  • Audio settings on the Canon XA40 prosumer camcorder for 3.5mm microphones (rather than XLR).
In order to configure a manual level for a 3.5mm microphone, you click on the 'Fn' shortcut key on the home screen on the LCD. There, you'll get a panel that can be adjusted with their the joystick or the touchscreen.
You can also configure settings for the 3.5mm input within the main settings menu (for me, it's on tab 3 of the sound settings page).

I appreciate the video, and currently I have 3.5mm mic. I want to configure audio live using the pots, so I purchased a 3.5 mm to xlr. My camera hasn’t arrived yet (2 more days). I’ll see how it works and let you know. My daughter is in a few bands so there are times I want to adjust on the fly, and going thru the menu is a pain. But I had no idea that was even possible before watching your video. It was really informative. Thanks!

Thanks! It's definitely a big step up from what I've been using to date. Hopefully will give a lot more options too.

What is the mic that you connected?

Hi! Thanks for this video. I have an XA40 and am having some audio trouble.
When I plug in an XLR cable (e.g. a lavalier mic) and a Rode Video Mic GO mic (3.5mm input), the camera seems to only allow me to use the XLR input and not the mic input (I only see one active audio channel).
If I want the Rode to pick up sound, I physically have to turn the XLR inputs from ON to OFF, and then I am able to see the Rode working in the audio channels.
Do you know how I can get my camera to pick up both an XLR input and a 3.5mm mic input at the same time?
I am also unsure of how to make sure the audio isn't mixed but rather, comes out in 2 separate channels in post production. Any ideas?

Hi, from India. I tried a lapel mic with xlr. Audio sounds better with xlr but it got stuck in the slot. If anyone knows how to take it out, message me please.

About this camera, I understand it doesn't have log profiles. Is there a way to tweak the existing picture profiles to get a flat cinema-like profile?

You're beyond my current level of sophistication I'm afraid but hopefully somebody more knowledgeable can advise (you may find the answer in the user manual I'm guessing)

I like your video. It explains it well; however, I find it difficult to follow you as you zip from one setting to another with out a pause to allow me to do the settings on my XA40.

Thanks for the feedback, Les! I'll try to take it more slowly next time. CZcams has proven to be a great learning process. Hope you're making good use of your XA40. I've come to love mine dearly!

@@DanielSRosehill .........It has been out of the box for only two days but I still haven't been able to grasp the external mic configuration.
It sure does take beautiful, crystal clear videos. Thank you for the immediate response. People really do appreciate that.

@@lesanderson8333 Good luck! The mic stuff takes a bit of getting used to. Check out the audio section of the user manual. There's a very detailed diagram. But basically: if the top handle is turned on, that's where you'll get audio from. If I recall correctly, input 2 is by default on its own channel so if you don't change a setting you'll end up with one sided audio. I THINK I did a video about that but it might be worth doing another demystifying one. It was the only part of the camcorder that took me a few days to figure out.

Sorry - I haven't tried taking still photos with the camcorder yet so don't know the answer.
