  • Interview with former members of "Team Billy" - Steve Kleisath, Carlos Pineiro, and David Race. We talk Donkey Kong, how they met Billy Mitchell, how they got involved in the score dispute, their attempts to examine the dispute evidence in his defense, and their inevitable discovery of the truth.
(Apologies to David for cutting him off mid-goodbye.)
    Interview conducted November 14, 2020.
For more on this topic, check out my one-on-one written interview with Steve Kleisath over at Donkey Kong Forum: donkeykongforum.net/index.php?...
Correction: In this interview, David recalls entertaining the notion that Billy was employing gaslighting techniques on him as early as August 2018. However, after this was published, David reviewed his notes and found that he had actually started pondering the question even earlier in May 2018, less than one month after the conclusion of the TG dispute.

48:43 Small correction about laptop output capabilities. Laptops of late 1990s and sometime until 2005 or so had S-video output (besides VGA). These were quite common on Pentium II, III, IV and Pentium M with IBM ThinkPad and Dell Latitude and Inspiron series. Many other brands probably had it too (I've seen it on Acer as well). Latitude and ThinkPad were business laptops, so probably had it for in-office presentation purposes. Google some images of laptops such as Dell CPi, CPx, C600, C640, D600, D800; IBM ThinkPad T30, etc.
I did plenty of work with all these laptops over the years... and I still have some of them here somewhere lol.
Technically, with S-Video you can record to VHS, but only more expensive VCRs had S-Video in/out. Even if you can do this, I don't see how a digital signal changed to analog would change the transitions to match MAME ones (assuming the initial signal came from a cabinet).
The fact that Robert didn't know that you could use S-Video out from a laptop to VCR tells that he did not use a laptop to output anything (or someone did this later). It's a simple thing to remember, if you know this in the first place.

One thing I don't think I've heard (so far, at least) is WHY the finger girder exists. I might be able to shed some light on that. I believe it's an incorrect amount of memory being emulated by MAME. Basically, the way they would draw the screen is they would create a screen buffer where they draw a bunch of tiles into memory - then when the memory is full, they'll dump all of that to the screen, free up the memory, and start drawing again. This happens once a frame until the screen is completely drawn. So they must have programmed DK to where it reads and fills up the available RAM instead of assuming a certain amount is available. If MAME is off by a single byte, you might get more or less of the screen drawn at once. I don't know for certain that this is why we get the finger girder, but it's one possibility.

To me, I think if Billy is supposedly a top tier player, he needs to come out and play live over and over to prove to everyone he IS the best of the best. Why didn’t come out and crush Steve Weibe live in Donkey Kong when Steve challenged him? Steve Weibe is a true champion.

there would have been some ways to output to composite from a computer at the time, but the output would usually have been crap and you would definitely remember what you did to make it look good, like to make the computer output something not something scaled down by the video card so you'd get a good output. one such way would've been a dxr2 card(a dvd decoder card that does composite/svideo output as well as overlaying on a vga signal with a patch cable going to it) with some community software that let you output any video file that was available at the time. it would look pretty good that way, good enough that it would look like you played off a dvd with a dvd player. you could excellent image quality to a vhs of whatever .avi or mpeg files if you played off an original modded xbox too.
of course there was professional equipment to do the same that was used in the av industry making it a non issue from a file.
to play a mame out to make it look as close to arcade on vhs you could do that from dos days even by with a similar 2 bit converter and a vga card that would play ball to be set to the right output hz from dos or linux to do rgb from. the kind of people used for running mame in an arcade cabinet back in the day with the arcade monitors. you wouldn't just do it by accident and it would be pretty obvious there was a computer in the cabinet.

I would suggest splitting this full interview into multiple 5-15 minute clips that you can post over a few weeks. Give them tasteful but CZcams friendly titles (ie. clickbait, but not so unsubtle that people are put off), like "Three of Billy Mitchell's biggest defenders realized he was LYING the whole time." @jimmysp4des229 Před 9 měsíci +3

@sydtopia1 no, it is that simple, unless the arcade board was damaged or altered, there is no way the game loads with fingers like mame.

@@jimmysp4des229 I don't think you understand how court works. You have a dumb jury that you need to convince this stuff. You have Billy's tape way the girder finger is not on every transition, you have him show evidence of an arcade machine doing something similar on some crap copy where it is arguable where it came from. It is not quite that similar, there are way to many variables. If you don't believe me, look at the OJ case.

    • @sydtopia1

@kevinkerr7379 Well that is a big leap there. You assumed a lot and made some big conclusions. The girder finger can be achieved in Mane by changing the refresh rate or CPU rate. There is a dispute if the tapes were Billy's or not. I don't think anyone who understands what is going to say that Billy used Mame. Only that based on the evidence it appears an emulator was used rather than real hardware would be a much safer conclusions. There are other emulators.
