Yes
The size of your mirror will influence the patterns generated. Also where you put the mirror will affect it too. Bigger mirror gives more mass equals lower resonating frequencies. The drum resonates in an airys pattern before installing the mirror. The mirror will superimpose its own pattern on top of that. So the shape of the mirror matters. Slightly off center gives a better pattern imho. Two mirrors on the same drum will create complimentary patterns.
Unmannedair i agree that middle of membrane is not the best place. I would try 1/3 or 1/4 ...
I was just going to suggest trying off center and multiple mirrors on one membrane.

Could you freeze a raw egg in liquid nitrogen then peal the shell off leaving the inside frozen?
If you could, attach the system with laser, mirror section and speaker on to a rotating mechanism to make a laser show.
I'd love to see an experiment with this setup with just a simple sine sweep from low to high to see how the pattern changes!
The fact that you didn't use protective glasses while using the blue laser proves not everyone should try this.

Rice can go bad, but under certain conditions. Watch that rice closely and keep it as far away from heat as possible.
Why not just put the mirrors on the speakers?
or just use speakers with the chrome hemispheres in the center?
have decided this is the perfect experiment to do with my 9year old to explain how sound works and why we can hear things thank you for the idea I'm sure he will love it. he doesnt get long wordy stuff but has always been great with visual

can't you just use the vortex cannon and load a substance into it?
If you add a second device, and project the beam from the first one on the mirror of the second one, you get a great laser show. Anyway, it’s much better to use front surface mirrors for lasers. They are more expensive, but the results are way better, and you get a clean laser dot.

what if you added some more mirrors on the ballon so that you could add more lasers moving perfectly in sinc yet with slightly different patterns due to the different position of the mirror on the vibrating surface?

Suggestion: Aim first mirror at a second much larger mirror on a can and have the speaker and second speaker on different stereo channels so they make different movements and you will have a much more interesting pattern...

If you used a shorter drum/tin would the patterns be larger and more erratic as it's closer to the speaker?

The only time I have ever used play at faster than normal speed on YT.
Edmund used to sell this idea with membrane stretched over classroom PA speaker box with just spotlights or slide projector, in the 60's. I picked up a Laser Disc with XY mirrors and it's He Ne laser years ago lots of fun at shows. For the most part this is better than all those sound threshold triggered LED lights out there now.

Xx_Bolbi_xX these lasers already go faaaarrrr. I own the first laser they used. It's a cheap one meant for astronomy. On a clear night, you can see the beam really well, and apparently it can go 20km up. There was an experiment done in Japan with a 1mw laser (pretty much a standard laser pointer) and he pointed it at a building 20km away. The people at the building could see his laser pointer with the naked eye.

I think a possible improvement on this might be to use a couple of speakers, and attach the mirrors to those via levers, one horizontal, and one vertical, use those as the left and right channels, and bounce the one laser off of both mirrors. That way you'd get a stereo projection.

Just a quick suggestion for easier small mirrors, go to the makeup section at any store and buy a couple cheap compacts.
Lasers burn out when used continually like that.
You should have made one for maybe mid tones and second for bass for example
Speaker, hot glue, mirror piece, and pen springs. Works a charm. Though, gluing directly to the speakers will have the expected result of having glue on your speakers. ;)

A friendly suggestion:
Quit looking at the monitor next to the camera. It looks like you aren’t looking at the viewer. Look into the camera lens. 80% of the time you were looking just off camera.
Other than that, AWESOME video! Loved the tutorial!
