What an incredibly impressive performance! Her voice is both powerful and ethereal and with the atmospheric stage and music from the band - it creates quite a striking image! Personally, I really enjoy this type of aesthetic, so I would love to hear some more from them!

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The first time I heard GHOST LOVE SCORE with FLOOR..I was overwhelmed with excellent song and the Beautiful, Powerful VOICE of Floor. I got teary-eyed..it was such an amazing performance. Since then, whenever I hear Floor's version..I get the same awed experience. 💯

Welcome to the best band and female vocalist of our time, I know bold statement but if you take the journey you will understand ,the YT fan base is massive,passionate &very active, 80% of which is for the Floor era,GLS is the epitome of Symphonic Metal with more of a classical influence as is many of their compositions but many from this concert are much heavier ,also GLS is the most reacted to song on YT ever with several vocal coaches having over 2.5 Million views .But this was but a very small taste of what Floor & NW has in store for you.
*there are 2 pivotal events since Floor Jansen came aboard NW in late 2012 #1 Wacken 2013 - #2 Beste Zangers 2019 at this popular Dutch tv show filmed on Ibeza some top Dutch singers past & present get together and the person on the center couch for the day has one of their songs or a song that has meaning to them sung back to them reinterpreted by the other singers,novel idea .
Floor opened the show with the 1st song below and just blew everyones mind,only two of the other singers knew who Floor was but none of them had heard her sing with such versatility,after the 8 day run of the show Floor's & NW's popularity soared,stadiums filled up and ticket sales shot up.btw since Floor joined NW & after this show NW's fan base has tripled . on Mama Floor completely changes the tempo and song structure the song is about Samantha wanting to be more like her Mom, Que Se Siente by Rolf is originaly a merenge ,mambo type song so of course Floor does it her way,Winner by Tim he wrote for his brother who has Spina Bifida,About Love Ruben wrote about his parents divorce.

I’m a 76 year old man who was never into hard rock with the exception of Deep Purple and Queen. To have discovered Nightwish through reactors during lockdown last year.
I have very eclectic tastes in music, and discovered reactors when I was wanting to share my love of her music. Then I discovered Home Free, and Voctave and fell into an acapella rabbit hole. I’d always liked Pentatonix, but never heard of the other acapella groups. Now I’m still in shock that I like Nightwish because though it may be kid it’s still melodic and pleasant to my old ears.

Me Too! 74 here. Yes also on Voctave and HomeFree. This is the music I have loved all my life and it took the lock-down for me to take the time to finally listen to it. I never knew music like this existed.

Our 1.83m Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen is the third and present singer of Nightwish and widely considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time, yet undiscovered by a broad audience. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands, here is some more background information on her. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. Later she did a year Conservatory to learn some more classical singing. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. During this time Floor also did vocal coaching and as Floor is a perfectionist she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival which set new standards in open air concerts. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on CZcams. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered CZcams in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself performing this song at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left there. Floorgasm alert! Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band 'Sabaton'); daughter Freja (just turned 4 years last march); a horse and pony; a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

I enjoy their live performances more than recorded, but thats just me. I always enjoy the live performances of most bands. To me it shows just how much "magic" they need on the recorded music and how much is actually talent. In my 61 years I've seen a lot of bands that rock on albums but suck in concerts. Nightwish most certainly do not suck live.
I agree. And to be honest. The studio versions often sound a bit tame, once you've heard the live. And the intro to The greatest show at Tampere just kills the studio version, not to mention the Wembley. The whistle really took that sequence from epic to imortal in my humble opinion
Me too man, especially with Floor. One song I do love the studio version as much as the live is The Islander. They are so different but both amazing.

- Yes, for two reasons:
1) symphonic Metal has that epic/grand atmosphere baked into it, which lends it’s self to being really really well suited for live performances. Not to say the studio stuff doesn’t sound great, but live is where the power and passion can be felt.
2) this particular vocalist, Floor Jansen, is the 3rd and current front person for the band. The band has 25 years of music, but she only joined 8 years ago in 2013. So that’s 17 years of music that she wasn’t a part of in the studio. Nothing against the original singer, Tarja Turunen (wonderful full on pure operatic and classical singing, no blending), but IMO this song is elevated by Floor’s ability to switch styles mid verse. It gives the music depth and dynamics. Not only does Floor sound great, but her stage presence and showmanship is unreal. Everything is intentional, but authentic and not “manufactured”. She’s a beast at eliciting an emotional response: happy, anger, angst, suspense, longing, etc.
There are 3 go-to concerts for current era Nightwish (Floor on the mic). All 3 were recorded and mixed as official live albums so the quality is top shelf. The full shows can be found on YT and the live albums can be found on Spotify and similar.

Since you are a show/movie enthusiast reactor I’d like to make a suggestion: “Please learn this setlist in 48 hours”. It’s a documentary of when Floor joined the band mid tour as an emergency/temp replacement in 2012 (this Wacken performance you watched was only 8 months later in the tour).

I would say 4 go to concerts. Imho Tampere has a far better version of TGSOE for example and also showcases Marko's skill when he crushes The Islander!
I would add Tempere 2016 to the list of wonderful list of concerts (on the same DVD/Blu-Ray of the Wembley concert) Especially, the "Greatest Show On Earth", "The Islander" from this show should be seen/heard/reacted too.
Great points, but there’s a bigger reason most people miss. The mix engineer has a LOT to do with the sound of the performance. They sadly rarely even come to mind by fans, but they can make or break a band. Nightwish used a different mix engineer on their live performances, who in my opinion should have mixed all their stuff. His name is Kimmo Ahola and his drum mix is amazing, he has the guitar much more forward in the mix and bigger sounding than studio engineer Mikko does, and he just captures their energy well. Mikko’s mixes are very well-done, but too clinical and pristine. You hear every part well, but sacrifices the energy.
They have a new engineer on the recent album, who does a slightly better job of capturing that energy, but Kimmo is by far the best IMO.

Welcome to the rabbit hole of Symphonic Metal lol Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica are 3 of the best bands in the genre although there are actually many many more great bands besides. When it comes to Nightwish and Within Temptation you really can't go wrong listening to anything....Nightwish I would say Nemo, Elvenpath and Storytime would be nice followups to this song....save Poet and the Pendulum for later because there is a ton of backstory that helps to understand the lyrics and feelings during the composition of it and also it helps knowng the events surrounding the reasons why the band split from their first vocalist Tarja Turunen back in 2005/2006. The Greatest Show on Earth is another epic song I would save for a bit later on. For Within Temptation first songs I would give a listen to first now knowing your love for fantasy would be Mother Earth, Ice Queen, The Truth Beneath the Rose, Angels and The Howling. For Epica a few of my favorites are Cry for the Moon, Consign to Oblivion, Chasing the Dragon and Sancta Terra.

I see Gabriel has already been here. Congratulations on finding Nightwish. IMHO, they have been the best rock/metal band in the world over the past 20 years, and Floor Jansen may be the greatest vocalist of the recorded era. They have left a legacy of work comparable only to the great classical composers. Floor can perform in every style and genre from metal to opera to country, and does all of them to a high standard. No other singer in history can claim that. I hope you continue your journey with Nightwish!
The lead singer Floor jansen was in 2 other bands before Nightwish After Forever which is Goth Metal / progressive Metal , Revamp was her 2nd and that was HER baby ....she was going thru some stuff at the time and its more of an aggressive metal sound .
There's also her side project Northward, and all the guest appearances, and all the covers. She really gets around.

Welcome to NW Molly Bee, you just met our 6ft Queen Floor Jansen (Dutch) 3rd and current singer of the Finnish Symphonic Metalband NW. She is incredible. 10 Months earlier she came as a substitute for Anette Olzon, who became sick in the middle of a world tour and had to go to the hospital. NW called Floor and she said yes. She had to learn the setlist in 48 hours and did that on the flight from the Netherlands to Salt Lake City, where she joined the band on their way to Seattle for the next concert. GLS wasn't even on the list, but because she loved this song so much, NW put it on the list. The last part of the song the previous singer(s) didn't do, so she made it her own, with as result 10 months later at Wacken 2013 this MASTERPIECE. When she belt so high and you got shivers or goosebumps we call that a FLOORGASM. Congrats with your first one. Being a beautiful young lady who is into some ink, you will love Floor even more in future reactions. Soon after this performance Floor began adding some ink to her arms and hands. When you reach 2018 at Buenos Aires you will see how she looks presently. Great commentary Molly Bee! Tuomas (keys) is the main composer of the music and lyrics for Nightwish. He is highly influenced musically by movie soundtracks and lyrically by poetry. Floor is a highly trained vocalist, having had operatic as well as Musical Theater training.
We will all suggest you stick with the Live performances. Floor has only been with Nightwish since 2012 and many of us prefer to stick with the current version of Nightwish. In 1996 Nightwish began with their 1st vocalist, Tarja Turunen (5 records). She was very operatic most of the time. She was dismissed from the band in 2005 for personal differences. Next came Annette Olzon, who was much more of pop/rock style of a vocalist. She did 2 records and then parted ways with Nightwish. Many of the live song you will experience are songs originally sung by the previous vocalists. However, IMHO I think Floor improves many of them. She is a rare and special breed of vocalist. I like to refer to her as The Dutch Valkyrie queen of symphonic metal. You will be amazed at the variety of styles she can sing at the highest level. Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a soprano with a range of more than three octaves (D3 to F6). When listening to her sing, it is apparent that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a vocal coach herself. It is incredible how she is able to take any song and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. Hi Molly Bee, new subscriber here! You definitely hit the nail on the head with the movie score observation. That is exactly what the composer intended it to model. And the blue lighting during the orchestral intermezzo is definitely a Shakespearean style interpretation of ghosts. The "ghost love" part is only supernatural in a metaphorical sense. The majority of Nightwish's discography (not all of course, but a majority) tend to follow a common lyrical theme throughout the years. Some are very tight diary-like recordings of the composer's reality, while others are more loosely tied, in a storytelling sense, to various views of his own inner thoughts and heart. Ghost Love Score is a part of this general thematic approach. It is definitely a "gothic" tinged romantic tragedy telling the story of a young man's (although written to be sung in a female voice, one is to understand it as the composer/keyboardist's inner story) heart being broken by an unrequited, hoped-for romance with the woman of his dreams. The real woman was and is very much alive and well but was not interested in reciprocating the feelings of love. In this song, he realizes that his love, his infatuation, his obsession was with his imaginary image of the woman, not the real woman herself. In effect he realizes he was in love with a ghost, metaphorically speaking. As the choir sings, "My fall will be for you. My love will be with you. If you be the one to cut me, I will bleed forever," and in the final reprise of the My Fall movement of the score, "My fall will be for you. My love will be with you. You were the one to cut me, so I will bleed forever!" The Nightwish Army welcomes you to the wonderful, and very deep rabbit hole of Nightwish/Floor Jansen/Marco Hietala/Tarja Turunen!
Need to hear more of them too. Fascinating intense song, long but worth every second,those switches between.... are amazing, so well timed ... her incredible beautiful voice,the wall of sound, that final that started with redeem me. Wouldn't surprise me if it's their magnum opus. Hard to surpass.

Yes...at 8 years old, I was listening to Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, then onto Black Sabbath with Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad....and on and on.

This concert was Nightwish’s first production with Floor Jansen as the lead singer. She absolutely killed it here. I would also recommend listening to Phantom of the Opera live by Nightwish. This has the original Nightwish singer Tarja. It’s another incredible live performance.

If my "production" you mean proper live dvd, then yes, I think this was the first with Floor. But this was not the first live show with Floor Jansen. By this point she had been with the band for 9-10 months or something along those lines.

@@MollyBeeReacts They have had two previous singers. Tarja was the first, then next was Annette and Floor is the current singer. The Phantom of the Opera is one of Nightwish’s best in my opinion.

This live concert was only 10 months after Floor Jansen joined the band as their lead singer, so all 15 of these songs at this concert were studio recorded, but with other singers. That is one reason why most of the recommendations will be to stick with later LIVE performances, which will give you the full experience of Nightwish with Floor in the band ( especially this Wacken concert ). You can listen to the original studio recordings or earlier live performances also, to enjoy the other singers style for each of these songs. Nightwish has since recorded a couple studio albums with Floor in 2015 and 2020. The latest of which was just performed as a virtual concert in May of 2021. 👍👍👍
