  • A beautiful piece of history. My Holy Grail Gun, The S&W 1006, chambered in 10mm. I unleash my inner Sonny Crockett every time I pull the trigger! Initially, I'd discovered the 1006 thanks to Ebomey. Go check out his videos, he definitely has some good ones.

Congrats.... I carry my 5906 as much as I can. I am no marksman, but that damn 5906 sure makes me look good. I ordered the Hogue grips for it but ended up switching back to the original grips because as much as I love them on my 1006 they just made the 5906 feel to big. I did get a new original set of grips for the 5906 on Midway USA. If you want my Hogue grips for the 5906 just let me know and I will send them to you.

The 1006 with the Hogue grips and the 5906 with the original grips are about the same size. My 5906 is in great condition but the grips felt slippery.... But the new ones feel perfect.

WV State Police had them for a short while. My friends and I were able to each get one back in the 1990s. Each was selected by a S&W rep for us. They show holster wear from use, but all shot well, and several of us have used them to fill deer tags. Mine was on a doe that tried to walk over me in my blind. It's a great sidearm for gun season.

So I have been looking for a 1066 all the way up to a 1086 after watching your review and low and behold today I found one with seven mags and custom leather holster. The character Sonny Crockett never used a Smith and Wesson 1006. Under the Bren Ten, yes. After the Bren, "Crockett" utilized the Smith and Wesson 4506.However, this is a nice sidearm.

@@Its_Papa_John Me too, man! Great vid. I got my 1006 10 years ago (1/10/10 to be precise). It's definitely got the Miami Vice spirit. You can imagine if the show progressed further into the 90s, Crockett would eventually be packing one of these. The 4506 he sported is only one step away, really. I now have a 645, 745, 845, 945, 1006, and 4505 (carbon variant of the 4506-1). Got my sights set on a 1076 or 1066 next. Love 10mm.

Great handgun! I purchased mine (exactly like yours) way back in the 80s new (came in blue cardboard box). I've used it almost exclusively as a stand hunting pistol for hogs and deer here in Texas and it still looks like new. Super accurate and has never skipped a beat ever. I've used almost exclusively 180gr JHP full power hand loads in it over all these years. The power and ballistics of the 10mm is almost identical to the 41 Rem Mag revolver round. The 1006 in 10mm is an awesome big game hunting handgun within 75 yards. I purchased a Glock G40 MOS in 10mm recently thinking a longer slide double stack pistol would be a better hunting piece. The Glock is ok, but I've gone back to using the 1006 as I just shoot it better.

Completely agree with you! The 1006 is the most beautiful 10 mm, and not just becaus a famous Metro-Dade Detective carried one, though the Colt Delta Elite is a fine gun, too! But early 1911 had issues with cracked frames!I was never worried about 10 mm crisp recoil, to me a recoiling gun is just part of the game! And keeping it under control good fun!

@@Its_Papa_John Yes, back then it was the time of the Wonder-Nine, people went crazy about hicap mags, and this sealed the faith of so many great guns - not only pistols, but revolvers in particular! While I never understood why they prefer firing two 9mm when a single 10mm could get the job done! And that same faith ended the Bren Ten, besides serious quality issues - literally a green banana! If the Bren Ten had been tested properly, and developed to full extend, it would have been a great gun! But I suppose S&W paid a high dollar to get their 1006 in Crockett's hands on the TV show, and we all know the magic that marketing can do...

I have had a 4506 since 1992.... 45acp is just sooooooo much cheaper.... I went that way! And the 4506 is a ammo-garbage-disposal!!... if the ammo was stamped 45acp... 4506 would eat it up!

Hey Ricky! Thanks so much for the kind words. I've actually been meaning to update my presentation, but I haven't had much spare time lately. I'm very glad you enjoyed it! The 3rd Gen series are easily the best pistols ever made. I've never had any malfunctions with them, out of thousands of rounds. In fact, I believe they're the only guns I've ever owned which haven't malfunctioned at all. I don't have any experience with the 4516, but I'm sure it's a fantastic little pistol. One of my main carry pieces right now is a 3914. But since Fall and Winter are right around the corner, it'll give me more opportunities to carry my 1006 and 5906 in my shoulder rig. Stay safe and carry that 4516 everyday! ;)

A springfield Omega 6 inch ported. A couple LAR Grizzlies in 45 win mag/10mm. Several Glocks 20 & 29. And now more recently. The S&W 2.0 10mm 4inch. They all shot very well. They did not have the Bren 10 mm for the show it was hard to get so they sent them a Bren 45 ACP instead. Then season 3 4 and 5 sonny used the 4506. The FBI boys and girls couldn't handle the requil so they went to the 40 cal in Smith and Wesson in 1992 when the weapon came out. I bought me one for off duty at our dept. But I hated the double safety decocker lever and the fact that while the mag was out of the mag port and a round in the chamber the weapon will not fire! So I gave it to my cop buddy they carried 4006 at his dept. And we carried 4506 at our dept. So I carried my Sig Sauer 45 ACP P220 for 19 years with no problems with my weapon I switched to my Sig Sauer 45 ACP P320 back in 2014 and still cary it! I told my FTO my finger is my safety he smiled and said that's why we let you Carrie it!

I don’t think you mentioned it, but this gun (like the FBI’s gun) had several modifications incorporated into it’s design and production. I’d be happy to share those differences with you but my reference material describing them are packed away in a box and in transit (I’m relocating to a new State). If no one can provide that information now I’d be glad to share it a week or two down the road. This particular gun also has an interesting “back story “ regarding why only a small number of these commemorative guns were produced for the CHP.

Do you think switching from a 9mm to a 10mm for a home defense pistol is a good idea in today’s world? I know the 9mm let the FBI down in the 1986 Miami shootout but bullet technology has also come a long way. Today’s 9mm definitely performs better than it did in the 80’s. Just wanted some opinions seeing as I’ve been considering switching from 9mm to 10mm and have been looking into the S&W 1006, 1076, and Colt Delta Elite.

I think you'll be just fine with either! I carry both and trust them both equally. You are right, bullet technology has come a very long way since the '80s. If it were 1986, I would not trust 9mm as an adequate self-defense cartridge. But I trust both for almost any purpose nowadays! However, 10mm still remains to be my favorite cartridge of all time.

I have a 1006, 1076, 1026, and a 1066. I need help with my 1006 because of the odd military style inventory style markings on the frame, barrel, magazine, and slide. Were they ever carried by any branch of the military? Also the gun will only DA function, so I am thinking that there was some part removed to make it fire as such. It was also polished, and the sights and trigger are an odd glossy black finish. I plan on returning it to S&W for a complete refurbishment. My 1026 was reconfigured by S&W as a short slide when it was returned by its previous owner ( for whatever reason ). Between my 3 guns I have 10 magazines but only one matching box. I also have the 4506 and i'm working on the 1086.

    • @Its_Papa_John
      @Its_Papa_John  Před rokem

Dang, that's quite the 10mm Smith collection! As far as I know, no 1006 was ever issued by any branch of any military. But who knows? Far crazier things have happened. It's likely that the gun you have was issued by a police department sometime from the early '90s to the early '00s. I'm sure a lot of departments either ordered them and cancelled their contract after new recruits complained about recoil, or cancelled them before even receiving them due to 10mm unfortunately being on its way out of the mainstream law enforcement world at the time. Apart from the FBI issuing the 1076, the only official record I can find of any LE agency issuing 10XX-series pistols would be the Virginia State Police issuing the 1026 from 1990-1994.
Either way, it's still very likely that your 1006 was an issued gun, given the armory markings. There are a few oddball examples of 3rd Gen Smith & Wesson autos being DAO, but still retaining their ability to be cocked for a more precise single-action shot. That's another one of those lovable oddities from the '90s- since a lot of police departments were still transitioning from traditional DA revolvers to semi-autos, they wanted the same handling characteristics as a revolver, but with the added capacity of a semi-auto. If I were you, I'd send your 1006 in to S&W to see what information they can give you about it, and if any repairs are necessary. They could probably tell you any sort of weird quirks about department contract specs, if yours was an issued gun.
I actually sometimes carry a 5906, which was technically a police trade-in, despite having never been issued or fired! Smith sometimes keeps extra guns around due to contractual obligations with departments that still issue their guns. When the contract was finally up, Smith sold it as "used" on the commercial market. For some reason, they require them to be marked as used. But I can say for a fact that I was the first to fire my gun since it left the factory. This was an exceptionally uncommon find, so I can only imagine how amazing it would be if Smith still had some NIB 1006s on the shelves, locked away deep in the heart of one of their warehouses.
I'd love to see some pictures of your 1006 and 1026 in their current configurations, they sound delightfully weird. Thanks for the comment! I hope I've been helpful in some way.

Unfortunately, no. Smith never produced the Model 1006 with a rail, so there's really no option for mounting a light. I believe there was a company in the mid-'90s produced a laser module for the Model 4506, which mounted to the front of the trigger guard. If it'll fit the 4506, it'll likely fit the 1006 as well. I definitely recommend them! Probably the best 10mm pistol money can buy, at the moment. Unless you wanna buy an old Bren Ten for way more than they're worth!

No the Bren 10 is the holy grail item. Sonny Crockett carried a Bren 10.

Not true. The holy trail means very rare. A Hi-Point is very common. Where as a bren 10 was only made for 2 years and the manufacturer went bankrupt even after it was a centerpiece in a tv show called Miami Vice.

Also you can find a s&w 1006 for $1500. A Bren 10 goes for way more because of the law of supply and demand. I am not mocking your choice. I am just throwing something else to think about. If I owned any of the 2 guns I mentioned, I would be very weary of shooting any of them. These would be oiled up and thrown in a display case and than a safe at the end of the day, but you have to agree the 1006 is easier to come by than a bren 10.

Well that is a matter of opinion. I would hate to be you if you had to get it repaired. Logistics has a lot to do with the reason to own and shoot them. A firearm is a machine and all machines fail. Do you drive a 1956 Cadillac in the snow? Well that's up to you, but for me, in order to keep it original, you gotta have replacement parts or not shoot it. All I am saying for me, I would keep a 1006 and shoot a tanfoglio witness elite in 10mm. I have guns that I don't shoot often because of that reason. I used to carry a gun everyday, but felt I can't because they don't make them anymore.

Guns in general. I am ferm believer in Murphy's Law. I understand your opinion, and I respect it. I don't want to take away anything you're doing. I used to be like you, but as I have gotten older, Mind you I am 34, I start seeing things differently. I have been shooting since I was 18 when I was in the Marine Corps. When I got out in 2007, I purchased my first non government issued firearm. I also knew very little in comparison of what I know now. I did jobs such as armed security. One particular night, I worked a site that didn't want armed security, so I had my weapon locked in the trunk. Guess what happened? A guy broke in and grabbed my weapon and I never saw my first handgun again. You can imagine losing something like that. Luckily they still make this model. Imagine if this were to happen today with my CZ-75 B SA in .40 S&W? CZ has discontinued that model not that long ago. I can replace parts, but not the gun itself. I am only expressing my opinion because there is some validity in my argument. It isn't because I am a buzz kill either.

Do true, but I hope to pass it to one of my kids. They know the value. Some are pretty much worthless, but some are very rare. Every firearm is a piece of history. If the kids overall don't appreciate them, than collectors or museum will. I hate when someone sells guns to a police buy back and some are rare and will be melted down.

The 1076 version which the FBI commissioned is a much better bullet-launcher...short 4.25" barrel, loses the bulky amby-safeties for a de-cocking lever and barely 1" width & adds Novak combat sights....alas, the female FBI Agents couldn't handle the 1076 = birth of the .40 Smith & Wesson
