  • The Lava U is a well-rounded instrument that is made from a mixture of polycarbonate and carbon fiber, has an amazon acoustic effects system, and an out-of-this-world case.
This review looks at the Lava U Concert Ukulele in great detail.

I bought a Lava U concert, expecting it to have a softer, darker sound. It does. But when I plug it into my Fishman Loudbox Mini, WOW! It comes alive in all ranges. BTW, don't leave the cable plugged in to the uke when you are not playing it. The amp comes on automatically when it senses a cable plugged in. I drained the battery until I saw the light come on when the cable gets plugged in. I also got the proprietary strap for $59 on Amazon. It's expensive but when you sling it over your left shoulder, which is the recommended way to wear it, the uke is nicely balanced and very comfortable to play. All in all, I love it. With a nice amp, it's a great performance setup. Regarding the space case, it's in the closet. But the uke fits nicely in my Magic Fluke gig bag. It's a bit snug, so the tenor probably won't fit.

Thanks so much for your post. I wish they sold Lava U gig bags separately! They have bags for a new model that was recently released (Danielle Ate the Sandwich did a review of one), and it would be nice if they could make a "plain" gig bag available to others who own one!

Great and thorough review. I was really interested in this ukulele when it was announced. Of course I love all strange and unusual ukes.
I’m torn when it comes to the case. It looks awesome, but it is probably a little too bold for me. Plus carry it around all day doesn’t seem fun. Backpack straps would make it much nicer to carry.

It's a really unique ukulele. I'm torn about the case, too. I love it, but it just isn't practical.

Great review. I love my blue tenor lava u. It is a great product.

Thanks. And thanks for watching the 30+ minutes of information. What’s really exciting to me is that in talking with the company representative, they learned a lot about making a ukulele and how it was different, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Lava U 2 in the future that would address the very picky issues that I brought up...including continuing to engineer the sound-perhaps even to add the high frequency shimmer that I (personally) am missing. I also wish it was $50 cheaper...maybe that can happen over time and as production costs are covered. Meanwhile, we’re seeing prices of ukuleles jump all over the market-with ukuleles that were underpriced. When an entry level laminate is $75, that makes a package like the Lava U even seem more affordable.
Sorry to ramble on about it...I just have so many thoughts as it comes to this ukulele. It’s very, very good.

I intend to buy a Lava U but am uncertain which size to get, tenor or concert? Will one be easier to play for a beginner than the other? My wife and I both play and we both have relatively small hands. We have a tenor Fluke and a concert Flea from Magic Fluke but since the Lava U seems to play differently, I would like your opinion on the differences in playing the concert and tenor Lava U's. Thanks and I really like your in-depth and detailed reviews.

Thanks for the kind comments. As you know, I have the concert, as that is the scale I most often play. If you find the Concert Magic Fluke to be a little bit of a stretch for you, then get the concert. The Magic Fluke one of the widest "feeling" ukuleles that I own. So the concert would be smaller than that.
With the Lava U, I'd make sure to order from a store that allows returns. You will either love it, or you won't...and $400 is too much to spend on a ukulele you just don't love. I just sold my Ortega Hydra for a huge loss (more than market value) because I just didn't love it, and it wasn't moving, and I was ready to move on with my life from that instrument.
And that's not saying that you're not going to love it. I would also plan to buy a gig bag of some sort...maybe one of the nice Kala gig bags like this one from Sweetwater (not a referral link) www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TSUBCon--kala-transit-series-ukulele-bag-concert.
The space case is really cool, but it is not very ideal as a case for traveling with.

@@UkeStuff Thanks for the quick and thoughtful reply. I live in Mexico and, unfortunately, the only source I have found that ships here is Amazon and they have a no-return policy on the Lava U. So it's all or nothing from Amazon. This would be our fourth ukulele ... the two Magic Fluke ukes and a Kala Joe Brown soprano model. I'm not as concerned with the tone as I am the playability. I have arthritis in my left thumb that makes it difficult to press hard on the neck when chording so my primary concern is how easy it is to chord on the neck. Thanks for the reference to the gig bag. I, too, am not fond of the space case so I would need to get something else.

3 years later and this ukulele continues to be the most overpriced plastic ukulele available. Looks are subjective. I like the looks. I hate the stupidity of a proprietary strap. I hate the space case that will get you robbed and/or get scratched once and ruined. And, I hate the gadget sound system included. The sound to me is just okay. A bit too much like a dark plastic ukulele. Different strings might help. If you must have a plastic ukulele and want something that sounds good you might try an Enya or the Populele. Populele is the best sounding(to me) plastic ukulele I've played. Unfortunately, it's not available without the light up fret board. Cool looking uke. Sounds okay. Way too expensive. Lava uke value is about $119. It would be worth $149 if it included a good gig bag. But it's priced currently on sale at $199 in Dec 2023.

Excellent comments. The price is improving; I let mine go some time ago. I still need to review a 2nd generation Populele (had the first).

    Nice toy...but still à toy😏

I wouldn't say "fragile," and it certainly isn't a toy. However, I can't disagree with your other thoughts!

@@UkeStuff lot of solidity problems...go check the one star advices on Amazon 😏
And the price of the exclusive strap is just an insult to the uke players...maybe not a toy, but certainly not a true musical instrument, just marketing 😉

    • @UkeStuff

I never take Amazon reviews too seriously. Some people really love these. I very much prefer the Enya Nova...and when it comes to electronics, the Flight Soundwave. As for the strap price...that is insane.

@@UkeStuff i totaly agree with u...the nova is good (Enya is an awesome brand) and the Soundwave of Flight is far better than the Lava...

How is it fragile if it’s made out of carbon fiber
