How to Fix a Broken Gaming Chair for CHEAP

  • So when two chairs broke down within literally 3 days of each other, I then couldn't just 'use another chair' as I had no chairs left to use. So in need of a quick but sure fix, I went on good 'ol gammtre and found a sturdy looking office chair for $10 AUD (about $7 USD) and used the not only the base stand from that, but also the gas strut and core plate to attach to the other chair and fix two chairs in one go! The Second fix however is more difficult, so you may need a drill and some self tappers to get that fixed.

    Hey Brian,
I am working for a major "Gaming" chair brand and I can confirm that almost all brands are buying their parts from the same factory. The broken seat substructure you had with your chair (where the welding broke) is literally the same as the one on our chairs. We also bought 2 cheapo chairs from Amazon for a comparison and they also both used this same part. Same goes for the gaslift, it's the same in almost every chair.
The only thing I'd be aware of are the wheels and the wheelbase. You can fuck up your whole chair with the wrong parts, since many mounts on the base or even these mounting poles on the wheels are angled. If you put angled wheels on a non-angled wheelbase your whole chair can break due to weight distribution. So just be careful on this one.

this happened to my chair right out of the blue, lasted just under a year. i thought id found a cheap comfortable and reliable chair til one day the welding just said "nope" :/ . the product is no longer for sale, so are they aware they sold people a faulty product? theres nothing wrong with the chair besides the welding being obliterated, very frustrating, especially because none of these manufacturers sell replacement parts

I have had many chairs over the years and had one break like the one with ripped metal (which I had welded and was good until it wore out) but also several with the broken plastic feet, all broke in same place and all Chinese and pretty much looked the same type. They were all in warrantly from Amazon so sent back but packing a chair up is no mean fete. The stress point of the feetbreak ones was proving to be not me swinging around or lauing back but to where I was leaning forward in the chair to stroke my cat. There is no allowance for leaning forward and down and the feet just snapped at the weakest joint with the plastic being less than one mil thick. Get what you pay for I guess. One other thing, I did bang my head on a glass desk with some force and fortunately it did not break or it would be a different matter. Great video as ever and thanks for taking the time to show us. I am sure there are a billion chair horror stories to tell :)

Ive kept one or two bases of old office chairs that people have thrown away for similar reasons. If you have space in a garage or basement, they come in handy if you have to repair one. Also, most of those 'gaming' consumer-grade chairs are made from thin sheetmetal and brittle plastics, probably explains what happened to these chairs. The ones you find in a corporate office are more overbuilt, some of the HON chairs come to mind, and cost more than double than most chairs people buy for home use.

The wear and tear that caused your base to fail is from your weight shifting around in the chair and when you make it roll. You were lucky to get the gas lift out of the broken base and the new caster base on. I bought 2 new gas lifts to fix a couple of failed lifts and I have yet to be able to get a lift out of both the base and the caster base without wrecking them.

    mine just broke off sideways.
1st time: found on the curb with a bent piston, replaced.
2nd time: the plate itself starts bending, eventually snaps off sharply with a crack running almost the entire length from the hinge to the front of the bracket, welded.
3rd time: weld broke, completely replaced with an extra-thick base from a 1990's chair that had swivel, backrest AND height functions built in
4th time: since the screws didn't match with original holes, drilled into wooden base in order to attach, screws ripped out approx 1 year later.
About to just break out the angle grinder and shear off the flat piece of an I-beam, drill and thread it to make the holes match for good.

    Two office chair stories.
One I took from a monthly sidewalk disposal while walking in Zurich. The people in some apartment left a high quality office chair (with lumbar support mechanism) for city pickup along with a pile of other crap; I immediately knew it came from a reputable brand and would cost me about $900 new. Not having planned for such things, I was lucky to have my SUV with me...and not the Mini...and was able to toss it in the back of the car. I cleaned it up and replaced one arm (found a spare on eBay for $40). A very heavy chair, with a steel base. ( I live in a place where people literally throw out their skis and bindings after 3 or 4 years...people make it a business by roaming with van during this time of the month.)
I have another chair that I really find comfortable...but...because the molded plastic arms connect at the base and the back of the chair...over-time they stressed and one eventually broke. I replaced that chair but the next time around, took black para-cord and connected each resp. arm's mounting points to take stress away from each plastic arm when leaning back. The black on black looks unobtrusive and part of the design. That chair has lasted me about 5 years and still counting.

@@rawdez_ I don't expect anyone to buy a welder to fix their chair. I'm just saying that I can be done. I have welded before, and worked in a fab shop producing trailers. It can be done with the proper settings.

I would have at least tried a chemical weld on the broken metal plate section with a product like J-B Weld. (I need my rocking feature)

Mystery metal seems to be the culprit here.....no point in welding mystery metal lol....I experienced this pain recently. I learned something about these chairs I never knew about. The chair I bought felt like I was sitting in the ocean...the plate that the seat bottom attaches to was bent...and it wobbled.....and I the old chair I hadn't yet removed became a donor and a short term improvement...but the creaking was driving me nuts...I did some searching via duckduckgo and discovered that within the gas strut there is a very simple bearing race, a few washers and rubber bushings, and a kit to replace these is about 12 on Amazon...so I ordered one and a new plate...(that was a rather frustrating experience shipping wise as Amazon transitions to independent contractors instead of FedEx for shipping) . So my seat no longer wobbles or creaks...but I do want to pick up the heavy duty base plate available, also on Amazon, the price of that one is about 30 dollars more than the one with the five year warranty that came with the one I bought. The important thing to note here is that the rocking is preserved and the chair functions as designed...let me find that youtube video too...information acted upon become knowledge, and knowledge is power...or so they say at any rate lol. I found it!!! czcams.com/video/00-94OY7u5A/video.html, that video being the one that showed me there were internal wear items within the gas shock enclosure..but the channel is a wealth of information for repair of most office furniture, indeed.
