Maybe you’ve heard of a concept called “radical honesty,” where you basically tell people what you’re thinking no matter what, make no apologies, and say you’re being “authentic” - even though it usually makes you look like a jerk. Today, we’ll find a better balance between honesty and authenticity in our discussion with Kim Scott, author of Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity.
In this episode, we’ll hear about how Kim found out what her boss really thought of her and her work when he accidentally CCed her on an email to her colleagues and how her response to this professional gaffe can help us in our own careers. We’ll also learn why most of us actually resist being honest with others around us - and why this is actually a disservice to the company, to that person, and to ourselves. We’ll also discover how we can be radically candid with people who are not only our subordinates, but also those who might be above us in the hierarchy. The formula and techniques we’ll hear about today will help us view honesty, candor, and empathy in a totally different way.
What We Discuss with Kim Scott:
⭐️ How the best lessons about management can be learned from our worst bosses.
⭐️ Why the worst bosses aren’t necessarily the worst people in the world, and how relating to them as human beings makes challenging their bad decisions easier.
⭐️ How then-Google executive Sheryl Sandberg changed an important aspect of Kim’s long-term career potential by caring personally, but challenging directly when spotting room for improvement.
⭐️ The four quadrants of the Radical Candor framework.
⭐️ How conscientious bosses can avoid promoting ruinous empathy, manipulative insincerity, and obnoxious aggression.
    ⭐️ And much more…

I just had a business CEO round table meeting where we were discussing this topic. I shared this episode with everyone afterwards. Thanks for the great interview.

@@JordanHarbingerShow Yes I do ... you and I normally communicate via email. Without drive time lately, I've gotten behind on the show. But I comb through the titles and pick out topics that are helpful to me and friends.

This is a very interesting video… it can be bitter sweet… I think that although the intention of a “ positive feedback “ was done with a good intention… we also must be careful on what vocabulary we use… “ stupid” can mean nothing to some.. but don’t forget that nowadays we have a lot of diversity in every company, and there are words that can be very offensive to some. Best thing to do is to know your team, their background and always find a way to motivate them in a very professional and attentive way.

Great interview! This is my first time watching one on CZcams thanks to that bit you said at the end of the podcast haha. It definitely worked to get me here.
I notice the image is very overexposed which is common with such a well lit space like this. It makes it hard to appreciate the great view. If I may, I have some suggestions that will help for next time you have a big open window with sunlight pouring in like this:
    1. Get some powerful lights in the front to match. Then you can bump down that exposure in camera so you don’t have all of those overexposed spaces and really enjoy that view!
    2. If there are no lights available, an ND filter for the camera lens will act like a pair of sunglasses 😎.
    3. No matter what, always “expose to the right” which means turn down the exposure in camera until nothing is over exposed. You would much rather be underexposed than overexposed because you can always bump up the shadows in post, but you can’t retrieve lost data from blown out highlights.
Aside from that, I loved episode, Jordan! Keep doing an awesome job 😁
