- Wow, this trip was hot. The temperature on the streets and beaches was ridiculous at times, and the light was harsh and contrasty. I usually get some interesting pictures in Bournemouth, and this trip was no exception, but that heat...
My style of street photography has evolved over the years from the 'sit and wait for something to happen' approach that I employed for so many years to the reactionary straight-from-the-hip style that I use today. I blame Raymond Depardon for that. His book 'Manhattan Out' was a light-bulb moment in my career :)

I remember this so clearly as a young man of 18 with his first camera (a Canon FTb, 50mm f1.8 lens and first ever rolls of Ektachrome X. Autumn and winter of 1971. Afternoons with the sun slowly westering and the glinting waves teasing tourists feet, shooting from Boscomb Pier from almost exactly that place in your video. I'm 69 now and my first camera is long gone, but like a first love it opened me up to a new world, new feelings, new possibilities, new disappointments. As an American who had never traveled anywhere, being alone with my camera gave me a quiet confidence to explore that has followed me to hundreds of places and thousands of memories. How many rolls does a photographer shoot in a lifetime? Does one know when you are on your last roll? One of my first rolls was here, this very beach. I remember taking a picture in the chill of a bright winters day of a mother and child hand in hand walking West toward the sun. I took the picture then turned and made my slow journey through Life to where I am now in the Pacific Northwest. I wonder where they ended up? Such nostalgia. The power of a still photograph. Thank you for making me young again, if for just a few moments.

I often take a trip down to Bournemouth for some Street with my Leica. Boscombe Pier is a great spot as you showed in this video. Liked that shot very much.

I often wonder if the people in POV type vids actually get to watch the video and feel mightily brassed off cause you walked past them and didn't take their pic. Great video mate cracking selection of shots.
Absolutely mate, the "Princess Diana affect" and subsequent perception of photographers, coupled with the lunacy around privacy and paranoia about every male over the age of about 21 being a paedophile has made the type of photography seen in Martin Parrs work 'Brighton Beach' nigh on impossible. I had a camera smashed into my face and called a paedophile for taking pictures of cars in an underground car park! I've had kids come up to me in playing field when I've taken pictures of landscapes with the kids in a wide angle shot 200 yards away demanding that I delete the pictures - again calling me a paedophile. The shot of the girl in the bikini - your taking your life in your own hands there if any spots you shooting that in my opinion and the same with any shot that includes kids within 10 yards of yourself.
yeah I just watched a vid by the RealSirRobin some bloke got rarked up in a Melbourne park, pretty crazy times, gotta have your wits about you and just go by instinct. @@someblokecalleddave1

Very nice work.
I'm thinking about widening the field of view in my photos.
There's a thing that I like of this 21mm work, the subjects stand out because the background and middle ground go back.
So during a street scene you may isolate the subject more and create a unique opportunity. I'll work on it and watch all of your videos.

Just watched this video again. I'm curious though. Looks like a lot of 'from the hip' images. Since you zone focus, what exposure metering mode do you use to ensure a correct exposure? Field with a little exp. compensation? Also, what shutter speed do you prefer for your walks?
Yes, there are a lot of times where I work instinctively, and where there just isn't the time to raise the camera to my eye.
There is only one metering mode on a Leica M9-P, which is a modern centre-weighted pattern. If I was using a camera with other modes available, I would stick to a multi-zone pattern. I definitely wouldn't use something like spot metering.
There is no exposure compensation as the M9 files are pretty robust in terms of highlight and shadow rendition.
If I'm walking past people, then I like to be around 1/500th sec shutter speed as I'm in motion and often the subject is. If I'm walking towards the subject, I can get away with 1/250th as the movement isn't so pronounced.

Was this with the M10M? I couldn’t quite see the camera, but I’m thinking maybe not…one shot showed writing on top..if not, what camera was it?
Which 21 mm lens? Was it rangefinder coupled?
I’m guessing you had the lens zone focused? Can you tell your settings? I’ve been trying to set zone focus, so I can just run and gun shoot only having to think about composure, but none of my experiments so far have come out very sharp. I’m trying with M10M, with voigtlander 35mm f2 and the voigtlander 50mm APO…and just never seems to give me any crisp shots…any advice greatly appreciated!!Thank you in advance,

The camera is an M9-P with the 21 Elmarit-M ASPH. Focus set to either 6 feet or 12 feet depending on the situation. Aperture set to f5.6 usually. F8 if it’s very bright.
I have a video coming up where I use a 35mm and zone focus. It takes some practice but it’s very worthwhile.

And subject choice...especially multiple points of action and focus in wide angle... very geometric..and ofcourse foreground and background... tilted angles... shot from the waist zonal focus... pointing at the sky !!! .... lighting fast reflexes...im a small fan....about me...i did 3 solo exhibitions... been out of touch for a while...so this is inspiring to get my mojo flowing.

Hi Jeff. Really interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Do you find you need to crop much when shooting from the hip like that? Did you try any images in colour or do you go into the day with a 100% B&W mindset/monochrome camera? Did you stop for a 99 at any point? Thanks in advance and all the best.
Hi Joe. I don’t crop much at all. Shooting with a 21mm I want that feeling of space and distortion. Cropping would ruin the reason for using the lens.
Most of my work is monochrome. So I tend to think in terms of b/w rather than colour when shooting. I don’t have a Monochrom, so everything starts in colour which gives me some flexibility when processing. Sarah has the Monochrom.
No I didn’t stop for a 99 - I can’t eat that crap 🤢

Regarding the colour, I found it interesting how you weren’t hooked into playing with those blues. Especially the blue panelling on the pier with the blue skies. I would have spent ages going down that rabbit hole probably with very little success.

It’s the original F-2. I’ve had it for years. I still haven’t found anything better and I must have 20+ bags (I should get rid of a few!!)

With all respect, but what is the meaning of your photographs? What does they mean to you and what is the story they should tell?
I’m not sure I understand the question. Does a photograph need to have a story? Do they have to have a meaning? Why can’t they exist as something interesting to look at or as an expression of how someone sees the world?

Are you shooting from the hip without people knowing you are taking their photo
Yes I am. You have to shoot low down with a 21mm as the distortion is too great to use at eye level. I’m too old to keep bending my knees so I spent a lot of time working out angles and framing without looking through the camera. Some people think it’s “cheating” but those people generally haven’t a clue about street photography.
