@Jacques Malan I know what you mean by this. Annette was great, don't get me wrong. Dark Passion Play was still an amazing album in it's own regard. Tarja set some really high standards and was absolutely amazing, however Floor Jansen is so good, she is perfect for the band and brings new life to it. The only thing Anette lacked in her songs was the ability to capture depth and the journey, but she belted out some killer songs. I don't care where you learnt of Nightwish from, or who the first singer you heard from them was, I would just like to welcome you all to the journey and hope you enjoy it as I have :)
@Jacques Malan you know... for the judgments you are passing (assuming you don't write songs and don't appreciate what goes into finishing one) you are exaggerating to make a point. They have but one song of that exceptional length, and it's 24 minutes. Most of what they write is between 5 and 8 minutes long. A few of them are over 10 minutes. This is absolutely normal for symphonic metal and it seems you might lack the exposure to these styles of music to understand that. I loved Anette's time as well and I agree with your comments about her, but their early days they were influence more by power metal, whereas now they have leaned into a heavy influence from classical movie scoring, which is Tuomas's specialty. It became increasingly apparent on the Century Child album that this progression was a natural one for them, so you certainly have had time to warm up to this.
Someone who understands music theory is definitely impressed by Tuomas's ability to compose for this band, and any critiques that come out as complaints are quite simply ignorant ones. Without exception every single master level (or near to) musicians and composer I have spoken with consider him to be among the greats. Nightwish is unique because Tuomas doesn't write their music like a metal song. Perhaps your tastes are better suited for the likes of Kittie, Korn or Metallica. I appreciate you keeping your complaints in Reddit where they might be of better use.

@Jacques Malan Every Nightwish fan should be entitled to their own opinions. When I first discovered Nightwish, I was in high school and Tarja was the only Nightwish singer. High school was when I really started getting deeper into metal, past the Metallica (my favorite band going into high school), Maiden, etc kind of stuff. I heard End of an Era and fell in love with the band. At the time I didn't know anything about the turmoil of the band I just thought it was cool that they were a metal band with not only a female singer, but with a totally different style than I was used to.
As time went on and Anette joined the band I found I didn't care for her vocals as much (I grew to like them, I just didn't back then, I think she's great as well) and only really listened to the Tarja stuff. Later when Floor joined I first heard her after this Wacken show came out and I liked her but in my mind I still didn't like her as much as Tarja. I was close minded about it and didn't give her a completely fair chance at first. Over time I began to realize I liked her more and more, until I realized that I actually liked Floor a lot more than Tarja. I realized that I wasn't willing to be open minded enough to look at her on her own, and though to this day I still love Tarja, I think Floor is a better fit than Tarja ever was. I say this because some fans refuse to shed that close mindedness. You clearly don't seem to be that way, but there are many Tarjaholics out there who absolutely are, and can be extremely toxic and obnoxious to deal with, so you have to understand why many people can be weary of this discussion. Some people have no idea what they're missing and refuse to listen to modern Nightwish at all, which is a huge shame. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's just a shame there aren't more Tarja preferring fans that can be civil like you.

About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The entire Nightwish set from Wacken 2013 is an absolute MASTERPIECE! And this was not even the finale! EVERY song from this set is great - every one! The show opener ("Dark Chest of Wonders") kicks off the set with super high energy. "Storytime" is another journey. "Romanticide" rocks HARD. And the list goes on and on. You can pick literally any song from this set and you will be blown away.

Hi Sabina, new subscriber here. I've watched hundreds of reactors do Ghost Love Score as their first introduction. Mostly all are emotional, "dumbstruck," etc., but I don't think I have ever seen anyone besides you show such a deep, genuine *appreciation* of the composition in such a calm, reserved, and professional way. It was a very refreshing experience to see you react in that way with such open honesty! Don't change a thing! ;) ... Also I must add that I really LOVE your technique of putting your comments as text subtitles instead of talking over the music and pausing too frequently like many others do. True, we all have accepted that some songs have to paused periodically to avoid copyright strikes, but a lot of people interrupt way too often. Your subtitle method is remarkably effective and a breath of fresh air! Looking forward to seeing you react to more Nightwish, to Floor Jansen in her solo performances, and to several other great bands in a similar atmospheric metal category!

Nightwish is an all star cast lead by keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen (who composes 90% or more of the music and lyrics) and fronted by Floor Jansen, who you just saw and is arguably one of the most skilled, most powerful singers in the world. Floor's Wiki Bio
Floor Jansen started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. After After Forever split up she started teaching performing in her own course called Wanna be a Star?!
She used to play the guitar, piano and flute and has completed several years of music studies.
From the age of 16 all during this period she was fronting the the Band Apocalypse (later known as After Forever) in 1997 until they disbanded in 2009. She then did vocal coaching and formed her own band called Revamp which officially broke up in 2016 because of Floor's commitment to Nightwish.
The RockAcademy in the Netherlands is an actual Bachelors degree, conservatory style, but focusing on the rock/pop industry.
I don't think you will ever be fully prepared for a Nightwish song. This is my second concert with you. Thanks again. I think that this is the best Nightwish song to step into the relm. You will find other Nightwish songs to be different, yet equally exciting.

A little bit backstory of the show. The program is made for Dutch TV. The idea behind the show is that they invite 7 vocalist from different genre's and each episode one of them is at the center of attention. The other vocalist will either perform a song from the artist or sing a song that has a special meaning to them. Even though Floor Jansen has toured the world several times over she was relatively unknown in the Netherlands. That changed radically after this show aired. She can literally sing any song in any style she likes.

I also like the way she does it because it's different. But I also like the pausing because then the reactor can say whatever they feel like saying instead if trying to keep it too short.
Also, if you're watching a reactor and complaining that they pause it to talk? They are a reactor. You're watching them more for their reactions than for listening/watching the song. If you just want the song, then just watch that. It doesn't really make sense to complain about that.
I can understand specific complaints, like if someone pauses during a solo or something like that. But to complain that reactors ever pause during a song? Nah.

Welcome to Floor Jansen, the 6' Valkyrie Goddess of Metal. You've heard about 40% of what she can do. I've heard her sing rock, metal, classical aria, country, lullaby, smooth jazz, pop and musical. I've heard her sing in English, Dutch, German, Finnish, Spanish, Italian and Latin. I've heard her do deathgrowls and hold a D6 for 8 seconds. And I've heard her do all those things live on stage. Sure, there are singers who can do any of the things she does better than her, but there's only one who can do all of them and sound great and convincing doing it all.

Haha, you had already been Dimashified and now you have been Floored as well! Floor Jansen is Dutch, she lives in Sweden and is the leadsinger of a Finnish band. Floor left her home country, the Netherlands, when she was asked to replace the previous leadsinger. She had her musical training in modern and in classical music in Amsterdam. In her home country she was catapulted to fame last year, when she performed on the tv show "Beste zangers". In this program professional singers come together and sing songs for eachother that have been composed or sung by or are in another way important to that colleague. It is not a competition. I will send you the link of one of Floor's solo performances on that show that had great coverage on CZcams.

The Nightwish 2013 Wacken concert will forever be one of those concerts like Woodstock, that everyone claims to have attended.
The ‘presence’ on the stage is something else. She definitely fills the space she is in.

This song brings me to joyful tears! If Nightwish ever has a concert near me, I am there. I've been a Nightwish fan for a few years but just heard this wonderful song recently.
To think at this stage she was only a tour singer, soon after accepted into the band as a full time lead singer.

She stepped in october 1st 2012 in Seatle Washington. At first she would only do the rest of the tour. But after a few months the band realised she is the ONE! They allready asked her to be the permanent singer before the summer festivals in 2013 But it was announced in october 2013

I don't know much about singing, and can barely hold a note. But I know what gives me goosebumps. Floor's voice never fails to induce that feeling, and I've listened to this performance a LOT...

Seeing first time a performance of this caliber can be quite overwhelming experience. It was to us too. But this really is one of the best live performances ever. Oh wow Sabina, how your musical life has now changed forever! What a beautiful reaction, I just loved how much you were drawn in instantly. I joined the Nightwish Army some months ago, and I likewise was simply stunned by this performance. Notwithstanding this is a live performance, it must have been absolutely intoxicating to be there, with 82,000 adoring fans. A beautiful song, performed by incredible musicians, and sung by the exquisite, unforgettable, flawless Floor. Thank you for this post. PS I love your joint reactions with Henri. She is very sweet.
Hearing Floor sing is referred to as having a 'Floorgasm' and she made more adult men cry than all divorce lawyers combined. I think you captured it all this being not a song but a journey. And this Wacken open air has some amazing camera work going on. There must be camera people there in every corner capturing the vibe.

Oh you’re gonna have a blast! I wish I hadn’t heard any Nightwish songs yet.. just so I could relive hearing them for the first time. I think that’s why we all like to watch these reactions so much. Living vicariously through first-time reactors!! 😂 and as you’ll discover, you’ll never find a band with more range and with a bigger variety of different songs in different styles. Floor is the soul reason im proud to be Dutch like her, ive been a fan of floor since her own band after forever, that i got introduced to in 2003. she has made a tough journey, but she is home here with nightwish. and this is just a fraction of what she can do. but in an interview she said that this song is her most favorite to sing life. anyways there are so many more song you HAVE to her. you are in for a treat.

1st of all, I've never commented on a CZcams video ever, but you made me feel the need to.
I love watching people react to Nightwish, in a way it gets my rocks off to see "simple bitches" experiencing one of my favourite bands of all time.
So first of all, I'd like to complement you on your ability to let the song take you on a journey, instead of commenting on on how it compares to how you think music should be.
You really caught me by surprize how willing you were to take the Nightwish journey and appreciate it for what it is. I have to admit, it took me listening to a few of their songs to be as accepting of it as you were, but I'm glad I got there.
I believe somewhere along the way, music has lost it's purpose in life to be connecting, meaningful and from the heart - which Nightwish does. They are on a whole new level compared to the current pop music and it brings me great joy seeing others experience for the first time and enjoy it.

I feel like all the faces you made while listening, I make while listening! Squinting, smiling, tilting the head, grinning, nodding, swaying.. yep, that's how you judge a nightwish experience! I've been listening for years, through three lead singers, two bassists, and two drummers, and it never gets old. Never. Great reaction, and the analysis in the end was wonderful too - thank you. No worries about the crush - we all feel that way, I think. She really is mesmerizing, and I can't imagine Nightwish without her, nor her without them, despite my listening to her solo work, and work with previous bands. They just fit together, and yes, take us on a magical journey. Every single time.

Floor Jansen is their third lead singer. She is super talented and "super versatile" is the best word to describe her. She is classically trained. She can do sopranos, she can sing metal of course, pop, operatic singing; you can throw her any song and she can melt your face with her mind blowing voice and singing technics.
You should listen to Nightwish's first lead singer Tarja Turunen. She is a big star. She is one of the pioneers of Nightwish, along side Tuomas, the founder. She is also a classically trained singer, with a dark, operatic voice. She has some unique voice. Maybe you would want to check her out in Nightwish's concert called "End of an Era", Song entitled "Ever Dream".

She has such a mesmerising presence and charisma. Everything from her singing to her movement, mannerisms and facial expressions just draws you in. Usually anyone who hears Floor Jansen sing, almost immediately falls in love with her voice and body language. In an interview, she had said she's an empath and "feels" the songs she performs, which is a direct reflection on what we all feel watching her. The music is always epic and Keyboardist and composer, Tuomas, has been called a Metal Mozart and genius composer. As you hear more of their work, you will understand why. FYI, Floor stands about 6'1" without the 4" heels and is married to Sabaton Drummer, Hannes Van Dahl. She has a very commanding presence on stage and gives you that feeling she's about to lead you into an epic battle. Great Reaction, keep it up on your musical journey!
Hi Sabina, I've watched a few of your reactions (most recently the ones introducing Henrietta to Dimash) but I had no idea you were unfamiliar with Nightwish! As quickly becomes obvious, lead composer Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard) is a genius, each bandmember is a seriously skilful musician but given your interests it's natural for you to initially focus on the lead singer, Floor Jansen. I really can't exaggerate how good a singer she is - she can give mesmerising performances in almost any style. I see you already have plenty of recommendations and I can only enthusiastically support them all. Have fun going down this rabbit hole!

Lovely reaction! You've just uncovered the tip of a very large iceberg here. As great as this song is, GLS really only represents about 10-15% of what they're capable of, as hard as that is to believe. Judging by youtube tags (and your accent), you're dutch? Not all that surprising you've never really heard Floor before, despite the fact that she's Dutch herself. She's been virtually unknown in her native land for most of her career as metal isn't really that big in the Netherlands. This has been mostly remedied this last year due to her appearance on the TV Show Beste Zangers, which is VERY worth a listen because it really showcases her talents and extreme range of style/ability. And no, you're not the only one with a crush on Floor. XD Everybody who listens to her sing, or listens to her talk, or meets her falls in love with her. Despite being one of the most talented singers currently alive on this planet, she's also one of the nicest most down to earth person. I, too, am going to my first Nightwish concert next year and am super excited about it. Keep exploring this band and enjoy the ride!
