    Something is a miss here. The way I know, the Budapest -Belgrade route is only a portion of the economically much more important Thessaloniki - Belgrade - Budapest railway route. This needs to be both high speed as well as high tonnage line. Although a double rail line is already a significant improvement, I'd like to see a third, or even a fourth track laid down, so the high speed passenger trains and the heavy freight traffic could travel simultaneously.

      @holger_p Před 29 dny +1

      On hourly traffic, you only need a passing possibility every 60 Minutes distance, not a full new empty dedicated track.

      @@holger_p Thank you, You are of course right. A third track then as a compromise, all the way to Thessaloniki?

      @@wotan20 Depends on the expected Cargo. For now I would say keep the space for a third track, build wider bridges supporting a third track, etc.

      @@holger_p Well, I expect robust cargo traffic, but if cautionary approach is wished, so be it.

      @@wotan20 In 10 hours train distance you can reach Vienna and Warsaw from Hamburg. That's probably not a target.
      So it depends on the development of Hungaria, Romania, Serbia, how much cargo is involveld. Right now even traffic form Ukraine passes to Greece.
      But the huge container ships from Suez could also go to Constantia and Varna for this area. And from there, you could take a river boat to go up the danube to Budapest, with the capacity of a full train... in lower speed.
      So there are several paths.
      We will see, who wins in the price/speed-contest.

    The US offered to place Norfolk Southern in the region, in which case they wouldn't need any tracks since the train would off of them most of the time, anyway.

    The rail infrastructure on the Balkan is way behind and since the breakup of Yugoslavia international connections have declined. Some countries are now actually making some improvements. Slovenia too, I've seen a few upgraded lines and new trains. But in many other relations there's huge potential for upgrade. For example, going from Slovenia via Croatia to Serbia: It's possible but slow and frustrating. In and out of Bosnia: Actually impossible because there are no international trains, I'm not sure if they have any plans or totally given up. Albania, same story, I guess they have occasional trains with old Czech locomotives and used German rolling stock, but nothing across the border.
    To Greece: Only something for absolute rail nerds. (It seems like things inside Greece are improving some, with used Pendolini from Italy, but again the international connections leave a lot to be desired.)
    With trans-european corridors there's a potential for things to improve, but in the end the support of local governments is required and in a lot of countries it doesn't look like railways play much of a role in the transport sector.
