Mannum - Murray River Floods - the peak is nearly here!

  • I returned to Mannum today, a month after my previous visit when I checked out the preparation for the anticipated record floods heading downstream. With the peak flow only about a week away, it was interesting to see how much the water had risen and whether or not the prepared levees were doing their job. There is an awful lot of water out there and it is still slowly rising and testing out the defences.
The 1931 flood level has now been surpassed, making this the second largest flood in recorded history after the 1956 event, and the largest for nearly 70 years.

We went for a drive through there about a month ago. The levels have definitely increased since then.
Thank you for uploading this. The aerial shots showed how far the river has spread since we went through. The main street was free of water then.
I have shared this with my daughter and my brother - he took us through there.
I'm going to keep an eye out for more updates from you.
    Happy New Year too.

Great bit of filming Frank... very informative, the local council have certainly done a great job with the Main Street levee and the caravan park too. Nature is a very powerful force, we can work with it but never overpower it. Regards😊

Thank you, indeed it is, although I have to admit I was around for the floods in the mid-70's too!

      Yes a large amount.
Why don't we build a dam and retain all this water, because we will likely be in drought again in 5 years time.

    • @captainfrank01
      @captainfrank01  Před rokem

@@geoffcohen613 Quite probably so, but put water into a dam in our climate and evaporation rates are huge. That was one of the reasons the Chowilla dam never went ahead in the late '60's.

Incredible to see just how much water there is during these events.
I have seen some flood markings in various areas and it's hard to imagine in normal times that it can be ever like that.
I wonder what the mouth is looking like atm.
    Thanks for the video.

YW. Yes, it sure is impressive! I reckon half of Adelaide was in Mannum today having a look, but on the positive side, the local shops were doing a roaring trade. I saw a video of the mouth a couple of days ago and it didn't appear to be hugely wider than usual but there was dirty water for kilometres in each direction.

@@captainfrank01 Yeah I remember having some very nice fish n chips when we were down there last.
Was supposed to go again before christmas but the weather was rubbish and my mate was too busy at work.
Hopefully he will finish his busy time before winter sets in but we shall see.
Looks like we will be going crabbing soon which is something I haven't done for ages.
      Cheers.

I launched from a small lookout immediately behind and above the bowling green - no obstacles! You can see me centrally in the shot at 4:41 at the top of a steep flight of stairs next to a shade shelter. There were not many options tbh.

Happy New Year South Australia. Looks like mega precautions against flooding. It's wet season here in wet tropics; that looks so tranquil in comparison. Hoping for no cyclones here too.

Yes, probably not what you're used to but it doesn't happen here very often!

It's not looking good either at blancetown. We've got about 3 acres and it will be knocking on the door to go to the house. Up on steels not like the neighbour down the ward is knocking on his door step and his house is built on the dirt.

Why is there a line of houses (?) In the river overflow area?

There are shacks along the river bank. Some have been turned into permanent residences but Mannum council does have a lot of regulations regarding buildings below the 1956 flood level.

The levees have saved a lot of the main town.
Further evidence that building on flood plains and lower river banks should be prohibited.

Evidence of complete stupidity- not one structure is built, no dams and irrigation systems, no rivers deepen and big levee build, no big artificial lakes - we dig huge holes for gold but not for water. Criminal negligence
