween as my favorite franchises. I just received my 'Aliens' 4K media from Amazon but still waiting for 'The Abyss' and 'True Lies'. Tonight I'll watch 'Aliens' in my home theater and really looking forward to it. Great review!

    Love the reviews, Fuzz! I completely agree with you on the visuals the the films all three were gorgeous and showed so much detail. It wasn't just the skin and hair, you could perfectly see the textures of all the sets and props. To me, it was almost like watching the movies for the first time because the worlds felt so much more real, like i was right there with the characters.
    As far as people critiquing things like lack of film grain, my question would be: why the hell even watch the movies on 4K? Just watch the VHS or DVD versions. High definition grain? I just don't see the point.
    My only critique of your reviews is that you left out any mention of the audio tracks. I am much more of a visual guy so sound isn't really my thing but man, these films with my Dolby Atmos surround headphones were all crystal clear with great sound depth. All three were a joy to watch start to finish. It is crazy how long Aliens and The Abyss are but the time absolutely flies!

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah they really are a completely new type of viewing experience. I found it to be very exciting! It almost was like experiencing them all over again for the first time on some levels, like you said.
      As for film grain and 4K, I may be able to shed some light on that. Because of the higher resolution, we do tend to see more of a film's natural grain structure on 4K than we ever could before on lower resolution formats. And the fact that the natural visible grain has been reduced for these 4K releases is what some collectors are flipping out about. But I completely agree. They were all thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
      You have Dolby Atmos surround headphones? I didn't even know such a thing existed. Now I'm gonna have to look into that! That sounds awesome! I know I don't talk about the audio as much, but it's mainly because most of the time I'm watching movies late at night with headphones (I just use my Beats Studio Pros, which sound great... but I'm very curious about the prospect of Atmos cans). So I just feel unqualified to talk about the audio on these releases. plus I don't notice stuff with the audio as much when it comes to movies... unless it's just something really incredible sounding that jumps right out at me. I think I just tend to be a little less focused on it in general.
      Thanks for chiming in! Great to see ya! And of course, I appreciate you watching as always.

    I used a hairdryer to gently heat up the adhesive on the sticker on my copy of the abyss.
    I think the shortage in the states could be down to people selling copies to countries that don't have the releases yet.

      Someone else mentioned that about using a hair dryer as well... I think I'm gonna give that a try. Thanks for the tip! As for the shortage, I've also heard there are limitations on the manufacturing end, that there's only like one plant producing discs for all of North America. It kind of seems like Disney just didn't plan very well for this release. It seems like they didn't realize the demand was going to be as high as it is (bizarrely), so I'm guessing the production runs were just not as large as they needed to be.

      Yes, the new blu-rays included are sourced from the same new restorations, so they would have a similar appearance, just not as high on the resolution (and no HDR). Some of the digital processing may seem a little less pronounced, but for the most part, yeah it's still there.

    @TheOriginalFuzz Just received The Abyss this week, the one I wanted most right away, and waiting for Prime Day for specials on Aliens and True Lies. Like you, I’m thrilled that, after many twists and turns over the past decade or so, these films are available NOW!
    The one thing I like about James Cameron, like Chris Nolan, is how much they have learned and continue to learn shows up in the final product. Always driven to make better films, or in the case of Cameron in the Avatar era, better looking ones.
    I don’t always agree with you about the movies you like, but your genuine affection for them and the way you share that on your YT videos is infectious and a breath of fresh air. Please keep up the good work!
    Thanks! Wayne
    PS Have you done videos about your setup? I have an inexpensive Sony 4K player (my second after a PlayStation), and wonder if there’s an affordable upgrade @ or under $400 to your knowledge. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again! 👍

      Thanks Wayne - Appreciate that! Glad to have you here. Very cool you at least got The Abyss first. That was the one I was most excited about, and that was the one I had to wait the longest on lol...
      To answer your question, I haven't done any videos on my setup, mainly because my setup is pretty modest. Is your Sony 4K player an X700? If so, I would say your best bet for upgrading would be a Pansonic UB820. Those units have kind of become the industry standard, and you would notice more of an upgrade with the features and image tweakability, etc. The UB820 has this cool HDR Optimizer that really helps you get the best image, particularly on lower-end and mid-range 4K TVs. They're a little pricey (you can usually find them for about $400... around black Friday they had them for like $350 on Amazon, and that was the lowest price I'd ever seen for that unit), but they're great players and very reliable. And everything is a little more "automatic" than on the Sony players (like Dolby Vision, etc. -- you don't have to toggle such things on/off manually).

    I’ve been waiting for your full thoughts on these Fuzz! I agree that it’s nice for the most part we can agree to disagree on certain aspects. I didn’t love the two transfers that I have seen. I personally didn’t have to much of an issue with True lies which most people seem to hate the most. I was just thrilled to have an HD version of True Lies. The old DVD was very dated and it needed an upgrade. While I thought it had issues I was still overall happy. Aliens is where I had the most issues and you hit the nail on the head. ai just didn’t vibe with the changes. I thought some close ups looked bad to me. But if you or anyone love that clean look that’s perfectly fine. I wanted to love it but just couldn’t. Also when it comes to James Cameron and people knocking the person. That’s not cool with me. Just like how people feel about George Lucas making changes to his films. I might not love all of the changes but you have to respect it. It’s their films and they can make it look and sound anyway they want too. I still can’t comment on The Abyss because I still don’t have the 4K. I think we can all agree at least that Disney did a bad job with supply management on this one. They had ample time to have enough to fill pre orders. Thanks for the video Fuzz! I totally understand what you're saying, but I personally don't think Iger was ever that invested in physical media. In retrospect, when he made that comment about exploring "legacy" forms of distribution, I think he was probably referring to the deal they just cut with Sony to have Sony distribute all their stuff on physical media (apparently that deal had been in the works for a couple years). Sure, Disney has released a few titles on physical like Mando and Prey, but I don't think they had much planned after the Cameron releases. From what I understand, they got rid of a lot of their good people in their physical media division, and the people there don't really know their own catalogs very well or have the passion for or knowledge of the movies they now own. Hopefully things will get much better though with the new Sony deal. Sony does good work.

    Why do they use the digital rescaling process in 35 mm filmic films, is not that the filmic quality is much higher than the 4K resolution, so it would not need an artificial rescaling to enlarge the image, of course the filmic already has the quality to be transferred directly to 4K digital, without rescaling. I would understand if it were a VHS video because the resolution is much lower, but not the filmic, the filmic has very high quality.

    I still think we as physical media content creators should point out the flaws when we see them, as that's why I come to YT to check other reviews videos, and vice versa, but each person's perspective on their viewing will vary from person-to-person.

And while not everyone will agree, personally, I don't think these releases are really all that flawed in any significant way (save for maybe a few scenes/shots on True Lies... but even that is pretty small potatoes for me). Overall, I think they're great releases.

    to narrow in on just one section of the whole video, I think I personally prefer the theatrical *ending* of The Abyss, as opposed the longer and more drawn out version in the directors cut. I like that it keeps the water beings a bit more mysterious and ambiguous, but the rest of the extended cut I really enjoyed

    Also, maybe I just got lucky - but the stickers on my slipcovers came off without fuss with just a bit of patience! It still is asinine someone made the conscious choice to put them there in the first place anyway.
    it has also been fascinating to me to see this whole phenomenon. People are already treating these releases like they are OOP or going to be soon. I saw a copy of The Abyss on Ebay for over 100$ CAD for goodness sake!

      Yeah it's funny how that works. It's pretty nuts. I'm guessing in a few months, all of this will eventually stabilize and copies will be widely available. But it seems like this was a terrible time for these releases, just in terms of Disney being in the process of shifting their physical media production over to Sony and getting ready to shut down Disney Movie Club, shut down their own physical media division, etc. If these titles had been in Sony's hands to begin with, I doubt we would've had any problems with the rollout of these titles. But scalpers definitely live in the moment LOL!

    I don‘t know specifically which social media posts you are referring to around the 17:00 min mark (I am not on social media except YT), but your subsequent dismissal of what can be defined as OBJECTIVE data as ridiculous is problematic.
    Very few people get their TV calibrated by a professional or at least get the proper settings for their TV so they can get close. Most watch with factory settings, almost guaranteed to be wrong. An objective analysis cannot be done this way.
    There are very good reviewers out there who go to great lengths to give us an objective image analysis using calibrated equipment. Values like peak brightness go along with it. Data analysis is important because it gives us a hint about the technical merits of these releases and if good work has been done here. The 4K disc specifications offer more resolution (pixels), more peak brightness (nits), a wider color gamut, and higher contrast over standard blu ray if the mastering was done correctly. The basis to get the most out of the format is a 4K scan of the original film.
    Now, analysis reveals that no new scan was done for Aliens. So we are left with the detail and brightness of a 2K scan. Scrub away the grain and you are left with even less detail. Grain is an organic component of film and there is detail hidden inside it. To remove it and then enhance it with whatever algorithms is certainly JC‘s prerogative. But JC could have made sure that to get at least the proper foundation. He didn’t. His reasons? I can only speculate.
    Here is a good review of the 4K disc which should be viewed on a 4K HDR capable display:
    czcams.com/video/ltbfjkb76WI/video.htmlsi=lnNFvtaUKXToBld1
    It is definitely a problematic release and I can understand anyone who is upset about it.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Well that's where I think we disagree... I don't think it's a problematic release. I think people are reading way too much into it. And the problem with videos like the one you shared is that they're often framed as "objective" and "unbiased" when in reality, they're not objective or unbiased at all. It's still just someone's opinion about what they think is going on or how they think it looks. They're just couched in technical terms and data to make it seem like they've "proven" something when they really haven't. I would submit there is no such thing as objective and unbiased these days. Everyone has a bias, whether they want to admit it or not. And so much of this stuff is subjective.
      Re: Aliens on 4K, all I know is what I saw with my own eyes. Detail was most definitely off the charts compared to anything we've ever seen before. More depth too. I've now watched it twice, and I was even more blown away by the level of detail on display on the second viewing than I was on the first. There's absolutely no doubt in my eyes that this is a significant upgrade over the blu ray in terms of detail, but some are talking like they were still using old-school DNR "scrubbing" away the grain, when in reality, the tech they're using now is far more advanced, nuanced and precision-based. From what I understand, the detail wasn't just enhanced... it was preserved to begin with.
      My issue is that people get so hung up on technical specs and technical details that they end up missing a lot of good stuff. I don't really care if it's sourced from a 2K scan because I know what I saw with my own eyes. If people want to spin their wheels over the technical specs, that's fine. But I have no interest in that sort of thing. I trust my own eyes, and as far as I'm concerned, the Aliens 4K looked fantastic. If I want to see a grittier look, I can always go back and watch my blu ray. But I suspect the new 4K is the only way I will watch this moving forward.
      Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I sincerely appreciate it. I realize not everyone is going to like the look of these new releases, and I respect that. But I really do think it just comes down to personal preference.

      @@TheOriginalFuzz Thx for your answer.
      When dealing with - as you call them - Cameron haters in the comments, you stated you have a problem with their tendency to make sweeping assumptions without having all the information or relevant context.
      Well, information can come in many forms. Technical data is one of them and it IS important. In many areas our lives we depend on technical specifications and that they are measured and adhered to. Ever flown on a plane?
      While film entertainment certainly isn’t a matter of live and death (though some get pretty emotional about it), a part of it is has always been a technical realm. Once we get past creative intent it just gets technical. And picture data can be measured. Do you deny that? Are there established technical specifications for the 4K disc standard? Sure there are. When they are used correctly to their fullest potential we get better picture quality. Did the data on the Aliens 4K disc come close to full potential? Not in the slightest.
      Of course, your right as a consumer is to ignore the technical side and be entertained by what you look at on your TV (on whichever settings you prefer). Most do this. You are also quite evidently not a technical reviewer. But you proclaiming that technical in-depth reviews are not worth their salt because there is no such thing as objectivity „these days“ (whatever that means) remains highly problematic because hard data obtained through precise measuring is the best way to get closer to the bottom of things. Other approaches fail reliably.
      In that sense you deny yourself relevant information. Either because you don‘t understand it (you can learn) or you don‘t want to deal with it. Your own words point to the latter. Just be aware that you do the thing that you accuse the Cameron haters to be guilty of.
      And just because you don’t see a problem doesn’t mean that there isn’t one.
      As for my subjective take after watching the 4K of Aliens: it is watchable but far from a reference release. I can deal with Cameron‘s decision to remove the grain (he always hated it) but those AI enhancements just don‘t feel natural in many places, especially in close-ups. Uncanny valley territory. Why not get the additional real detail from a fresh 4K scan? There would be little need to apply that AI tool. But JC seems to love that tech.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@Achilles248 Thanks for your thoughtful response. I should clarify something here, because I don't mean to give the impression that I think technical data has no value at all. That's not the case. I don't think technical data should be dismissed outright. I agree that it can be a helpful tool. But I also think that sometimes technical data alone can be deceiving, and it doesn't necessarily tell us the whole story about what's going on with a given release. For example, I've seen incredible reference quality 4K discs that were sourced from 2K scans of the OCN, and I've also seen poor quality 4Ks that were sourced from 4K scans of the OCN (case in point: Terminator 2 was sourced from a 4K scan of the OCN, and we saw what happened with that release and the Studiocanal screw-up. It's widely considered one of the worst 4K releases ever, and rightfully so). The main point I'm making is that not every aspect of a release can be quantified with technical data... because of people's selective perception and other factors as well. I've had 4K releases that didn't necessarily look very good on paper, but then I pop them in, and I'm blown away. So I was just trying to encourage people not to get too hung up on technical data without popping in the disc and judging for themselves. I don't want to see people get scared away from a release just based on the technical data, when they may not even have a problem with the release once they watch it with their own eyes.
      Thanks for spending the time with this discussion. I do understand where you're coming from, and again, I appreciate your comments here.

    • @Achilles248
      @Achilles248 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@TheOriginalFuzz Yes, Terminator 2 was not good at all. Waxy images thanks to DNR and the color grading was off (maybe Cameron’s doing). And apparently they only used one perspective of the two images that had to be created for the 3D release for the 2D 4K (Studiocanal‘s fault).
      A lot can go right or wrong during the entire workflow that brings the images from the original camera negative to our TVs. And great UHD Discs from 2K video sources have been made, you are right. The wider color gamut and high dynamic range alone can beat standard blu ray. Coupled with a good upscale and good encoding you don’t necessarily miss the information from a true 4K source.
      One always hopes that the people involved know their stuff and are doing their best work within the constraints imposed by budget, time and technology. Or big egos (Hi James!).
      Cameron’s tinkering with his releases goes back to the days of laserdisc. Already back then he tried to alter the images and get rid of grain. He also brought his own TV to the studio responsible for the mastering of the Aliens Special Edition laserdiscs and demanded that the image had to be tweaked so that it looks good on his TV and not on the mastering monitors, the supposed logic being that audiences at home don‘t have a mastering monitor TV. Yeah, but that‘s not how it works and it surely drove the people at the studio crazy (who certainly knew better).
      It still was great to have that Collector‘s Edition and back then I couldn’t see that this particular release was botched up. Small CRT TV and it surely was better than VHS.
      But that AI thing and letting us wait ages for this releases is totally James Cameron. He is a control freak and by now is totally in love with the digital video look.
      BTW, information from Bill Hunt / The Digital Bits:
      “True Lies, Titanic, and The Abyss were all mastered from 4K scans. Aliens was mastered from the 2K scan used for the previous Blu-ray release.
      Titanic was scanned in 2012. True Lies and The Abyss were done more
      recently.
      That's all per Geoff Burdick at Lightstorm.
      Of these remasters (done by Lightstorm with Park Road Post -- their AI
      process, whatever they call it), True Lies was the first completed. Then
      Aliens, The Abyss, and finally Titanic. I'm told that each time, they
      learned a lot and got better at it. So True Lies is the one that's most
      "aggressive" is the word I would use. And Titanic and The Abyss are the best looking of them. But as you know, they all have the "modern" look that Cameron seems to favor now.”
      So, what the technical analysis found has been confirmed.

    A.I. software. Figures. Any software pushing A.I., is all the range right now. Mostly with hobbyists upscaling old movies with it.
    Not so sure Cameron had much to do with this, past spot-checking and approving the transfers. He's still busy with his ongoing Avatar serial.
    Still say the 'botched rollout' of these releases feels very suspicious. I don't know where Amazon are getting their current stock of True Lies and Aliens from (possibly cancelled orders due to the controversy surrounding those transfers) but I maintain a belief that all three releases were pulled, last minute. (With around 50% of all preorders being an exception.) And once retailers sell what they've got, you won't see these releases back in stock anytime soon. And yes, I realize sources with Disney/Fox are likely still telling you they simply underestimated product demand -- and perhaps an announcement is coming very soon that clears the air. But I don't think that announcement is going to be what anyone is expecting. This feels different than the typical supply & demand issue. I'm hoping I'm wrong, and by the end of May, all three releases will be available and plentiful. But when was the last time home video divisions within the sowing circle of corporations that make up the Hollywood system, were proactively open and honest about anything? Like, never. Cause that's never happened. Information simply leaks out months or years later.

I think that's part of why they made the deal to have Sony handle all of their physical media distribution. Many mainline studios just don’t get physical media as demonstrated by Disney not expecting demand for these films and whacking on ugly stickers that are tough to remove. If you want to remove them use a hairdryer on low to slowly soften the adhesive. It’s always worked for me.
    As for these releases, they’re not my cup of tea. If a film was made in 80s or 90s I want it to look like it was. I get that it’s subjective but I also believe that films should not be archived in this manner. Whether you are fully on board with this approach, ask yourself this question, do you prefer the presentation of Alien or Aliens? Different films entirely but also two movies shot on film restored using completely different but modern methods.
    As for True lies, I prefer the Spanish Blu-ray. It’s far from perfect but it is what it is, warts and all.
    I think the best way of summing up these releases is what is written on the Criterion forum, and I quote, “artificial smoothening of facial textures making actors look unnatural, grain reduction and other changes to make the film look less like a product of its time”. Perfectly put, and I’m certainly not a Cameron hater but a film lover.

I recall a similar controversy when the LoTR trilogy came out on 4k and whilst I had some minor gripes with some snall elements of those transfers compared to the Blu rays overall I thought they looked excellent and quite enjoyed them so I expect a similar situation here with perhaps True Lies giving me the most to think about given the reviews I've seen. But I only have the old DVD so I'm sure the new 4k will be a much better experience overall despite some of the "over processing" comments people have made for some of the scenes.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah I'm guessing you'll probably notice some smoothing on people's faces in True Lies in some shots, but aside from that it really does look so much better than that old DVD. I had a blast with it regardless. Great to hear they finally shipped for you!

      @@TheOriginalFuzz the only thing I will add is that personally, aesthetically I prefer the organic filmic look and I'm also a bit of a history nerd... So I'm not the biggest fan of revisionist tinkering to remove film grain and try and make something look "modern" unless there are inherent source material issues where this is necessary. However I'm not going to cry and scream about it like some people online seem to or spew vitriolic hate. Would I have preferred a more faithful organic transfer ? Sure...but we get what we get and as long as it's not T2 4k level bad or like that old Predator waxy Blu ray, then I'm sure I'll be happy enough with these discs especially given for 2 of them we still only have very very old DVDs.

    I would have preferred he keep the grain, its part of why I will upgrade older movies from Blu-ray to 4k. I only purchased the Abyss, which I last watched only on vhs before, and I didn't find anything egregious, though I have seen some stills from True Lies that did look waxy.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah True Lies is definitely the most digitally-processed looking in places, but it's not constant. Kind of just depends on the scene. But I did notice some smoothing. Apparently, True Lies was the first one they started working on with this new technology, and they got "better at it" with each successive film. So that's part of why it doesn't look as good as the other restorations that were done after True Lies. The Abyss was definitely the stand-out for me.

    I saw a very technical credible video on Aliens that pretty much proves it's the same master as the blu ray, not native 4k but an upscale from a decade old 2k master. Not that it matters as it's still better than ever before.

      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci

Hey, that’s fine and dandy, but at the same time don’t tell me the 4K looks bad. The 4K is the only way to watch in my view. 👍🏻

    Thanks Fuzz, I've already pre-ordered "The Abyss" (delivery estimated for 17th April) and I'm sure I'll be more than happy with that one given I only own a non-anamorphic DVD which frankly is the worst looking DVD I own and upscales terribly ! I'm not sure about "Aliens", some of the things you and other reviewers have said indicate the movie looks quite a bit different to the Blu-ray I have in terms of the overall way it looks and I'm not sure I'm going to like that...I may well be fine with it but I'd rather see what it looks like for myself before making a purchase. "True Lies" is my least favourite of the three, it's a good movie for sure and I have an "anamorphic DVD" of that one which is at least watchable on an upscale (unlike "The Abyss") but again, I think I'll try and get a look at it for myself before I make a purchase. Thanks for the reviews 👍

      Aliens definitely looks a little different... but it's just really clear and very clean-looking -- although the grain hasn't been completely eliminated. You can still see it in certain shots (like the shot where Ripley is first waking up from cryo-sleep on the Sulaco). It's just been greatly reduced, so it's not as gritty looking on 4K. But I don't think it looks too processed... just more modern because of the diminished grain. But there's some crazy good detail in Aliens... almost bordering on jaw-dropping in spots.
      As for The Abyss, you're definitely gonna dig that one over the old DVD. It really looks phenomenal. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I was lucky to catch Aliens at the cinema in 1986.
    The problem I have with this new transfer is what's known as DNR filtering with the image. In places it looks way too sharp. Too many people will say.... this looks like an improvement over what went before. For me personally, this is pushing the image to the extreme. It looks artifical and synthetic.
    There's barely any grain visible. I'm not one for heavy grain, but this is pushing it a little to far. A.I. application certainly is noticable, and Cameron goes for a look that makes the film feel less filmic and more synthetic in look and texture. It's unsual and unnatural.
    Some sequences look lighter rather than darker in places. Remembering the 'film' look of Aliens in 1986 gave the film the cinematic feel that this new technology that's been applied has lost.
    People want near total perfection with image today, and Cameron delivers an alternative take of Aliens through modern technology that feels cold and a little harsh on the eyes. If this is a taste of things to come, then I must withdraw from the A.I. spring board that Cameron and Hollywood have in store. Sad times indeed.

      That's cool. I think steelbooks for these titles may or may not happen at some point. These latest Cameron films are kind of a unique situation, so I don't think steelbook releases are necessarily guaranteed -- especially considering the screwy physical media situation at Disney and the fact that they're transitioning their disc distribution over to Sony. Disney had a hard enough time even getting standard slipcovered editions out to people in a timely manner and meeting the demand. Maybe once everything is transferred over to Sony, they'll entertain the idea of a steelbook re-release for these titles (after all, Sony is known for putting out great steelbooks -- so hopefully we'll get nice steelbook releases at some point down the line). But I'm not sure if that's going to happen anytime soon. Could be another year or more. I'm just speculating of course. That said, if we do get steelbooks, I'll probably buy those too (at least for Aliens and the Abyss). Those films would be worth the double dip for me. Thanks for watching!

    I will disagree with anyone who claims the detail isn't preserved in Aliens and The Abyss. The restoration removed all the grain but still left all the detail. It definitely was not a lazy restoration. I actually prefer some film grain, so it could have been better but I still thought it looked great. I saw The Abyss for the first time all the way through and I really liked it a lot. It was the best looking of the two. I haven't seen True Lies on 4k yet. I have seen Aliens several times before and thought it looked very good but would have liked a small amount of grain present. Both were awesome but Aliens is a close second, for picture quality.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Exactly! I would have more of a problem with the grain reduction if we were losing detail in the process. But that's not what happened with these releases. And to clarify, I like film grain too. I like that filmic look, and I can completely understand people preferring to retain that. I'm just flexible in that regard.
      But there are also a lot of people out there making all kinds of assumptions without really knowing what they're talking about or what all was involved with the process, etc. I certainly would never claim someone did a "lazy" restoration without knowing anything about the process other than "AI" was involved. It's almost as if people actually believe there's just some magic AI button that gets pressed, and bam!, instant restoration! LMAO!😆😉 Sometimes, we just don't know what we don't know... but not everyone is always willing to admit or recognize that (especially if powerful emotions are pulling one in a different direction).
