Would get amp listening to Ced Gee Delta Force lacing up my Nike Delta Force before a game in 10th grade. My favorite group back in the Day. I remember hearing Funky on a promo for Red Alert back in 86-87 and that put me on a relentless hunt to find that damn song. Ced Gee will forever be my favorite producer!!!

When I was in 6th grade a bunch of Jamaican dudes were playing "Bait"...it took me time to catch on to Ultra. Red and Chuck definitely played them a lot. Give the drummer some is the one to push me over the edge.

The name and song titles is what caught me along with the beats but put all that with that super scientific rhyme flow blew my mind . Nobody I mean nobody out of New York City sounded like them when they came out and they had radio play on KISS FM with red alert 🚨. I loved these niggas a great contribution to the culture .
It’s amazing how hip hop terms definitions changes. Back in the day a freestyle was a rap that just really wasn’t about anything subject wise it was the rap version a free writing. And if you didn’t write your rhyme first it was called going of the top of my head. But now anytime someone don’t write they call it a freestyle.

Ultramag, ill rhyme schemes, ill production. pioneers of hip hop and Ced Gee has over the years become one of my favorite producers with a lot of production outside of Ultra; Synquis and Finesse with a slew of others. salute to the legends, salute.

I really feeling this lessons however you killed me with not letting CedGee be heard...As a day one Ced fan he was sooo under appreciated as a emcee compared to Keith but they complemented each other perfectly. At least I heard The Delta 👍🏾

Did I miss something? (House D.J. Jive 5 from B & B at the Harlem Karate Inst.) I first met Ced Gee, Kool Keith and the rest of the groups at the Wild Style concert down town. Too bad I missed the World Tour at Manchester and Europe. However, I took many photos and video's of them. They are down to earth, and just like Doug E Fresh and Red Alert, the most nice and respectful Entertainer's I have ever work with. When Mike the Millionaire hired me to take pictures of them at the El Cortez Club, I heard their famous hit "EGO TRIPPING" on Next Plateau Records. I told Mike that's the Record I played at all my parties. Didn't even know it was them. We had the best of times after that. Can't waite until the next tour. I hope not to miss that. High Five! Thank you Jayquan.

Diamond Shell's joint "Captain Speakin" used the "Watermelon Man" sample.. Also Super Cat laced it on "Dolly My Baby".
I agree the watermelon man beat was a nice sample that slot of rap groups used don't forget LL cool J used the watermelon man on 1800 LL cool J song on the panther album
Give the drummer some was released in UK as a single, definitely a favourite track as well as Chorus Line ft Tim Dog.
Always been my favourite band since I heard critical beat down in the 80s which blew my head off, still pump the album the four horesman which is largely ignored ..the best ❤️☮️

The Foundation: If you listen closely to Break North it contains the sample "Fly like an Eagle"
from The Steve Miller Band. They used half a bar of it. Its the background sound that loops
in between the drum beat as they are rhyming. Also Ain't it good to you is a jab at Rakim who
used the same beat around the same time.

Jay Quan respect for this bro! Kool Keith killed Moe Dee on "Bust The Facts" and kissed him in the Source Magazine in the article "Bronx Bombers". I believe Moe Dee never wanted to acknowledge him because Keith would have been too much of a challenge lyrically. It became easier for him to just ignore him.

Been waiting on this one Jay!! Lovin it.. One thing, in Mississippi we always get music MAAD late. "Ego Trippin came out in 86 but it didn't appear in stores here until early 87, that's when I copped it.
" Bait" I got on the "Red Alert Goes Berzerk" comp that didn't come here until 1987 by that time it was OLD!! LOL... I thought Ego came out before "Bait". I got "Mentally Mad/Funky" right between Ego and Bait. Plus the version of it on the comp didn't have the 4th Kool Keith verse. So my intro to UltraMagnetic happened in 1987.

A couple tidbits re: Nautilus, Ced Gee, JMJ & Onyx - Chyskills (RIP) did the heavy lifting on 'Throw Ya Guns", but a funny thing about that Nautilus sample is that Ultra used that exact same piece that Onyx used on Tim Dog's opening track on Penicillin On Wax when they produced his album. I wouldn't be surprised that JMJ & Chyskills heard that joint and went with it....

I remember back in '88 they were in Philly at a old club called "The After Midnight." I was 16 yrs old and they wanted 2 people to dance for them on stage while they performed. They got me and my friend Jay to do it and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Afterwards Ced complimented us on how dope we were. I wasn't even supposed to be in that club. A few weeks later we did it again for Public Enemy. I was always a fan but after THAT..mega fan lol. I still rock Critical Beatdown to this day.

Ultra/ Keith are the BEST....Lyrical imo Kool Keith is above all....Ultra just had it all, the Paul C connection, the art and creation...avantgarde....I got all the early stuff being there form the mid 80s.... interviewed Keith along with Kurt in mid 90s after their concert,,,,, took loads of pictures with keith, such a humble guy, anyway it was all so cool, remember Krown Rulers/ Camden Philly connection with Ultra...?

Mantronix is underrated. KLC and Mannie Fresh, in there opinion, both sight Matronix as the greatest Hip-Hop producer of all time.
I'm 21 y old but Ultramagnetic is without no doubt my favourite Hip Hop ever. As you said, they just so different from any other Hip Hop group but that's what makes them so special. Their Rhymes together with the Production, matches just so perfectly. Hope that the Kool Keith lesson comes soon.

Couldn't have said it better myself. That's who I liken them too as well -- the Wu Tang Clan -- had a completely unorthodox style, w/their own slang and got everybody up on the underground on their jocks.

I hung out with Kool Keith a couple times. I was rapping and producing in LA in the late '90s. During UMC's initial outing, I had been living with my pops and he was super strict. This meant that I missed out on lots of rap during 86-89. So upon meeting him I didn't really know who he was. His personality in-person matches his rhymes. I think I met him when I was hanging out with Raheem of the Furious Five. Raheem is a nut! Hilarious and we smoked a lot of chronic mixed with Morrocan h-ash.

I'm not even a dj and i got two copies of critical beat down on vinyl they were way ahead of there time even andre harrell knew they were dope that's why he managed them .

dr octogon is what got me into hip hop. dident even know about ultramagnetic mcs. its funny cause id been listening to whats the original break beats without knowing, like james brown, the meter, herbie hanckock, booker t and the mgs and p funk. really like the early golden age stuff, like 86,87,88
One thing you have to say is Ultramagnetic introduced having a drum rolls, something people like Just Blaze and Kanye perfected later on in Hip Hop.
