This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Simone de Beauvoir's work of existentialist and feminist theory, The Second Sex, and specifically on her examination of how women get accused of being illogical, simply contrary, resentful, or obstinate. She argues that women are not illogical or against logic per se, but find themselves opposed to uses of logic and thought that set them at a disadvantage.

It does often seem to me, as a woman, that dominion of the world seemingly belongs to men, and we must somehow adapt to the arbitrary rules given to us by them. As you pointed out, it is rather confusing. I'm very grateful to women like de Beauvoir for exposing the philosophical mind of the "second sex". When I read older philosophical works, like Seneca, who compares women to children or fools, it's rather a jolting reminder of just how far we have come in terms of equality. We still have a long way to go, yet this doesn't negate my appreciation.
