- The Arctic Pacific Divide is quite an interesting point that most travellers pass by without even knowing its significance. The Tanzilla river runs right alongside the Cassiar Highway, and though it is beautiful, it is also geographically significant, because it is the last river in Canada to run westward into the Pacific Ocean. From Dease River north, all of the water runs towards the Arctic Ocean. A quick stop to enjoy the importance of the location we are at, then we were on the road northbound.
Crossing the Yukon border is always a treat, and marks another milestone in our Arctic Expedition. As well, crossing the Yukon border meant the need for some Yukon fishing licenses, because I was preparing for a couple days of exceptional Pike fishing. I have fished Little Atlin Lake before, and had great success, so it was the perfect lake to choose to take out Simon and Loui, and get them into their first Pike.
Similar to myself, Simon has also had some difficulty fishing on his channel, but today it didn't take us long. Within the first thirty minutes, both Simon and Loui had a fish in the boat, and the rest of the day was dedicated to having fun. We caught one fish after the next, shared laughs and stories, and finished our day with a wonderful feast together. Go check out some other adventure content from Simon and from Loui.

Watching Emi get into so many fish, crab and shrimp this season has been so exciting. These are opportunities she has not been able to experience in her life before, and the excitement is absolutely contagious. In previous seasons I have targeted these fish with the fly rod, and it has been an absolute blast. I have gotten into a few that were difficult to fit into the net, but the fish Emi was pulling into the boat were a breed all their own. I know that Pike can get to be very large, but to see one after the next, too big to even keep, is a treat that you dont get to experience in many places.
I suppose when it comes to Pike fishing, the only thing better than non stop monster pike action, is some delicious Pike soup. I have made this soup once before, and I remember thinking how good it was and that I must have just gotten lucky with the spices, but on the second round, it is obvious that the flavour is coming from the fish. If you have an opportunity to try this soup, I highly recommend it.

The abandoned townhomes originated from the town of Cassiar. They were one building there. In 1992/93, after the mine closed, they were split into three and moved to Dease Lake. Only one section, the one on your right, is lived in. They were so expensive to heat and maintain that none could be rented.
There are many homes in the area from Cassiar.

Cool I worked on those townhouses when they were moved to Dease Lake sometime in the late 90’s. shame to see them in this condition.
I thought that they looked familiar, they were stained a brown color when I stayed with my cousin and her husband in Cassiar for a couple of weeks before I got a job working in the lumber mill in Watson Lake YT back in the late 80's.

From this video and any time I've visited in recent years, I'm pretty sure even the right side is a lost cause now. But I definitely do remember at least 2 units being occupied sometime between 2003-2008. Family of a childhood friend lived in one briefly, I think the father was a doctor.

Dease Lake was home for 2 years. There was, at that time, a little more to it. A hardware store and gift shop, another restaurant or two. But it's really lost a lot of the services. The bar used to do a Friday night steak night for $10! Best steak I ever ate! The 'estate' was moved in from Cassiar when it shut down, as were some of the houses. There used to be a big office of Forestry workers, which brought in a lot of families and made it necessary to build housing, which after the office closed, sat empty for quite a few years. When I went through last fall, those houses seem to have residents. I enjoyed living in Dease Lake. Now, living more of the year in THE Yukon at our cabin, and not at our home base in southern BC, I can honestly say...northern living is the best!

I’ve fished Northern Pike for nearly 70 years. Once you’ve hooked into a large Pike you are ruined for any other kind of fishing. Although I have to admit a Muskie ranks right up there with the Northern. Most people pass on Pike fishing because of the Y-bones. However if you know how to fillet them correctly the bones are avoided. Without a doubt this has been one of your best Destination Adventure episodes.
I remember ice fishing for Northern pike in Alberta way back when and some of them we couldn’t pull up through the 8” augured ice hole!!! You would just see those rows of teeth!!
... and that is saying a lot!
Man, I'd love to try that. When I went for pike in the great lakes area I find they're pretty good fight.. for a short period of time, and then nothing. Probably why I prefer I bass fishing. Of course, I'd love me some muskie action too.. here's to some good fishin' buddy!
The filleting has taken a lot of practice and video watching, and I’m still pretty lousy at it, but the meat is very very good. Well worth the struggle. lol
Pike is one of my favorite fish in Alberta. its so easy to fillet.. i found video on you yube how to do it properly

I worked on that project back in the mid 90's . We moved those buildings in sections from the abandoned and closing town of Casiar. They were reassembled in Dease Lake to provide rental units for the government forestry workers that were supposed to base in Dease . The government never actually showed up and while one of the buildings was operating for a couple of years the project collapsed. Vandalism took care of the rest of it and the place was eventually condemned. There was a large concrete sign that read Stikine Gate.

Your ‘the Yukon’ reminds me of Southern California where they take ‘the 10 ‘ to ‘the 5’, in Northern California we take ‘80’ to ‘5’. As I teenager I rode with my parents from Anchorage down the AlCan back 1962.

I am an old school UE. I respect greatly that you obey the signage on property and more importantly the dangers of black mold/mildew. My old respirator is collecting dust. 😥 I really enjoy your adventures!
I've learned that you can put the carcass in a bit of cheesecloth while you simmer it down and then you have it contained in one spot where you can pick through to get rid of the bones and save what meat comes off. Same thing with chicken or quail if you want to boil down the carcass and be able to remove bones without much drama.

That was an apartment complex and they finished building it at about the same time the gold and copper mine in the area closed down It was never lived in as it caught fire. It remained abandoned. I hope you did not get bitten by flies, mosquitoes and knats in that area they can get bad.

Dease Lake is a great and friendly community. Awesome place to live for a few years. Sold our house last year and still miss a lot of the people there.

I think this is the road my ex and I drove up in our van in 1979 when it was still under construction. Saw my first bull moose there! He was stopped in front of our van. He was HUGE. I thought we could drive around him but my ex said we better just wait until he moved which took about 10 minutes. Great memories.
Had to add a second comment. Emi is the pike queen ! I grew up on a small resort lake 40 miles north of Detroit. My first job at 7yrs old was bailing boats out at Pop's Boat & Bait across our little back bay behind the parents home on the point. In the bait shop there were huge pike heads nailed to boards caught in the 40s & 50s. Pop told me the largest was 49" and 42lbs ! Thats Muskie size ! The biggest we ever caught was 36" and 28lbs. We cooked them in butter, lemon juice, beer, and added garlic, onions. They were too bony to enjoy so we just caught and released. Ice fishing in the winter was better then summer for pike though. In 1990, I chartered a helicopter at Tatogga and flew into Mount Edziza area, including Eve Cone. It was well worth the cost. If traveling the Stewart-Cassier highway and you happen to find a charterable helicopter. I highly recommend it.
Otherwise, you can take a trail into the area, but it takes about a week to hike in and a week to hike out.

I saw the screen shot and thought I got a fishing show channel. Damn you now I’m definitely going to need to go there.
I stop at Kinaskan Lake Park and campground for two nights in the fall of 94 and it was wonderful, only camper there and I caught fish for dinner. Could not stay longer, they were closing for the season and I needed tires on the fifth wheel.
