Hey Doug! A Maiden fan from Brasil here... There are many factors to explain why we react the way we react, but there is one important factor: we do not get as many shows as North America and Europe. South America in general, to be honest. We get some long hiatus as well (the Early Days tour never came to South America, for example).
So when they come, we try to go. But Brasil is huge and has over 200miliion people (no news here, you probably know that). And usually there are only 4-5 dates to go. When we got lucky, they play like in 8 places. Some years they just came to São Paulo and Rio, so fans from North, Northeast, Center-West and South had to travel. The cost to do that is high and the tickets are quite expansive as well.
Maiden is my favorite band and I have been only in 2 shows. And I know that many fans did not even have the chance to go to one.
PS: This Rock in Rio show was a "Maiden night", but there were some amazing bands playing before them. That was another reason to be half a million people in 2001 (I watched 'live' on TV, by the way)
PS 2: sorry about the bad english

In add to this, Iron Maiden was one of the first heavy metal bands that came to Brazil. They played on first rock in rio (in 85), for many of brazilians in that time bands like Iron Maiden were unknown and the festival was a huge succes, after that Iron Maiden maked a legion of fans on all South America that growed over the years.

Blaze deserves to be remembered, not easy to replace Bruce in mid-'90s, he did a great job in X-Factor, besides his career after Maiden wasn´t so nice, he was unemployed for years and suffer a lot.

    • @ThisICommand666
      @ThisICommand666 Před 3 lety +40

His career after Maiden had a lot of ups and downs, but I don't think there was ever a period where he wasn't doing anything musically. He has several solo albums that I think are better than TXF, VXI, and even some of the Bruce albums--The Tenth Dimension, his recent Infinite Entanglement trilogy, and his newest, War Within Me is really, really good. His lowest point was in 2011, when he didn't have a band and had to tour using local musicians, and there was a time he was working in a factory making wheelbarrows in order to keep his music career going.
But I definitely agree, Blaze deserves better than he got from fans and from Steve in particular, who should have known that, when you hire a guy with a lower range, you downtune the songs written for a higher-range singer when you perform them live. Go figure he blew out his voice on both tours.

@@ThisICommand666 I heard Blaze on a radio interview and he said that he was pretty much bankrupted on 2 occasions - if my memory serves me correct. Something was mentioned about being done over by his label and so after some time he decided to go completely freelance and make his own music and produce it and all that jazz.
I really like Blaze singing. His "Kings of Metal" album is quality.

I was at these two shows (Iron Maiden Rock In Rio and Rush in Rio) and really, the reaction at Rush's show was wild, maybe because the band took decades to come to Brazil and it was a dream come true for the fans. This version of YYZ would be great for an analysis and outside that it is an instrumental, its time signature is broken and people accompanied the instrumental with their voice. It may sound strange, but it's something we often do when listening to any song.

Hi. The intro is Gregorian chants.
And as a person who can tell several guitarsits just by hearing them, maybe the following info can help you:
Dave is a legato player. Adrian and Janick are staccato. Of the two Adrian is more bluesy and he's more melodic. In the sense that he's always on a scale, usually a minor pentatonic and mods. He also loves chromatic scales whereas Janic is almost always experimental, free style. Almost every time he plays a solo it's a different thing. Adrian has got an ultra light touch (or touché ). Almost every note is at pitch even when live. ( He even uses the G string from a diffrernt gauge then the rest of the 5 strings, because that's the only way the G string stays in tune ) Dave's got a light touch too but not as light as Adrian. Janick's got quite a strong touch. Both Adrian an Janick prefer alternate picking whereas Dave uses a lot of hammer on pull offs. Adrian does that too, but not as much as Dave.
Tone: Both Dave and Adrian have got wide midrange. Dave a bit wider. Adrian goes even wider in the solos, though ( with a Digitech wah pedal ). Janick's clearly got a more scooped tone. That alone helps a lot to tell him. Adrian is the one that uses mahagony body guitars the most (It's got a more resonant, nasal tone). That can help to tell too. But the others use mahagony body guitars too but only occasionaly. They prefer alder.

Considering how Doug wants people to watch his videos, doing something so unpopular to please a small noisy minority would be crazy. This is a terrific choice and by my feelings “The X Factor” is a terribly underrated album with in the Iron Maiden discography. A lot of people discount the incredible mood and craftsmanship that was deployed to make this album. Steve Harris was going through a dark time in his life including divorce, which is why the slower and more gothic maiden sound exists. This album is a mood piece and it is a damn good one. Blaze Baylay does a better job singing this song than Bruce because it fits Blazes art form.

As a guitarist myself one of my favorite things about Maiden and especially the three guitar lineup now is how each player brings their own character to the band. You'll get to the point where you can tell who is playing which solo pretty quickly the more you delve into them Doug. Davey is pretty much all legato and a very fluid player with a lot of strength in his hands. All hammer ons and pull offs and he nearly always plays in the neck pickup position with a double humbucker which gives him that "creamy" fluid tone. Adrian is very pick heavy and more of a staccato player and has a lot of very wide vibrato to his phrasing. Janick is a more spontaneous player, not afraid to push boundaries and step outside of the confines of "normality". Again he's more of a staccato player and is pretty easily identified by a kind of scratchy sound to his playing. All great guitarists in their own right and each one brings something unique to the table. I love the three guitar lineup and it's opened up a lot of possibilities for layering their sound live more.

Dave Murray uses a lot of hammer-ons, pull-offs and occasionally taps (like in his solo in this song), Janick Gers is very pick heavy in his faster solos (often referred to as ‘shredding’), and in slower solos he uses a lot of bends, Adrian Smith combines both elements and uses a lot of bluesy scales. Brazillian Maiden fan here, and the connection Maiden has with us is amazing!. I think this connection comes from the first time the band came to our country back in 1985 to the first ever Rock in Rio festival, it was a very special moment for both the band and our Country. They were releasing the album Powerslave(which is for a lot of people their best album) and making one of their biggest tours ever, and also it was a VERY special moment for Brazil, we were just starting our democratic process after 20 years of a military dictatorship and starting to open our country and entering the new global scenario. It was a magical marriage for the band and fans here, and none of the sides have let the other down since then. Up the Irons! 🤘

The thing with Brazil, Argetina and most South America really, is their passion for the Metal genre. The biggest names of Metal have South America as a obligatory passage on their world tours because the fans down there are just unbelievable. This recording in particular is set as one of Maiden's best performances live and a huge part of that is due to the public interaction. They have invented chants, they sing along, they cheer and shout those melodies... they create a whole vibe on concerts unmatched by any part of the world

You're so right when talking about the 3 guitars different personalities. Those 3 pals have been able (and they still are) to maintain their own musical personality in a (for the standards) big (as number of elements) band. The complicity between Adrian, Dave and Janick is something, musically, precious.
When you ask about the Brazil question, I can't answer for them, but it looks like the huge welcome Maiden had in the Iron Curtain docu/concert; maybe related to the local politics about events and shows (in different places and times of course) and the need the people feel about feeding their own hunger of art in its several shapes.

You missed the song intro. It has a couple minutes of intro to create an atmosphere and then start the proper song. Like when you reacted to Fear of the Dark, missing about 30 seconds of the main intro riff. A suggestion for preventing this would be searching for the duration of each track before selecting a live video. Many live videos on You Tube have cuts like these. Iron Maiden always play the full songs in it's concerts , so the duration of the tracks will always be very similar to the studio recordings. Nevertheless, thank you for this analisys! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 HI BRAZIL HERE 🤘🤘🇧🇷🇧🇷
thank you for showing rock in rio, this Iron Maiden show is a classic, i met the band through this show when i was 10 years old haha
Rock in Rio is a traditional music festival in Brazil, famous for having brought in 1985 many artists of difficult access to the Brazilian public, such as Queen, Iron maiden, Ozzy, etc..
so it's a band very dear to Brazilians and that influenced us a lot, it ended up becoming traditional to them to participate in the festival, unlike the other artists of the first edition, who didn't create this affectionate relationship with the festival.
The last edition happened in 2019 and they played, I was there and it was amazing, haha by the way, on the same day there was sepultura, iron naiden, helloween, anthrax, slayer and Scorpions!! for an absurdly more affordable price than all the separate shows here.
So it's a great party, and a great pleasure for us to receive this bands!!
and by the way, great channel I see all videos!! 🤘👏
'Angra' is a Brazilian melodic metal band influenced by them, it is part of the generation of bands like Symphony x (usa), rhapsody of fire(Ita), Nightwish (fin), helloween (ger).. so, our representative is Angra!! haha they are icons of that generation too!
it will be really cool to hear heavy metal influenced by iron maiden made with Brazilian influences such as Antônio Vila Lobos (Brazilian composer of classical music) and African rhythms ideas and very reflective lyrics!
they use a lot of orchestrations, virtuosity and cool chord ideas!!
    Sugestion songs:
    - No pain for The dead
    - Omni silence inside (New song)
    - Winds of destination
    Peace ✌️

The opportunity to watch this live in their last tour was an out-of-this-world experience. The first time I went to a Live concert by Iron maiden I camped outside to get a good spot and since then I always get to the line a day early because there is NO WAY I will lose the best spot possible. Front roll is the best way to experience Iron maiden. And ever since that first concert (It was the Maiden England 2013 tour) I ALWAYS go to more than one for each tour. Thankfully they always do more than one show here in Brazil. On the last tour I had the chance to experience 2 of them, two days apart. I got sick after it all ended, got close to pneumonia. Still worth it. 100% worth it. My point here is> Yes, there is something special about Iron maiden Live. The experience is good enough watching a recording but it will never translate to how it is to be there.

Here are a few tips for recognizing the guitarists.
The blond...ish one with the round face is Dave Murray, one of the original guitarists of the band.
The brown haired one, with the goatee and, almost always, wearing the denim vest, is Adrian Smith, one of the original guitarists, who left the band for a "solo" career, than later came back.
The one with the brown...ish spiral permed hair is Jannick Gers, the guitarist who'd played with Bruce Dickinson on his "solo" album "Tattooed Millionaire". He joined Maiden when Bruce returned, as Adrian had already left. He stayed with the band when Adrian came back.

So, I live in Brazil and I'd say that here we go bananas in most internationally famous huge bands for one reason: Rarity/scarcity.
Bands as big as Iron Maiden or Judas Priest do not perform here very often. When they do, there's only 3-5 concerts per tour, which makes it very hard to attend to and also, tickets are very expensive, they can go from 1/4 to more than half the minimum wage here, depending on the band and on the sector you wanna be.
On top of that, Brazil is a HUGE country, unless you live in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, which are 100% sure on their list, there's a chance you'll need to travel 500-1k miles to attend to the concert and traveling by plane is also very expensive here for most people. So if you need to spend AT LEAST one minimum wage for a concert, I believe you'd love to get crazy and enjoy every second too, as we do.
Also, Iron Maiden has a history of liking Brazil and also puts high words about the Brazilian fanbase. Check Flight 666 documentary for more info on that.

Doug I tell you why they made those fans in Brasil. The first time they went to Brasil was in Rock in Rio 1985 (First Rock in Rio - I was There) and that 1st festival was amazing, huge and all people of South America went (Im from Argentina) and was at that January that Brasilians discovered in massive way Iron Maiden and the core of fans start to grow and love them all around South America including Brasil. Was the focal point where I.M. blast to all South America, so for the band was really important. From that point, all the next Rock in Rio Festivals were a stop on his tours. Take a look in Wiki what other players went to Rock in Rio in 1985. I think it was the most important Festival of Rock after WoodStock. 1.400.000 people in 10 Days. (Sorry my english)
