J Dubb. A couple of comments for you...
a) You should get your Ham license.
b) You need your ham license to discover the connection between guns, 4wd's, nature, camping, chainsaws and radio.
I’m working on it. About 50% of the ham guys I meet really are not welcoming
@@JDubbsadventure Keep trying to find some good Ham folk. They are out there. Your local ARRL club will have some good people you can approach. Don't give up. :-)

You can get shorter gmrs antennas
I know and I have one but it doesn’t work as well. Since I’m in the mountains the taller antennas seam to work better but maybe I’ll do a test on that
