@@BrettKollmannhow do football players get such thick necks?
Pat Richard is an absolute freak, even beyond his play as FB. He also functions in ST and as a DE. Absolute beast of a man and I really hope Monken continues to utilize him well.
For sure
One of the most underrated players in the league. I remember the first time I saw him in a game I thought "are they using a sixth lineman?" then i searched his name up and saw fb. I was shocked
100% Dude is ridiculous.
I love it when they get him involved in the passing game. Looks like a wrecking ball running down the field.
*DT, nose guard
10:42 I love that term "positionless football" to describe the 49ers offense. Part of what makes their system so effective is that massive versatility of their skill players like Juszczyk. In their typical 21-personnel package of Juszczyk, Kittle, Aiyuk, Deebo, and now CMC, they combine 2 elite rushers, 4 elite receivers, and 4 elite blockers into the one group, and all 5 of them can at least be some level of threat in all three roles. They can run virtually any play, to anywhere, out of any arrangement of those players.
Kyle is a mastermind.
It almost harkens back to the "total football" concept from the Dutch soccer teams back in the day.
I love when Jennings is in at WR on 3rd down. He's a good possession WR, but he's a great blocker. He's like Heins Ward but bigger when he's blocking.
This is what the future of modern teamsport is. In the end you are better off with players that can play their role very well and can also play on an okayish level in other roles than with worldclass players on their positions who are shit at everything else. This has been a trend in almost all ball games, like basketball, soccer etc... now football is adapting to it as well.
If you like watching that stuff, look at what Arthur Smith could be cooking for the Falcons this season. He has a gang of big time runners, his 2 best receivers are tall and pretty athletic and signed back one of his old fave TEs from years ago in Jonnu Smith who could do some running and pass catching duties. Many of the wide zone wizards and creative run schemers like Stefanski are crafty in utilizing their 'bigger' receivers/runners as blockers. OCs who have access to a running QB probably will have more creative options to use receivers as lead blockers.
Ah the end of the month Brett Kollmann video🔥🔥🔥
At least this one didn't go live at 11:59 PM
@@BrettKollmannto be fair, I don’t think the last one hit the 11:59 deadline 😂
It’s clockwork

Mike Alstott was one of the players I loved watching most in the early 2000s. To see this position being re-embraced is very welcome.
Alstott is the first Full Back fan think of right away. He was the last true Full back in the league and a dam good one
@@JDBass36 Wasn't he their primary rusher, though? That's not what I think about when I think "true fullback." To me, a true fullback, at least by the modern definition (not the 1940s definition where they were the fullback because they were all the way back in the formation) is one that has primarily a blocking role, and that's not really my perception of Alstott.
@@JDBass36 He was more of a larger halfback than fullback tbh. The way he was utilized was more like the bus or Jamal Lewis. His position was just fullback.
I was coached on his film, got his jersey even.
he was basically just used like a fullback, last one i can think of is lorenzo neal, the reason every hb he ever played with got at least 500 to 800 extra yards. i think the 49ers fb has been very good for a while for fb.
I'm a simple man. I see CJ Ham, I click
Especially with the extra neck
My man
You are simple.
Yessir
Good man , only other back that got me the same way is Erick Dickerson
I always figured as defenses went all in on speed and lightweight setups to counter the spread offense, eventually somebody would counter that with brawn and weight and eventually the fullback would be reborn.
Bill Walsh when asked about the most important aspect of his pass offense:
"It's the fullback. The fullback is really the critical part of our passing game, because he's the one that's the most difficult to handle. So you'll see year in, and year out our fullback catch more passes out of anyone in our ball club."
This was a gem of a video, and I appreciate you spotlighting what has become maybe my favorite position on offense even if it's usage has depleted in the last couple of decades. Glad that it might be making a comeback in various new iterations. A lot of people gave Kyle Shanahan venom when he retained Kyle Juszczyk on another contract, but I simply smiled from ear to ear.
Tom Rathman absolutely played a crucial role in Walsh's offense.
@-NFiN8- man people just don't know
As an old school Big 10 three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust fan of I-formation smash mouth football, I am very glad to see a resurgence of the use of the under appreciated fullback!!!
Football at its finest.
After watching Bills chiefs OT game I think something can be said for ball control and not making your D play 100 snaps vs these freak QBs
It’s because teams are realizing, there is still a shortage of high end QBs, so not everyone is going to be able to pass it 70% of plays. Plus with LBs getting smaller, it’s a great time to out physical them in the run game.
@@gooser__43 You and me, borh!
You’re starting to see it in college too.
Im a simple man. I see a fullback breakdown, I click.
I see a tree trunk of a neck I click
I love the fb position and I feel like it is so underutilized
We just aren't as tough as a society as we were in the 90s and 00s. Fullback is one position that would clearly show up,
@@alexjones6190what we are just as tough it has to do with the way offences are ran now
It's basally same thing that happened with tight ends. Bigger players are getting better at running routes and catching balls so are another option on the field from a much larger body; they are no longer just to block. Much like basketball where centers are able to hit 3's.
Also, as linebackers start emphasizing speed too much, now the fullback is able to exploit the size differences now
Highlighting Parker Hesse's ability to influence the Falcons scheme with his blocking ability is such amazing attention to detail.
Same with Keith Smith. Bro's invaluable
Keith Smith is a wasted roster space.
@davidbrazell5179 You spelled Felipe Franks name wrong.
Greg Roman called a fullback screen on 2nd and long last season.
Best OC of all time
Don’t let him cook 🔥🔥🔥

5:18 OMG!! I have been saying this for ages. This is why I adore Jalen Ramsey and L'Jarius Sneed. The most fustrating thing is seeing almost every corner giving up free 1st downs because they miss so many tackles.
In a sense, the running game has come full circle. Back in the early days of football, there wasn’t an exact role for each “back.” Every back had to be able to run the ball, pass the ball, and block the defenders. The game had evolved towards specialization, but now is shifting back towards it, just this time it’s including tight ends and bigger receivers.
would be cool to see taysom hill and lamar jackson clones in the same lineup
Alec Ingold, fullback for the Dolphins and formerly the Raiders, is an absolute athletic freak. He went to my high school, and was the hardest working guy you'd ever meet. First one to practice and film, last one to leave. It didn't matter if you were a starter or a backup or a backup's backup, he was always pushing everyone in the weight room. Some real leadership shit. As a sophomore, he played running back and rushed for more than 1000 yards and 22 touchdowns. He moved to quarterback as a junior, and still was elite. He passed for 1427 yards and 13 scores, adding 860 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He added even more as a senior, and we outscored teams by an average of 40 points his senior year, mainly through Ingold. He went to Wisconsin, got moved to fullback, bulked up like 40 pounds, and not only excelled at running like in high school, but was a great blocker too. He went undrafted in 2019, yet made the Raiders roster by the season. This is his 5th season in the NFL, and I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to play in the league for a few more years, because I know how hard the dude works firsthand.
Delanie Walker is the perfect player for this role. Too bad he already came and went.
The titans have a te they drafted last year that has this type of skill set
@@rileyjeffery3384 Yeah Chig is that guy now which before it was Jonnu Smith (with Arthur Smith as the OC).
And then there's Andy Reid, who won't be using a fullback this year for the first time ever.
I have always loved the fullback position and thought the position was not used to its full potential to me they are shorter tight ends also I have seen fullbacks more versatile then full time rbs
You had me rolling with the Brian Cushing statement!!!🤣🤣🤣
I’ll never forget my d end in front of me first play got “read” like a mf turned around to our sideline and screamed “ they’re running read” about 4 times before our dc said “I know Dylan” baffled another school could run advanced concepts. They ran it twice with no success. We ran naked read about 10 times that game as we did every game let alone half back lead read or trap read.
As a 225lb 6’0 full back/olb ran a 4.6 40 In high school i can personal tell you it’s really really fun taking mfs heads off on trap blocks and anything outside zone. We had a formation called “fat train” with two off set full backs one back and the qb in pistol. Always y’all knew wtf was coming when you saw the starting and back up full back jog on the field, still couldn’t stop basic concepts. Running trap from the back field also is probably one of the best things, and most fun for big fella who can move.
i fucking love the full back position
This is getting sexual
I love that one of your lights reflects in the windows and just looks like the death star in the sky behind you
L E T S GOOOO Love seeing Fullbacks get their due! Kyle Juszczyk for the Niners is so nice!
Juuuuuuuuiiiiiccccceeeee!!!!
The fullback is the lead blocker for your running back and an extra blocker in the passing game.
I am so utterly and absolutely perplexed by this comment. I’ve been fixated on it for nearly five minutes now, just getting my head around the fact that it exists.
Sent this video to my dad cause we both love football. He said this is one of the best videos he’s ever seen that explains the fullback position. Very well done 👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's fun to see the FB be reinvented. On some level, I think that there's a chance that you end up with a truly versatile team where it's 5 OLs and 6 skill players. Basically, think about what would happen if you loaded up with 6 clones of Taysom Hill. Any one of them can line up at any position at any given time and be effective. That is a terrifying proposition.
Haha I love the thumbnail. That’s the typical build when I think of full backs, especially the ones from the 90s and early 2000s
6:25
A lot of those slow white fullbacks have really good hands. Lol. They just never get a chance.
This man always comes in clutch when I’m looking for something to watch with my lunch or dinner
This channel really helps me rediscover my love of football. Cheers
Seeing my Broncos use Andrew Beck brought a tear to my eyes, the onehanded catch he got was truly beautiful

Excellent vid. I am happy to see more teams bringing back the fullback position. It is a good move. I like seeing good blocking.
You kick ass Brett. This topic and overall video is badass. I remember in highschool football, certain weeks we’d have linebackers on our team playing tight end just so we could have 3 beefy tight ends to run the ball against a tough d-line. Keep up the good work man
Your videos are so interesting... Just a big thanks ! What you do is truly great and as a french guy you allow me to know the game in ways that i wouldnt have otherwise so just thanks
Great insights on the resurgence of this 'role'. I was aware of Skowronek's role with the Rams and how McVay will continue to ride out 11 personnel. But the point you made with the linebackers being smaller than they were years before on average (the off-ball ones excel in coverage roles) made all the more sense why the role can be more lenient in the modern game. And the brand of positionless football becomes even more potent more guys can be a threat to run and catch on offense.
Great vid as per usual. I be waiting very impatiently for the season to start
Glad to see Brett got his end of month ad read video in
I have never felt so called out in an ad read lol
We love seeing CJ Ham in the thumbnail #skol
Brett I’m drunk rn but i’m using this video as a way to fall asleep. But I love this video this you’re talking about full back, which i played thru hs
Always love ur content. Top shelf.
Noticed the Hawks play with that concept using Parkinson or Dissly lined up at FB. Worked well esp on play action sneaking one of the big boys into the flats. I agree with you, I think we’ll see a lot more of that in the coming years.
Having backs, TEs and WRs play fullback will be the way to go since it gives the play caller more flexibility than having a designated FB (freak exceptions aside, of course). No doubt man, great stuff 👌
Tom Adamo the greatest Fullback ever iykyk
i felt called out with the intro to that ad read lmao
Love the subject matter, love seeing stuff focusing on underrated positions like fullback. But most of all as a Chiefs fan, I'm happy you pronounced Khalen Saunders right. I foresee good things for him in New Orleans and it hurts me a little to hear announcers call him "Kaylen".
The food sponsor comment was directed right at me😂 I just got off work and haven't ate breakfast yet but don't know what I want
Finally!! I'm a big fan of using a fullback. You really can open up the offense with a good fullback

I think the videography really took a big step forward today and I like it.
Like clockwork Brett posts a video on the last day of the month 😂
Used to run split backs when I was in junior high. We could run, block, or run routes in any direction, at any time. Coach would line us up in either spot to mess with people. Fullback is such a fun position to play. Crack skulls, tote the rock, and catch passes.
I’m so glad CJ Ham is the thumbnail. He’s one of my favorite players
4:19 i must say this trap block design was the first time ive seen it... very very interesting run play design
CJ Ham was my student teacher in my 5th grade gym class
Yesss pride of augustana and Duluth MN. The versatile do it all sludge hammer.
Hey Bret, im glad you found Wigle Whiskey. I live in Pittsburgh and love that place and love the show. Fyi it's pronounced like the kids tv show "The Wiggles". I hope you made it to the distillery right in the strip district. If you haven't I encourage you to make the trip next time you're in Pittsburgh.
I love that trap play from the Patriots. What a creative way to bring back an old concept in a fresh way.
I wonder if the personnel pendulum swings back the other way in favor of bigger linebackers that put small fullbacks at a disadvantage.
Amazing video brett
Great video!! Ben Skrownek is a beast!! Rams fans call him “The Skow Plow”
The Vikings bringing back Ham and signing Oliver has me salivating.
Facts
Marcel Reece from the 08-16 Raiders is the perfect example of versatility. Played wideout at Washington, when he came to Oakland, they converted him to FB but also used at RB, WR and TE, plus special teams. Matchup Nightmare.
Been calling for this for years. Always seemed the obvious choice on how to evolve play again, after the patriots brought in tight ends as the go to weapons on pass plays. Fullbacks should be an essential part of the game as blockers pass receivers from the back field and running plays.
Who’s the other three people watching this video that the ad was meant for. Dude weirdly nailed my eating habits
I remember watching Cory Schlessinger and Tommy Vardell blocking for Barry Sanders to get him to 2053 yards. Busting facemasks. Good stuff.
Love it man!!

I love everything you make.... but this thumbnail is art. It will be in museums after you're dead and for centuries after.
My favorite brett video shout out the fullbacks out there. fullbacks are so old theyre new
Don’t need fbs when you’ve got receivers griddying on routes because they’re untouchable by the rules
I've always been a Bears fan, but I remember Mike Alstott being one of my absolute favorite players in the league back in the early 00's when I was a kid. I still remember that Bucs Super Bowl in 02.
Chris Thompson for Redskins was an effective full-back. He was my favourite player.
He was a great 3rd down pass catcher
Everything Old is New Again. Joe Gibbs in the 80's used "H-Backs," Tight Ends in the Fullback position doing both Fullback and Tight End duties, so he could use Joe Riggins, a Fullback who was also the Redskins' best ball carrier, as a massive Halfback. Mike Shanahan would use Tight Ends the same way to put an extra blocker in the backfield for RGIII during both pass and option plays, so it makes sense that other coaches in the Shanahan Coaching Tree such as Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay also use variations on the concept.
Great video. But no breakdowns on the leagues top rusher Josh Jacobs with Jakob Johnson as FB?
I came for CJ ham, was sad when I didn’t see him analyzed.
