Great video. I’m an apprentice. I remember buying shitty tattoo kits from amazon when I first set out before my apprenticeship. Then I bought myself a bishop rotary wand. I’m so in love with it. Helps learning with a great machine. I’ve learned soooo much from being at the studio and having a mentor. Please guys don’t learn from CZcams! It helps but alongside an actual apprenticeship. Good luck

    great videos!
i am from germany and i really love tattoos till i can remember. i started tattooing this year and i really get better and better, the internet is really full of tons of informatins since a few years, its really great. a apprenticeship whould be great, but at my city all the good studios want much money for an apprenticeship. and i think to learn it myself can be more effective than going to work and going to the studio where i only can look other artists working, and then practice at home. i have 80% of my left arm tattooed, my whole neck outlined and a few smaller things on my fingers. i really love tattoos and know how they have to look. i have made about 25 tattoos yet, my outlines are good but not perfect yet, but shading and colouring goes in great, and i keep lerning after every tattoo. i love traditional and neotraditional tattoos, but whould love to master all kinds of tattoos styles before choosing one forever. your videos are really helpful, and you are really funny guys haha your making the way easier.
one small question: most people use 0.35 mags for colourwork and 0.30 for realistic shading, but i really like 0.30 because its really smooth and i got used to is, is it wrong to use 0.30 for traditional tattoo colouring? maybe dont getting the thicker ink packed in so easy with 0.30 instead of 0.35, or is it just preference without big differences in packing or healing?
    thanks

I started tattooing with a homemade machine, then my mom walked in on me tattooing myself with it, was supportive (to my surprise) then bought me a coil liner and shader power supply kit off amazon (it wasnt great and i bought new ink and needles and tubes) and eventually bought another nicer machine. now ive been doing it for a year. I guess im a shitty scratcher but id say im not awful and people keep asking me for work.

If you guys could do a advanced tips n tricks that would be awesome!! I know many shop artists who can use improvement, but some of them still tattooing the same way as when they started, tips on tattooing off the tip of the needle vs riding the tube would be great, smooth black and grey tips, for coils machines and rotary....Side note, I just picked up a critical cx2 power supply today and all my machines now run beautifully on it, have been using off brand hurricane for last 3 years and always had to retune my machines, now I know it was the cheap power supply, not my machines, on the hurricane I always had erratic stl readings, on new critical cx2 they all read 0 stl, less skips, they run smoother and have a wider voltage range i can run my machines at without them sputtering, have not done a tattoo with new power supply yet just hooked up machines n so far am impressed, just goes to show you gotta spend good money to get quality stuff if you want your stuff to work right..sorry for rant

+James Johnson on such a specific instruction videos you can find videos tattooists doing them. Our idea is to show basics to avoid major errors and all the technical learning should be under supervision of someone who knows what they are doing. There are too many things that everything depends on like - your style of tattooing, your setup, what are you comfortable with, what your skill level is etc.
About Critical power supply - congrats... it's a very good piece of gear

I'm thinking about becoming a tattoo artist. I was thinking of practicing on fruit for a while and getting an apprenticeship. It might be safer to buy from a reputable company, rather than ebay, and check reviews from different sources. However I heard that professionally handmade ones have more care put into them.

Yeah I agree with apprenticeships! I always asked questions when getting tattoos, gained knowledge every time I left a tattoo session. One guy helped and gave so much advice and tips. When I reached out again, he was telling me apprenticeship was $15,000! And he lived in a nearby state, 2hrs away, and he'd mentor me when he comes to my state to tattoo. I declined. How am I gonna pay $15k for a part-time apprenticeship. Haha no thanks. He ghosted me and never messaged back. All about the money for him.

what do you think of layering tattoos as a new tattoor? color is still something i dont feel ready to tackle but I have done 5 on myself, including with my non dominant hand. The pain is a little distracting when using a rotary 9RL so all I can focus on is completing the line. So for when the skin heals 2 weeks later I can hand poke in and fix lines, and add shading.
Am I a gigantic pu**y for not learning coils, or how to shade with a wand machine?

Tip: It's important to be approachable. Sometimes the more an artist knows, the more cockey they tend to get.. (which in turn makes you less "approachable"). Ya feel me??? Don't get me wrong, I love learning from you guys. Your both wonderful artists... But, sometimes it's hard to stomach the personality you tend to portray.. Not everyone knows what you Now know, so when teaching them, if I were you, I'd lose the laughter... If anything. I'm just saying guys... No disrespect intended.

Any tip to start? What can be and easy tattoo for start? how much money should I spend in my first machine?

    • @TattooShopTalk
      @TattooShopTalk  Před 6 lety +2

+Javier Fernández To start I would recommend to go around tattoo shops and get apprenticeship. Start with drawing build portfolio see how that goes.
As a tattoo ignorant style would work to understand what is going on but blackwork is not easy in any size if you want to look solid. I would still recommend to also copy some oldschool classics or something where you can backtrack what you are doing and how because in ignorant style if you mess up line or collor over a line it still looks alright. Letters are good - there are some artists doing mostly lettering tattoos and you can clearly see if there is anything wrong.
We have another video on how to choose tattoo machines - check that.

Once again watching and commenting on an old as hell video. But he mentioned Miami Ink lol. What is your guys professional opinion on these “Tattoo” shows. Like stupid ass Ink Master and all those “Ink” shows. And like that terrible ass tattoo MTV show where the people pick out other peoples stupid horrible tattoos and shit. Me personally I hate all these shows. I feel like it’s making a mockery of the culture. Like ink master actually does have super good reputable artist on there, but then they make them into these ridiculous characters and have them act just ridiculous. I rather watch like a legit tattooers vlog or something like this.
