In science there is a whole school of thought that says the act of measuring something changes the nature of the thing itself. For me, the old falling-down house is a much more interesting subject than a new, pristine mansion. And when it comes to people, the ones who carry the mark of a lot of hard miles are MUCH more interesting to shoot. But I have always been aware that I have to be so careful to be respectful. That's not just virtue signalling - I have seen pain on the face of individuals who I've photographed. And I have moved on without snapping a shot so many times because I didn't think I could avoid that. But your point (I think) is that when people know that the camera is pointed at them, they automatically alter the behavior that reveals personality. I've been doing this a long time, and I have to admit that I never resorted to shooting from the hip. That seems kind of silly after watching this video, but that's life. Guess what I'll be doing next.

I've shot a bunch of weddings, sports for years, wildlife with long lenses and landscape with wide lenses. if anyone is telling you not to shoot from the hip then tell them to fuck all the way off. A camera is a device that captures moments in time. If someone is gatekeeping the manner in which you capture moments in time, then they literally are not worth your time.

About the action of "chimping". I understand what you're getting at although I have to disagree that you should not do it. My reasoning is that something might be accidentally changed. That could provide you with a totally trash photo. Once in a while, a simple check, "Chimp", concerning the quality of the photo can provide you without a totally ruined day of shooting. This comes from when I had my camera hanging on my side and I walked around looking for a restaurant then grabbed my camera only to find that one of the controls had accidentally rubbed on me and changed the setting.

Pretty sure lots of street photographers from the film days shot from the hip, people who used Rollieflex, Bronica's etc. I like to use a Nikon D6500 from the hip because it has a flippy screen and I can actually frame my shots while looking down at my camera and not through the viewfinder. I can also set my screen to black and white and get a good idea of the tonal range. I never listen to the so-called purists.
