Maybe this is a situation like Frisk, where they are a person, but we control their soul without them wanting to. But unlike Frisk, Kris knows that we control him and doesn't like it wich is pretty normal.

I know I'm not gonna get popularity points for this, but I feel like this really needs to be said: A big part of why I don't like the "Kris is aware of us controlling them" theory is because it makes this scene too easy to explain. The whole mystery of why Kris is so scared of Spamton is dissolved: they aren't scared of him, he just reminds them too much of their own situation. The same thing happens with the end of each chapter: Who is the sinister entity possessing Kris? The answer: there isn't one, that's just Kris taking control back from us. It's a narratively weak explanation that dissolves mysteries rather than answering them. And the fact that it's become undisputed canon among the fanbase honestly makes me sad, I want to have more faith in Toby's writing abilities than that.
I would say he's not aware of the player,he just feels like he cannot choose what he wants,i mean if i didnt felt like i was in control of my body and choices,and then a creepy puppet told me i am being just like him,i would also freak out and get goosebumps,kris yelling when we select "no" tells me he is terrified of the possibility of being controlled not that he is aware of it,and i think in the future he will break the player's control over him and make his own choices altering the story,the game begins refusing to agnowledge the player's choice of avatar and name,sorry for the long ass text filled with broken english😅
