How to Fuel Inject Your Willys L134 With a Holley Sniper

  • This is an extremely detailed installation of the new Holley Sniper Autolite 1100 onto my Willys Jeep. I compare the differences between the Carter WO, YF and Sniper. Then showcase my adapter, linkages, fuel system, and wiring to make it a turn-key setup. It's a pretty straightforward install.
    A complete parts list for my setup is shown at the end of the video. As this is probably the first Sniper 1100 ever installed on an L134, I was flying blind without any reference. There could be better options for adaptation - but this is what I came up with.

    That little metal "V" is a turbulence inducing device. Those old engines (flat head 4 bangers), had small valves and small ports in order to keep air velocity up in a low reving engine. In areas of the intake that had large area, (i.e. the intake plenum), air velocity slowed, causing the fuel to settle or "pool". That device was intended to induce "swirl" or "turbulence" into the incoming fuel and air mixture, thoroughly mixing fuel and air, so all cylinders got a balanced fuel air mixture, (no Lean and no Rich cylinders).

    Going to rewatch the part about the distributer; I'm considering this system on my F head on a stock m38a1 jeep. I want to keep the 24v system, but have a more reliable setup for cold starting, ease of use.
    Some kind of battery equalizer I believe would be required as there isn't exactly a dual voltage alternator around for these.
    Now if only I understood gas engines better. The install looks fairly straightforward but I worry I'll get in a situation where I have to replace military 24v parts with civilian 12v parts to really make it all mesh.

    • @TurnNBurn
      @TurnNBurn  Před 2 lety +1

      On my older Submarine build videos I actually converted a sealed 24V distributor with a rare and expensive 12V coil sold on eBay overseas. But you'll have the problems of all the special electrical boxes and plugs. I personally wouldn't do this swap on an M38A1 with all its stock style wiring, it's just too unique. That's why 2 Jeeps are always better than 1.

  • @morrisghill
    @morrisghill Před 2 lety

    Good presentation. I'm not sure if you know this, but you didn't necessarily need to fabricate an adapter, if you could find the other type of Willys L134 intake manifold used with big-throat Carter carbs such as the WA and the YF. The small-throat WO carb was used on 4WD Jeeps; the big-throat version went on 2WD Willys Wagons and Jeepsters. The throttle linkage is different, because on the big-throat version, the two carb studs are located side-to-side, while for the small-throat version they are front-and-back. Either version bolts to the same exhaust manifold.

      @@upscaleshacki have the same carb, it runs great and starts great. the only reason i would want fuel injection is for beter fuel economy.
      So it would be intresting to see a long term review on this Jeep.
      But i think it would be pointless to upgrade to fuel injection with a points ignition or a cheap electronic ignition. My fuel economy and part throtle performance improved greatly with my new fancy ignition(123 ignition bluetooth distributor).
      And i agree on the cost of this setup.
      I think it would cost me around €1500 with al the extra parts. I can buy a lot of fuel for that kind of money.

    It wouldn't be difficult to lock up the distributor shaft, use the internal reluctor sensor & module to trigger the Sniper & then use another HEI module to fire your existing coil. Your distributor is in terrible condition, with all 4 connections on the HEI module corroded.

    • @TurnNBurn

    • @johnrebus1641
      @johnrebus1641 Před 2 lety

      @@TurnNBurn Well that goes without saying. I was referring to locking the top & bottom distributor shafts together so that the ignition timing can be controlled by the Sniper. The set-up screen actually shows a setting for " Magnetic Distributor" which could connect directly to the reluctor trigger. Then the existing ignition module could be moved somewhere dry & fire your existing coil. So then you could have electronic timing for no extra cost. PLEASE overhaul that distributor anyway as it is a disgrace to the rest of the vehicle.
