    Jumping back into the TCG after 10 years away felt intimidating , but grabbing a Palkia VSTAR deck and a MEW Vmax deck got me right back into competitive play quickly !
    Now I'm up all night testing different decks / hands , hitting local card shops to play and snag singles , IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK

    this brings me back to the local tcg store days.
    I used to teach new players in some events (for boosters) or when there was a new player at the store having a tough time I would go out of my way to give them a hand.
    the my first battle product could totally be used on a tutor event at the local stores.

    My perspective on each deck:
    V Battle/Battle Academy:
    These are not meant for competitive play, but can be obtained for cheap and can easily be worked into the Battle Academy board game. Perfect for casual play.
    Ex Battle Decks:
    Insert a repeat of what I said about the V decks except the fact that these contain cards that are slightly more usable than V decks in competitive play.
    Deluxe Battle Deck:
    We've only gotten two of these at the moment so it's hard to determine how worthwhile they are. They're a step up from the V/ex decks, but lack the consistency and power to keep up the competitive ones. Meowscarada can be upgraded to a rouge deck that's usable, but Quaquaval is not great at the moment. Keep an eye on these.
    League Battle Deck:
    The definitive starter deck for if you want to explore competitive play in person or online through Live. These are filled to the brim with staple trainer cards, even if the main star of the deck isn't a top tier threat. Sometimes it is, as shown with Mew, sometimes not. Definitely pick up one of these that is standard legal.

      @@Erckain Depends on what you're looking for. The Level 1 Decks aren't great for League Play but work well for quick matches and learning the game. League Battle Decks are helpful for having something to use for more competitive play, but they release far less often. Currently we have a Miraidon one releasing soon so I'd suggest that in the League Battle Deck department.

    • @InThirdPerson
      @InThirdPerson  Před 8 měsíci

      If you’re going to play regularly in local tournaments, Mew is still the way to go. Just make sure when you upgrade that you have a version that can beat Charizard ex. Would look at Rowan Stavenow’s Peoria list as a starting point. There are numerous other Mew builds on my channel too.
      Palkia is a decent alternative, as Palkia and the core deck work as a solid foundation for most water decks going forward (including Chien-Pao). Miraidon is likely to be good for years to come, but it too loses a bunch of core pieces to rotation. If you’re willing to pick up the Flaaffys, Raikous and Raichus, Miraidon is an amazing choice too.

However, I’m not going to publish it until we have written confirmation by The Pokemon Company of exactly when it will occur. Otherwise, the comments will be flooded with people asking when rotation is for months. I will publish it with that info as soon as we get it confirmed. Stay tuned!

    • @InThirdPerson
      @InThirdPerson  Před 8 měsíci

      Mew VMAX is still an incredibly strong deck. It just won the world championships and even in a field where dark-type Charizard is the most popular deck, Mew finished in 3rd at Peoria regionals, which was higher than any Charizard deck.
      x.com/rowan_stavenow/status/1711177578503881081?s=46&t=WvvseieK6nMMQ6rerZFlFw
      If you plan on playing a lot in the next few months, whether IRL or PTCGL, the Mew VMAX League Battle Deck is absolutely worth it! Just make sure your upgrades include an answer to Charizard.

    • @InThirdPerson
      @InThirdPerson  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I don’t necessarily think Pokemon balances League Battle Decks that way. Case in point, the upcoming Miraidon deck hits the most recent deck (Palkia) for weakness. Also, the Ice Rider deck has multiple copies of Path to the Peak, which grinds Shadow Rider to a halt. To me they feel like they take strong archetypes that can be packaged together with only 6 foil cards knowing that most players will eventually upgrade these to their meta equivalents.

    Actually the world championship decks are standard legal they are not standard legal in tournament setting. But playable in standard format at your local game stores.

    • @InThirdPerson
      @InThirdPerson  Před 2 měsíci

      Actually, all 4 of the decks contain cards that rotate out of Standard this week, making none of them “Standard-legal” out of the box starting this Friday. Mew VMAX rotates out entirely, so you can’t even modify the deck to work in Standard.
      Also, even if these decks were going to survive rotation, these decks aren’t allowed in any official capacity due to the card backs being different and the signature on each card. These are replica cards, as stated by Pokemon.
      Official Rules: www.pokemon.com/static-assets/content-assets/cms2/pdf/play-pokemon/rules/play-pokemon-tournament-rules-handbook-02132024-en.pdf
      “5.2 Trading Card Legality
      Only genuine Pokémon Trading Card Game cards may be used at Play! Pokémon events.”
      www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/product-gallery/2022-pokemon-tcg-world-championships-decks#:~:text=These%20replica%20decks%20have%20a,world%20of%20competitive%20Pokémon%20TCG.
      “These replica decks have a different card back than standard Pokémon TCG cards, as well as gray borders and the player’s signature on each card. This means that the cards are not legal for tournament play, but they’re perfect for diving into the world of competitive Pokémon TCG.”
      A game store allowing the use of them will vary from store-to-store and at most would allow it for casual play.

    I got the My First Battle decks and didnt know that they had non standard backs and arent usable in regular play. Kinda pissed me off. Simplified rule set also pissed me off because its basically a different game.
    Rule changes for My First Battle:
    No retreating except with switch card
    No prize cards, just 3 strikes youre out
    Only 3 cards drawn
    You start with energy
    Energy is pooled and shared for all mons.
    If your deck runs out you shuffle your discard pile and reuse it.

    • @InThirdPerson
      @InThirdPerson  Před 6 měsíci

      I think the My First Battle set is fantastic for kids and those who want the absolute ground floor of the Pokemon TCG experience at a budget price. I own one of the sets and did a review of it for the channel. I also published a video with a full playthrough to help those interested see it in action and get a better understanding of whether this is the right product for them.
      I see My First Battle as t-ball compared to the main Pokemon TCG being baseball. For those who really want/need to start at the ground floor, the simplified ruleset is a great way to ease them in until they’re ready/motivated to try the full game. Even with adults, I probably would use My First Battle as my go-to training wheels to quickly warm them up to the basics and hopefully inspire them to try the full game.
      However, it’s not a product for everyone. For those who want to start with the full experience, something like Battle Academy or any of the other pre-made decks might be a better fit.
