Have I ever mentioned how glad I am that Iron Pineapple has such a positive attitude about games, like even if its a bad game he doesn't needlessly dunk on it he tires to find something good to say about every game and is willing to admit if a game just isn't his style that doesn't mean it's awful. Something interesting I noticed about source of madness: generally speaking, most modern interpretations of Lovecraftian monsters are fairly tame. Cthulhu is just a big squid guy, for a popular example. However, Source of Madness went absolutely balls deep into the whole incomprehensible idea behind Lovecraftian monsters. You really shouldn't be able to make any sense of the monsters you see. Maybe not great for gameplay but I absolutely love the interpretation.

    • @NieroshaiTheSable
      @NieroshaiTheSable Před 2 lety +148

To be fair, Lovecraft's idea of incomprehensible horror was often "it looks like a cross between a filthy non-white and an animal." Sometimes he got real weird like "a color the brain can't process" or "made of something other than matter" or something, but the man himself thought a squid head, iguana body, and tiny wings would make Cthulhu scary. Give modern writers and artists some credit for actually going above and beyond what Lovecraft ever put to print.

Something that most of the bad entries in this series get wrong is that in the souls games, you can die easily sure, but the enemies die just as fast. The fodder enemies typically die in two or three hits, and even the big boys will take maximum ten hits to defeat (bosses are the exception obv). This means the games never feel like a slog, and make the extreme difficulty exciting rather than boring

@@SissypheanCatboy It's not necessarily other artist's work it's pulled from, depending on how the AI compiles the image. Don't get me wrong, I do _not_ like the idea of AI art robbing artists of jobs in the way we've been seeing done by larger corporations and scrupulous programmers.
But there are artists who have legitimate uses for AI in their works and that don't infringe on the work of other artists, and the libraries used in such works don't necessarily come from publicly available (stolen) artwork. So I'd just encourage keeping an open mind even if it says AI-assisted, though I admit I also don't really know what kind of sources were used in SoM's case. I'd hope 'AI-assisted' reflect them using AI and images of their own or licensed work.

14:10 Achilles killing Hector is supposed to be the Good Ending for the Trojan War.
Hector's body vanishing as soon as he is killed removes the scene where Priam pleads with Achilles to stop defiling Hector's corpse by dragging it along behind his horses near the city walls so that he can be given a proper burial. Maybe it would have fit a Souls-Like more if Hector would rise as a mighty undead warrior if the plea is ignored.

Theoretically, it would be incredible if, in the hypothetical situation of BBPSX covering the full game, when the game starts showing its cosmic side, the truly alien Great Ones and the like were rendered in modern photorealism, to make them feel tangibly not of this world, like they’re bleeding into the incorrect reality so much that even their graphics struggle to render. I think that would be a really cool way to use the demake idea to service the game and its themes, not just as a (very skilled) coat of paint.

Really tragic, but also such a cool and meaningful nod to that quest. The visual storytelling is on-point as well, with how he clearly made an effort to restrain himself before turning completely, and that he drops you if you get caught in a grab.

Hello Iron Pineapple. I recently watched your Souls-like Part 11 video in which you played Enchain.
If you were looking for other shooters with a Souls-vibe, there is a game that I think needs way more attention. It's called Northern Journey on Steam. It's based on Norwegian myth and there's no guns, but crossbows and throwing axes.
It's not Souls-like in the way of dying and losing resources, but in the level design, atmosphere and exploration. I hope you check it out, I wish more people would see this game and talk about it. It's one of the best indie games I played last year and it seems to be so unknown at the moment.

what if there was a game where as you play through it you encounter the final boss at the end of different sections of the game, but the catch is that he has a gigantic health bar just like this and once you finally kill him the game just ends.
this could also act as a clear way to show your growth throughout the game as you encounter him throughout the game-time.

So, since I'm new I don't know if this is how you do it but I have a few suggestions for you, which I think you might like? I don't know, but I personally think these are good games that have been overlooked a bit. I'll start from least popular to most popular:
    - Pronty: new game, metroidvania, kinda Souls-like, the best description I can give you is underwater Hollow Knight. I think this deserves way more love than it's currently getting
    - Gothic (it's actually a trilogy but I know only about the first game that came out in 2001): dark fantasy, open world and with a lot of enemies that can and will kick your ass. It's not really that popular, it "only" has 6k reviews on steam. You might not know about it so I figured I'd suggest it to you.
    - Valheim: this one is really popular (200k and more reviews on steam) but I would like to know what you think about it
    - last game (I promise, I'm so sorry for this long-ass comment) Titan Souls: I know you are aware of the game but I couldn't find a video in which you talk about it. Did you already cover that in the past?
Anyway, time to wrap it up. Much love, hope you have a good day!

Having played Hardland, I guess it might feel aimless at first but once you listen to what the NPCs as to say, you start getting clues about where to look or what to do, the game doesn't really do any hand holding and expects you to be very curious of your surroundings, it's also full of secret interactions you gotta learn about throughout the game,
During my adventure I learned to walk across Elvish bridges with music thanks to an immeasurable amount of alcohol; Carried an old hero still sitting on his rocking chair to a place on the other side of the map that reminds him his past life; Looked for a disguised thief who's only give away is the way he talks which is incoherent to the race he's desguised in, and knocking him out with a frying pan..
It's a game that rewards you from paying attention to what it wants to tell you, and you have to be very patient with it,
and after 25 hours, I found 1 out of the 13 available endings,
It's not for everyone, but if you're into exploration in its rawest form, it's worth giving it some of your time
