  • We asked our Mexican dads to rank different store-bought salsas 😭😂
We asked our Mexican dads to taste test and rank different store bought salsas! Many Mexican dads love making spicy and tasty salsas but how do salsas from the store compare? The dads tried all sorts of salsas like Taco Bell Salsa verde, Tostitos Restaurant Style Salsa, Casa Sanchez Mild Salsa Roja, Herdez Salsa Verde, Pace Mild Picante Sauce, La Victoria Salsa Verde, Tostitos Chunky Habanero Salsa! Do you like to eat salsas? Which these salsas look tasty?

I should preface this with saying that I am a white boy from the Midwest but I can handle myself in terms of spicy food. I grew up eating canned salsa and thought it was ok. It was not until I lived in San Antonio for several years where I got to try authentic Mexican food and real Mexican salsa and wow. Like I said I can handle my spice level and I told my Mexican girlfriend at the time that her mom could turn up the heat level in her salsa as hot as she possible could…that was a mistake. Like the dad in this video he said that salsa should be so hot it kicks your ass and I agree. However this woman’s salsa knocked me out, let me get back up and knocked me out again it was so hot. To this day I don’t buy canned salsa and make my own the way her mom told me to…it’s been a life changer

Then i added in some lime juice, salt pepper garlic powder and the kick in the balls, a tablespoon full of Carolina reaper flakes. Ohhh it was so good and tasty but so spicy it could strip the paint off a car.nobody but me would eat any of it.and after eating some on a chip I had to eat almost a hand full of chips to get the burn down. But it was damn good.I grew up in san diego and imperial county in california. Most of my friends were hispanic.I basically aS adopted by their families since i spent more time at my friends houses than mine it seemed.I remember helping my best friends mom, aunties, grandma and cousins fold tamales, or watching the grandpa roast a goat over the fire pit in their back yard. I learned to cook alot of good hispanic food. Carne asada is to this day my favorite. The red kind is my top favorite. My go to breakfast is chorizo and egg burritos. I love cooking and know how to cook many hispanic dishes. Not just Ted med stuff but real authentic meals. One of the dad's talked about chilequilas. Ohhhh damn i love those. I live in a border town that's about 20mins away from San Luis, Mexico. In our town we only have 1 grocery store, 1 meat market, 2 fast foods, and 2 gas stations. That's it. That's all that makes up our town. The grocery store price gouges the food in there sometimes to $10 a box of cereal..so imagine the produce prices at times. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the pre-made salsas because of the price gouging here 🥲 we do make homemade if we travel a little further to a dif town and get access to their grocery stores.

The thing is you gotta look at the ingredients used. When I or my family make a home made salsa we never add vinegar or extra oils its just the base ingredients. The reason store bought salsas taste sour or synthetic is because of all the additives and a lot of store salsas use heavy amounts of vinegar as a cheap additive for taste.

Dunno where ya live and maybe it'll get expensive, but I'm sure you can find jalapenos (or serranos, maybe chipotle if you're lucky) and green tomato in a local store or supermarket.
You just need to buy those, add onion, a bit of garlic and boil all together (yes, all of it) for lets say one hour or so. Don't drip anything. Now, for the real deal: we mexicans usually smash the boiled mix using a "molcajete" (stone version of mortar and pestle) so the salsa is well mixed but not liquid. It needs to have chunks. Even the traditional molcajete adds a bit of "stony" flavor, which is considered a plus.
Some people like to use blender, to have a perfectly smooth texture. That's fine too. Useful if you plan to do enchiladas or similar stuff.
Whatever you choose, enjoy. Personally, I love tex-mex food too and I try to make my own chili with meat. Of course, it isn't as good as the southern version.

The first 2 guy is a real Mexican he doesn't criticize the food. That's how you know it's good or not. He just tells you yes or no. That's all you need to know.

There are so many different salsas at the grocery store that I can go there and always try something new. It has its own "craft" thing going on much like there are craft beers.

I'd have tried to find a local grocer that has "homemade" salsas in the refrigerated case, not these shelf stable ones. I'd like to see them try some of the ones I get and see how it compares to what they make.

I buy the canned Walmart GV fire roasted salsa for like $1. Fresh cilantro, a garlic glove, a couple peppers, and a little lime juice and it really tastes pretty good. Sometimes I put oil in it and make it creamy by hitting it with a stick blender.
Generally, I'd make it fresh but usually store bought tomatoes are so eh that unless I have homegrown ones the canned are better. I use the GV salsa as the tomato basically.

Back in the day one night a week you could get $1 bean burrito from taco bell.. and if you asked they'd put on green hot sauce.. being students and poor we'd get 30 of them and eat all week. Thank god for good plumbing .. but it was better with the green salsa

Internet Shaquille was posting crazy a while back about how the trick to a good Salsa rojas is less tomato than you think you need. Same is true for salsa verde and the tomatillos. These sauce companies love using tonnes of these 2 because they are very high in moisture so they can pack it to a liquid which is easy to preserve. A good homemade salsa isn't so wet and that means you can taste the mixture of flavours much better.
This is why every Salsa verde here was "too sour, not spicy".

Surprised On the Border wasn't shown. It isn't the best salsa but I find the taste of it better than Tostitos. Then again, I'm a big fan of cumin and they go heavy with the cumin in that one.

I don't know if it's exclusive to my region, but Sadie's New Mexican salsa is one I think they would appreciate. It's chunky, it doesn't use a lot of ingredients, and it's nice and hot (but not so hot that it loses its flavor).
